My family and I spent all of July and August in Salpy's wonderful home. The house itself was perfect for us and our two children, and the creek in the back was amazing on hot days. We enjoyed using the tubes and kayaks, and the trails were also great for my 7-year-old for catching frogs and salamanders. Thanks to Salpy's helpful handouts about the house and the surrounding area, we felt very much at home all summer. We couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you, Salpy, for a perfect summer!
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Salpy's cabin. Salpy was great to work with. She was quick to respond to any questions we have and even sent us the best route to her house from our home. She left us lots of recommendations of things to do and places to eat. She left us plenty of wood by the fireplace and the house had a thermostat to adjust the heat to whatever we wanted, but we kept it low so we could enjoy the fire. The house also had plenty of bottled water for us to drink. She even provided fresh towels nicely folded for us in the bathroom. Salpy is a very considerate host. In addition, there were lots of supplys for us to cook if we wanted to, but we enjoyed checking out local bars and restaurants for our meals then coming back to Salpys to build a nice fire and play games. Before visiting the cabin, we had already decided on a place to hike, but if we weren't sure where to go, Salpy had a hiking book marked up with hikes that they enjoyed. All in all in was a wonderful trip. My husband and plan to try and return to Salpy's cabin in the summer to see what Sullivan County has to offer during that time of year. Therefore, we highly recommend staying at Salpy's home.
The house was lovely and well-equipped, and the host is excellent. Salpy was prompt and informative, and even sent us an unprompted message about the fall foliage and recommendations on scenic routes. Upon our arrival to the house, we found helpful instructions and suggestions, along with clean and comfortable amenities. We were able to build fires and gaze at stars right behind the house. Thank you, Salpy! We had a wonderful weekend thanks to you.
The reservation was canceled 3 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
The log cabin was a wonderful base for our family's month long July holiday in Sullivan County. Even though the weather was extremely hot and humid for 2 weeks (drought conditions really), with the screened skylights open and tents set up in the backyard, we slept comfortably. The Callicoon Creek, with residential beavers, behind the cabin provided access to Lake Jefferson with some fancy navigating due to very low water levels earlier on in the month. The rains eventually arrived later in the month and so the the Creek could be happily explored in both directions via the 2 provided kayaks. We swam in Jeff Lake once- it's okay but since it's silting in it's probably better for non-powered boating and fishing than a refreshing dip.
Salpy left wonderful tips on local restaurants, Catskill Guides and maps with highlighted hikes and nearby swimming lakes to explore. Crystal Lake was pretty close, and had great blueberries and swimming. We loved isolated Mud Pond and a big group of us travelled to Little and Big Ponds for swimming and used Salpy's raft for paddling around.
The cabin is cosy and well-equipped with everything you need for cooking and river/lake fun. The backyard and firepit are fantastic- we set up 3 tents, badminton and croquet.
The cabin is close to Rte. 52, so there is regular traffic noise. But you get used to it as background white noise eventually. There's a seasonal Farmer's Market on Thursday afternoons in nearby Jeffersonville and the village is just the right size to explore on foot for a morning or afternoon walk. We enjoyed eating in Jeffersonville at Samba's (lunch/dinner) and the Brooklyn deli (breakfast), and further south at Fat Lady. Our daughter's Root N Roost farm is 7 miles away in White Sulphur Springs and has a farm stand open Friday-Sunday on Mineral Springs Road. There are weekend workshops and farm tours as well- the kids love the pigs, ducks and chickens.
We brought 2 electric bikes and 2 normal bikes with us- and the basement of the log cabin made safe and dry storage for the bikes very convenient. The area is hilly- so I really enjoyed riding the electric bikes - there are so many beautiful country roads with very little traffic; my favorite were early morning cycles to beat the daytime heat.
Salpy was great to communicate with- she responded immediately to my voicemail messages and emails. There is cellphone reception at the cabin.
This is a great value Airbnb, and I'd recommend spending a month or long weekend there exploring the beauty of rural Sullivan County and the Catskills.
While of course no one can be blamed for poor weather, which we had for our day and a half here, this place did not live up to the pictures. It is about 30 feet from the major road that runs though this region. I did not realize Rt 52 was such a busy road and that the house was so close to the road. This means you hear cars -- or mostly trucks actually -- constantly. It is not exactly a quiet getaway.
There was no heat available, because the owner turned it off for the summer, despite the cool nights. We had to build a fire with very damp firewood, which did not take off and was a lot of work to try to build. Also there is well water here so you can't filter and have to bring your own. (And why would you want to bathe in water that is too toxic to filter?)
Also unfortunately, because the weather was stormy, we could not take advantage of the kayaks, which was the main reason I booked this place, as well as the trail that runs from the house in back, which is cool. So if you want to kayak, then go for it. If not, book elsewhere.
We had a really terrific weekend at Salpy's cottage. She was so helpful in planning our stay, and left us everything we needed to enjoy our time there - instructions, local guides and kayaks!
