This review is NOT for unit #8. We did NOT stay in unit #8. When we arrived, we were bumped to unit #9 (because the guests in unit #8 decided to extend their stay). However, we weren't happy with unit #9. After our one night in unit #9, John (and Maximo, the property manager) arranged for us to move next door to unit #10, instead. Unit #10 was much more to our liking.
We found out later that our being shuffled around is not an unusual experience with John's units (I believe he owns 8 of the 12 units at Villas Princessa). So, be prepared.
John did a good job of rectifying what could have turned out to be a very frustrating experience. But, conversely, he could have proactively notified us of the bump-age.
Several little things added up to us not liking unit #9. The fridge doesn't get cold, the bathroom sink is crooked, the shelving unit attached to the bathroom mirror is broken/missing, the TV is small and old, the back of one of the two patio chairs is broken, the sofa slides around when you sit on it, and unit #9 is one unit closer to the loud music that the resort next-door plays at night. (The music tends to play from around 8pm until around 11pm.)
In unit #10, most of these issues were non-existent. : ) The sofa still slides, but the arrangement makes it less noticeable. And you can still hear the music at night, but it is a bit less loud. One different issue we had with unit #10 is that the bathroom ceiling leaks when the shower is run in the unit above. However, it drips into the shower pan, so not a big deal.
Maximo, the property manager, is awesome. He helped us arrange taxis to attend wedding-related events, which was invaluable. And Manito, the grounds-worker, is very friendly. Despite not speaking any English, he got us situated in our original unit when Maximo was not there when we arrived.
We always felt safe. No safety concerns here.
For beach access, the location is fantastic. There is a small non-resort-owned spot where you can rent a chair for the day for 100 pesos.
Solid market, pharmacy, and restaurant options are available nearby at the other end of the street. However, most of them cater to tourists, with few "local" options.
Bottom line -
We would happily stay in unit #10 again.
We would not stay in unit #9 again (unless lots of little issues are fixed).
We never stayed in unit #8, so we can't judge it.
I got the cheap room at John's place, it was very secure and and a great resting spot, bed, small kitchen, for the price it was great.
We really enjoyed our stay at this location. We can't wait to return. Everything worked well and we didn't encounter any problems. It is not a 4 star hotel but for anyone who has rented a lake cabin or beach house in the past and liked it, you will feel right at home.
The best part is being so close to the beach. From the door of your apartment to the heart of Bavaro Beach within two minutes of walking.
The property is gated and there is around the clock security.
very good location, security 24 hours good parking space, apt have good space. the owner is very helpfull .
