About this listing
ARTISTS, POETS, WRITERS, MUSICIANS AND GEMOLOGISTS.....THIS HOUSE IS FOR YOU!
Built during the 1860's, our house has been lovingly restored with natural local materials such as canterra stone, brick and concrete floors, historic white-wash recipes and some original exposed plaster walls. Covering 2,000 square feet with 14 foot saguaro ribbed ceilings and 2 foot thick adobe walls, this adobe defines 19th century Tucson architecture at its finest.
The dining room is set off the kitchen and is a great place to enjoy your meals, entertain and hang out. There is a spinet piano in this room too.
The cozy "art room" has paintings and photographs from all over the world and stylistically covers [or uncovers] everything from nudes, portraiture, contemporary to classical. An eclectic mix of old and new. There is also a TV in this room.
The spacious piano room houses a 1920 Emerson baby grand piano and a big desk/table that can be used for reading, creating artwork or computering around.
WiFi covers the house.
The two bedrooms have queen beds and one is surrounded with 12 foot bookcases with hundreds of volumes ranging from fiction, non-fiction, art, travel, language...well, you name it.
Arrangements can be made if there are more than 4 guests. There is a daybed for one extra guest. Extra guests are $35 per guest, per night.
There is only one bathroom in the house but is large...and unique. The beach pebble floor shower is a real standout. Outside the bathroom there is an outdoor shower plus a plumbed, claw-foot bathtub out by the chicken coop. [theoretically three people could be bathing at the same time]
BTW, the chickens are part of the deal! [We currently have 7 hens and they lay beautiful blue, brown and white eggs] There are fewer finer things in life than going out to the coop and cooking up some fresh eggs in the morning.
We have canaries, goldfish in the fountain and a sulcata tortoise named Flora who roams the yard.
The kitchen has french doors that go out to a raised garden which, depending on the time of year and our input, is flowery, vegetably or fallow. The kitchen is equipped with a fine group of cast iron pans, a commercial stove and the usual gadgetry. There is also a basic fire pit in the yard, a perfect spot to hang out at night under the chinaberry trees and stars with a glass of wine.
The house was built to the street and appears unassuming; this maximizes the courtyard and yard in back. Back doors open to the private yard, garden, patio, fire pit, outdoor shower and chicken coop. It's hard to believe this is inner city.
It's a great natural escape yet close enough to walk downtown, the Convention Center, the Temple of Music and Art and numerous restaurants...El Minuto (Mexican), 5 Points, Casa Vincente (Spanish), Cushing Street Bar & Grill and Desta (Ethiopian) are all easy walks from the house.
Gem Show guests, this house is 2 blocks from the Convention Center and an easy walk to the I-10 showrooms!
There is off street parking for one vehicle, two if compact.
Dogs with interview.
This house was has been featured in the World of Interiors, Tucson Lifestyle, HGTV's Renovation Generation and has been in the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundations' walking tour.
***PLEASE NOTE THAT PRICING VARIES ACCORDING TO SEASON...$200 IS THE LOWEST SUMMER RATE. PLEASE SEE CALENDAR FOR DAILY SEASONAL RATES.
Interaction with Guests
At check in we give the guests a tour of the place along with a crash course in chicken care...so easy!
Our neighborhood is one of the oldest barrios in the U.S. Its authentic and beautiful adobe architecture places it on the National Historic Register. It is a place that can feel rural and yet we are just a few blocks from downtown.
There is bus transit one block away and Uber is always hovering nearby.
From Jan 15 - Mar 1, 2016 the minimum stay is 4 nights.
We've just returned from a long trip in the Southwest, and our stay in Gary's Tucson home was a big highlight! He was warm and informative when he met us and provided us with everything we needed to know about his magical place. It was exactly as pictured in the listing, and we couldn't ask for a more interesting, relaxing home in the middle of our vacation. We highly recommend this beautifully eclectic house.
Gary was out of town when we arrived, but he made sure his nephew was there to give us the low-down on the house, which is, just as spectacular as everyone describes! You really feel like you're walking into historical site when you enter the house. The design and artwork is amazing, the kitchen is fantastic, and the neighborhood is awesome (just take a walk through it & you'll find Tuscon gems like historic barrios). Some highlights include:
- Walking distance to downtown and great restaurants
- Unique features like outdoor shower and tub
- Chicken coop with fresh eggs
- An awesome tortoise that lives in the yard!
- A fantastic collection of books strewn around the house
- Comfortable bedding for 2-4 people
- Gourmet kitchen
- Towels provided
Thank you Gary for letting us stay in your beautiful home! It was an awesome experience.
Gary's place was AWESOME. Tho not for everyone this house was just what the doctor ordered. The house was filled with eccentric detail, loving animals and good vibes. My family really enjoyed our stay & would visit again. Gary was easy to get in contact with and made us feel welcome.
Gary was a wonderful and gracious host! He was available whenever I needed him and thankfully allowed me to leave my bags longer than expected on the last day. The house was just as it seems from the pictures - eclectic, fun, and quite big. We really enjoyed how close the house was to downtown and other great spots (5 Points Market was amazing). We had a wonderful stay and would recommend this home to anyone visiting Tucson!
Gary was an exceedingly wonderful host. I have been to Tucson several times, and this was the first time I felt like I got a feel for what special things Tucson has to offer -- and that is totally a credit to Gary. The home itself is basically a work of art, and each room is special in its own way. The theme of the house is thoughtfulness - both in terms of how each element of the house has been curated, but also in terms of how human beings can exist in harmony with our natural surroundings. The fresh eggs from the chickens, and the pleasant presence of Flora the tortoise were welcome additions to an already remarkable home. In addition to the house itself, we walked around discovering the neighborhood and all the restaurants Gary recommended were exceptional. If you have ever contemplated visiting Tucson, I highly recommend doing it with Gary as your host.
Gary is a true artist in every sense of the word. This house is so beautifully crafted that we wanted to stay forever. I took sooo many photos before leaving. Especially enjoyed the bathroom and shower. So many things here to delight the senses. Besides all this, expert advise on Tucson. Wonderful to be able to walk to the Spanish restaurant. Thanks so much for all of this! Hope to have another chance to stay and visit Flora and all the rest. Ellie
From the moment we walked in we knew that we'd chosen well. We wanted an authentic Tucson experience & got it in abundance! Every corner of the house tells a story... brimming with local artifacts, antiques, exposed walls & ceilings, beautiful & unusual furniture... along with every practical amenity needed... made it feel like home! Gary & Darren were delightful hosts, super friendly & very helpful. Imagine a welcome with open arms & then put a cherry on top!
The 'Adobe' was in a peaceful street, yet only minutes from the hubbub of Downtown Tucson, giving us chance to relax in the outdoor tub whilst watching the Arizona sunset & chilling with a pre-dinner Tequila before heading out to experience the wonderful street vibe that beckoned. Freshly laid eggs from the chickens, canaries singing their sweet song & Flora the tortoise only added to our 'home from home' experience.
Hope to return to this gem... can't recommend it enough! Di & Lou, xx
