It was perfect. Shera took care on us and was always available. The appartment is pretty fine. Small shops are close to the appartment and to reach Manhatten the bus stop is arround the corner. So for next time we will do it again.
We booked Shiras ground floor apartment for 9 nights over easter when visiting New York (and New Jersey) for the first time. Arriving from JFK we found the transport suggestions useful and arrived ad the front door about 2 og 2½ hours after leaving JFK.
There was a mix-up about keys, Shira had by mistake sent us the acces code to one of the upstairs apartments but luckily she met us out front at we avoided having to call og wait. She was very friendly and welcoming despite a slightly confused start.
The apartment is fairly exactly described in the photos, but we were a little surprised that there is so little natural light. The apartment is on the street level with no steps up and tiled floors. The place was newly decorated and very clean and everything was fine..
The place was quite cold which we immediately pointed out to Shira, who turned on the (very noisy but efficient) air condition. Also, the wifi didn't seem to work, but our host straight away had her husband reset the whole thing and the problem was solved. She also provided good shopping advice.
The apartment worked well for us, we found it comfortable and easy to use. Plenty of hot water, good appliances and OK beds. The beds could have been more comfortable, the master bed was quite hard and lacked a top mattress. Neither bed had linen on the warm covers, only sheets, and we would have preferred not to share bedding 2 and 2, and had individual covers instead. No big deal, though.
We did have one pretty serious issue during our stay: the toilet was a little 'slow' the whole time, and on the 3rd day it blocked completely. Shira and her husband Billy responded immediately and Billy worked hard on it till late, but unfortunately Billy couldn't fix it the same evening and we had no toilet overnight. The next day after one more attempt form Billy, a professional guy came in and got it sorted. This whole thing was annoying and we felt bad that our hosts implied that we had something to do with the breakdown, which was certainly not the case. However, Shira and Billy were most helpful and committed to solving the problem quickly so we were just happy when it was over. Their friendly approach made up for the insinuation.
The neighborhood: we didn't spend time in Union City, the point of our trip being New York. The shuttle bus is easy, but may take much longer than 10 minutes if the traffic is heavy. We only came home at night. Had we been in NYC we would have gone home for a break during the day. But the neighborhood felt safe and it was quiet.
Overall a nice place, very accomodating and helpfull hosts and only a few issues, one of them serious, that made the stay not quite perfect but just good.
Shira was really professional , always responded immediately apartment as described . they are pro and there is a lock box at door and informational paper on table , so you wont get confused . neighborhood is mid-level ( or lower ) working class. maybe not very safe for walking alone late night
I would definitely recommend this place. Shira's apartment was perfect for our stay in NY. It is exactly as it is shown in the pictures (big and cosy) and we found it very clean and tidy when we arrived.
It is very well connected to Times Square, you just have to walk 2 minutes to the corner to take the little buses that run constantly to the center, anytime of the day. They cost $3 and they are really fast. To go back to the apartment, the stop is in the corner between 8th Av and 41st.
The area of the apartment is also very good. There are some restaurants close by, little shops and a supermarket. We went to "Mi Bandera" restaurant and we would recommend it, we had really nice food.
Unfortunately, we didn't have the chance meet Shira personally but she was very kind and efficient answering our emails.
We would be back to this place if we are back to NY.
Shira was incredibly helpful. As a fellow Airbnb user I needed housing for a business client in an emergency. Shira was available and very friendly and personally extended late hours of the evening. Our business client who actually stayed in the apartment was very happy and relaxed staying there.
The apartment was as advertised and could comfortably fit two couples although it was my friend and myself on this holiday. It was clean and comfortable with all mod cons. The one thing I would say it that it was quite dark in the living room/kitchen and the first bedroom as there is very little daylight due to high walls on the window side of the property opposite.
Buses to Manhattan were quick and inexpensive but be aware that if your are returning home late from the city taxis will charge you at least $50 because you're going to New Jersey even though it costs $3 on the bus from the same place!
One thing that was not mentioned on the property description or in any email once we made the booking is that the apartment above this one is also an Airb&b rental. Every step could be heard, it felt like the floor was paper thin, this was only irritating in the early morning and at night when you were in bed and woke my friend up several times - bring ear plugs!
Other than that I would definitely stay here again, the host came to welcome us on the second night which was much appreciated.
Thank you for you comments,
I can assure you that we are very concern with shoes walking in all of our apts. I wish you told me that the first night it happened. I could have talked to them and fix this for you.
Normally this is in our house rule and our welcome email, but now, we also hanged a sign that asked everyone to take their shoes off while they walking around.
