The Space

Built during the 1860's, our house has been lovingly restored with natural local materials such as canterra stone, brick and concrete floors, historic white-wash recipes and some original exposed plaster walls. Covering 2,000 square feet with 14 foot saguaro ribbed ceilings and 2 foot thick adobe walls, this adobe defines 19th century Tucson architecture at its finest.

The dining room is set off the kitchen and is a great place to enjoy your meals, entertain and hang out. There is a spinet piano in this room too.

The cozy "art room" has paintings and photographs from all over the world and stylistically covers [or uncovers] everything from nudes, portraiture, contemporary to classical. An eclectic mix of old and new. There is also a TV in this room.

The spacious piano room houses a 1920 Emerson baby grand piano and a big desk/table that can be used for reading, creating artwork or computering around. WiFi covers the house.

The two bedrooms have queen beds and one is surrounded with 12 foot bookcases with hundreds of volumes ranging from fiction, non-fiction, art, travel, language...well, you name it.

Arrangements can be made if there are more than 4 guests. There is a daybed for one extra guest. Extra guests are $25 per guest, per night.

There is only one bathroom in the house but is large...and unique. The beach pebble floor shower is a real standout. Outside the bathroom there is an outdoor shower plus a plumbed, claw-foot bathtub out by the chicken coop. [theoretically three people could be bathing at the same time]

BTW, the chickens are part of the deal! [We currently have 8 hens and they lay beautiful blue, brown and white eggs] There are fewer finer things in life than going out to the coop and cooking up some fresh eggs in the morning.

We have canaries, goldfish in the fountain and a sulcata tortoise named Flora who roams the yard.

The kitchen is shaded by a fig tree with french doors that go out to a raised garden which, depending on the time of year and our input, is flowery, vegetably or fallow. The kitchen is equipped with a fine group of cast iron pans, a vintage Merritt-O'Kefffe stove and the usual gadgetry. There is also a basic fire pit in the yard, a perfect spot to hang out at night under the chinaberry trees and stars with a glass of wine.

The house was built to the street and appears unassuming; this maximizes the courtyard and yard in back. Back doors open to the private yard, garden, patio, fire pit, outdoor shower and chicken coop. It's hard to believe this is inner city.

It's a great natural escape yet close enough to walk downtown, the Convention Center, the Temple of Music and Art and numerous restaurants...El Minuto (Mexican), Casa Vincente (Spanish), Cushing Street Bar & Grill and Desta (Ethiopian) are all easy walks from the house.

Gem Show guests, this house is 2 blocks from the Convention Center and an easy walk to the I-10 showrooms!

There is off street parking for one vehicle, two if compact.
Dogs with interview.

This house was has been featured in the World of Interiors, Tucson Lifestyle, HGTV's Renovation Generation and has been in the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundations' walking tour.

  • Once again our stay in The Adobe was like heaven. We felt completely at home. The entire place is a work of art realized. Every where is a comfy and rich place to sit and enjoy. We both loved the kitchen and Gary even left us flowers.
The back yard is a wonderland. From the fire pit, which we also cooked over- to the whimsical outdoor bath tub- who can top having a bubble bath under the stars- to finding our own fresh eggs each morning- we never stopped smiling.
This is a private and stunning getaway. A dream place for lovers. We are so, so grateful to have stepped into our home away from home. The Enchanted Adobe has become our escape from the way the world can shout.
    I long to return....

  • I can't imagine a better place to relax and unwind. We made breakfast each morning from the fresh chicken's eggs and later took turns lounging in the outdoor bath. Gary's book collection is inspired and another treat of the trip was dipping into some of the classics while lounging. The location is ideal and it's an easy walk to most anyplace you'd want to go... and short drive to some incredible hiking options. Gary was a wonderful host and helped us out at every turn. Very highly recommended.

  • It is hard to know where to start to describe what a remarkable find this rental was! The home is situated in the best and most beautiful part of Tucson and the house is itself a work of art - remarkably comfortable with two gorgeous bedrooms, a large modern kitchen, a dining room, a video sitting room, a parlor with a grand piano and a yard that itself is worth the visit - chickens and that means fresh eggs every morning and a resident tortoise who likes being hand-fed carrots. I had one of the very best vacations and this house was a dream come true.

  • WOW! SUch a cool space, close to everything in central Tucson, and with a charm that made our stay so very memorable! Gary was such a thoughtful and accommodating host, and his home was a comfortable and inviting space to retire to after long days under the Tucson sun. He helped us with some restaurant choices that ended up being our favorites during our stay. The pictures of his home pretty much tell the whole story, while Gary's thoughtfulness and professionalism were the icing on the cake! Thanks so much!!!

  • Gary's home is a gem! Beautifully decorated, spacious, and very comfortable. We loved spending afternoons and evenings in the back yard, listening to the fountain and watching geckos scurry over the rocks. Can't recommend this enough!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Gary's beautiful home. Between the art collection, books, gorgeous living space and amazing backyard we barely wanted to leave the house to go do anything. Gary is a wonderful host and easily accessible for any questions or needs you might have. I highly recommend this fantastic historic home!

  • This was one of the most enchanting places I have ever stayed. It was such a wonderful experience, from meeting Gary, our host, to cooking in the beautiful kitchen with perfectly seasoned cast iron pans. We spent quiet moments in each room just enjoying the art covered walls of this historic Adobe. The structure has been so lovingly restored that we marveled at every inch. There was always something new to discover. Dining Al Fresco for our meals made us feel relaxed and renewed everyday. We especially enjoyed relaxing next to an open fire, under the stars.
The highlight of our stay, fresh eggs from our very own chickens and a glorious Rooster. This place is totally unique and totally beautiful. I long to return. I long to return to this sanctuary of privacy and serenity.
Thank you Gary for our perfect get-a-way. It was a privilege to experience this extraordinary home.

  • My family and I stayed at Gary's place for a long weekend to celebrate my graduation. It was the first time that they had been to Tucson and Gary's place was such a perfect way to introduce them to the southwest and all of it's unique charm. We enjoyed spending time together in the back yard, gathering around a fire pit at night, and sharing several home cooked meals. The house is even more beautiful and energetic than the pictures show. Thanks for everything, Gary!
