About this listing
Imagine 5500 sqm (1.35 acres) of lush tropical gardens framed by bamboo and palm trees, flowering ginger plants, orchideas and heliconias. Fruit trees (from papaya to mango, lime and orange, and a small banana plantation), dramatic big rocks scattered in the natural landscape. A highlight and a very unique offer is the maintained jungle path that goes down to the Rio Morete where you may swim, sunbathe or just relax in absolute privacy. The sounds of the rainforest, the river and at night the waves from the beaches closeby. And here is YOUR vacation rental: The Garden Cottage (previously Chocolate House, newly renovated and renamed in June 2013).
Uvita, with its infrastructure that includes banks, supermarkets, health care and restaurants is only 1 mile away by car. Add another mile and you are at one of the finest beaches in the area, the famous Whale's Tail. Plenty of sports and excursion activities can be booked in Uvita. In addition, you will reach the bustling top surf spot Dominical with a 15 min drive.
So you are able to have it all: the tranquility of nature, your private spot on the river to cool off and the sounds of the rainforest, as well as an active, but still laid back small town experience and beach life and sports galore. Choose what suits you best each day!
The Garden Cottage is designed to accommodate 2 persons comfortably. On 50 sqm (538 sq ft, incl. deck) you will find everything necessary for a joyous Costa Rican vacation: the open inside features a queen size bed on one side and the kitchen and lounge area on the other. Closet, toilet and shower are separated.
Sliding doors lead to the deck, which is equipped with lounge chairs and a hammock. From here you have a splendid garden and rainforest view and may watch toucans and red and green parrots, the most colourful butterflies and humming birds and even the occasional monkey and other furry friends, who would like to welcome you.
The Garden Cottage also features: wireless internet, air condition, ceiling fan, kitchen with small appliances (stovetop, coffee maker, blender, small fridge), safe deposit box, parking. Included is the supply of linens, bath towels, toilet paper, hand soap and cleaning tools. Please help us in our own efforts to conserve natural resources, minimizing waste of water, electricity (esp. air condition) and chemicals. Also the house is non smoking, but of course you may smoke outside.
Peace and tranquility and being in touch with nature are key elements in our neighborhood. Noise, pollution, negative energy, overcrowded spaces are being left outside when you enter the property. There are only a few neighbors and we all share and enforce the same philosophy.
A rental car is absolutely recommended for your stay at the Garden Cottage (a safe parking space is located next to the house). We will be happy to provide you with driving directions before your arrival.
1) How far is it from the international airport in San José?
It is a 124 miles / 3,5 hours drive from the international airport in San José to Uvita. We recommend to rent a car and to do the drive during daytime (please consider this when making your reservation, as you might have to spend one night in San Jose). The best route from the airport is to take the new highway 27 direction Caldera and then highway 34 via Jaco, Quepos, Dominical to Uvita.
2) How close is The Garden Cottage to the beaches?
The nearest beach with calm water and therefore good for swimming is Playa Bahia Uvita at the famous Whale's Tail, in a driving distance of 2,5 miles, the nearest surfer beach with big waves is Playa Hermosa, also 2,5 miles. All together you will be close to seven different and stunning beaches here in the Uvita area. All within easy reach with your rental car.
Other Things to Note

Mona is lovely and made sure she was home to greet us and show us around upon our arrival. The listing is accurate - the house is actually one large room, with a full bathroom and a fantastic, large covered porch spanning the entire width of the house. Mona's house is on the property, so she's less than one minute away should you find yourself needing anything (which I suspect you won't - we didn't!). The house is extremely clean, tidy, and impeccably maintained, outfitted with everything you could need for a very comfortable stay: A/C, Wi-fi, a terrific gas stovetop for cooking, a (small) fridge, dishes / utensils / cookware, bathroom towels, etc. The queen-sized bed is extremely comfortable, and there are beautiful reading lights over each side, which we found very convenient and a lovely touch. The grounds are gorgeous and meticulously-groomed, with all types of flowers blooming everywhere. It really is a tropical garden! Even though the bathroom door is literally right next to the bed, it was pretty sound-proof - the entire house is well-constructed and was obviously thoughtfully planned.
Mona was welcoming, kind and very helpful. Her cottage was by far the best place we have stayed in Costa Rica. We are only sorry that we did not stay longer. The cottage is clean, peaceful and gives a feeling of being in nature with lots of windows, light and views of the jungle. We would recommend Mona's cottage to anyone. Thanks again Mona!
Mona was absolutely amazing. So sweet, helped us with details on our next hotel and also dinner reservations. (Mona - I had seared tuna caught that day and it was the best fish I've ever had!)
The cottage is perfect and the river was so refreshing. Very serene, relaxing environment. We heard the howler monkeys and saw tucans on the short walk to the river. We will definitely be back.
We spent two nights at Monas house and we had a wonderfull time there. It’s an excellent location, spacious, clean, but most important managed with love and passion. Mona is a really helpful and thoughtful host (as we arrived we had some fruits already waiting for us). We felt very comfortable and protected by the two dogs of her as well.
The house is fully equipped and you have the possibility to cook for yourself. We used it and had a great breakfast each day with coffee and scrambled eggs at the terrace while looking for hummingsbirds, Blue Morpho and listening to all the other birds.
Just 10 min by car you’ll find the waterfall and the Supermercado BM and the touristoffice is just nearer. The parque National Marina Ballena is just 15 minutes away. A car is at least very helpful.
If you are looking for a piecefull and ‚close to nature‘ accomodation I can really recommend this place.
Hopefully Mona liked us as much as we liked her so that we’ll have the possibility to come back – because we will if we are around in the future.
(For a nice and delicious restaurant I can really recommend the Goathouse 169 from Anja (website hidden). You’ll get fresh juices and meals which are prepared with a lot of love.)
We had such a wonderful stay in this comfortable and lovely cottage! Mona is a great host, very helpful and attentive. The cottage is super clean and offers everything you need. We were happy to find fresh fruits waiting for us, but also happy that many basic utilities (like oil, salt, soap, etc.) were already there. Mona's garden cottage is a superb place for people who are looking for privacy and tranquillity. Still, you are only minutes away from the small town of Uvita, where you will find a supermarket, ATM, gas station and restaurants. We enjoyed the beautiful nature around Uvita and it was also a good base for a day trip by boat to Corcovado and day tour diving at Cano Island. Both tour operators were only a few minutes away. After a long and impressive day it was so nice to get back in Mona's cottage, to sit down at the porch, enjoy the silence and the view and to have a complete kitchen to make your own meals if wanted. When we were there the weather was dry and hot. Although we did not use the airco, it is there if you want. We preferred the fan, so we could leave the windows open and listen to the sounds of nature at night. And if you should get too hot, you can walk through the garden to a river, where you will find a very private place to cool off! To all people who are looking for a peaceful and comfortable stay in Uvita with a lovely host, we thoroughly recommend Mona's cottage. By the way, if you like dogs, Mike and Pinto will be happy to welcome you, but will not bother you at all.
What an incredible spot. Represented very well by posted pictures. Such beautiful gardens, so lovingly tended by Mona. A path off the garden takes you to the river, a perfect way to cool the body and watch brightly colored birds at the same time. The porch of the cottage was a perfect place for long views of the jungle, for watching the monkey and birdlife happening in the canopy. She was a fantastic host, offering beach recommendations and complete peace and quiet. I really enjoyed meeting Mona and felt so comfortable traveling solo with her as my host. I can only hope this place doesn't become constantly booked. I plan on returning! Thank you Mona, Mike and Pinto. I am so glad I met you!
About the Host, Mona & Mike
I am a European lady who has chosen Costa Rica as her home a couple of years ago. My own house is on the same premises as The Garden Cottage, on the other side of a little creek. If you enjoy peaceful natural surroundings, tropical plants, the sounds of the jungle, the river and the beaches closeby, you will love The Garden Cottage!
