For the dates from October 1st through October 16th, there is a minimum stay of six nights.
The door to the Kahuna Room opens to the pastel-themed hallway where every door has a different pastel shade.
The Kahuna Room is a very reasonably priced accommodation, easily accessible on the first floor, that is part of a healing sanctuary called Banyan Tree, located on the lower slope of the Hualalai Volcano at 1100' elevation. There is a queen sized bed and a twin bed made up like a couch, but easily converted into a second bed for two people traveling together who each need their own bed, and a coffee table in the room. There is a sliding glass door entrance off the driveway as well as a door off the hallway. You will share a full sized bathroom with two other rooms, and have shared use of the community kitchen as well as the spa facilities.
Our fee is $87 per night for maximum of 2 guests, plus 13.42% Hawaii accommodation tax (due upon arrival).
We are a vegetarian community, and we ask that while you stay here, you refrain from cooking or eating any beef, lamb, chicken, fish, turkey or pork products, including any type of bacon. We are also a NO SMOKING facility, so we ask that you please do not smoke in any part of Banyan Tree or on the grounds.
There is a lap pool that is salt-charged, (no chlorine) an ozonated hot tub (no chlorine) and an infra-red sauna that you can use, and property-wide wifi. There is also a 30' diameter dodecahedron we call the Mother Ship that has a 70" big screen TV and a great DVD collection, (and subscriptions to Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime) and you can use it for yoga, meditation, or just hanging out.
We encourage you to look at the photos and inquire about any questions that you may have. Guests staying with us for two weeks get one free night's stay.
The closest beaches are a 15 minute drive from our door, and are in the yacht harbor area. One is a very nice snorkel beach, especially in the morning, the other is a turtle sanctuary with a broad expanse of white sand. One of the top ten beaches on the Big Island is only a 25 minute drive from our door, and that is Kua Bay, about 4.5 miles north of the airport. We have a limited supply of snorkels, masks, and boogie boards that you are free to use on a first come, first serve basis. We ask that you rinse off the equipment with fresh water when you return from the beach, and if there are several guests staying here at the same time, to give everyone a chance to use the equipment.
We provide various healing modalities; many styles of massage therapy, yoga, meditation, dietary guidelines, etc. and we can set up your dolphin tour experience/manta ray night dive as well. We are long-time residents of the Big Island and know many special places that we can direct you to. We are only a 20 minute drive to the airport. We strongly encourage renting a car, as we are quite remote from any stores or beaches, and you would need to drive to get to those locations. Taxi fees are prohibitive; if you are unable to rent a car, it's probably best that you choose another location.
Because we are a healing sanctuary and retreat space, and many people come to us for the peace, quiet, healing and tranquility that we are able to offer our guests, we have chosen to limit the ages of children that visit us to 12 years or older. We are simply not set up to accommodate families with younger children, and we apologize for that.
Come to Banyan Tree Sanctuary to experience a different level of peacefulness on your next Hawaiian vacation!
Everything on the property is available, most at no extra cost.
The only things that are extra are the massages, prepared smoothies and other food items, and the organic vegetables from the garden.
There is no washer/dryer service on property grounds.
Interaction with Guests
As little or as much as our guests like.
This is an exceptionally beautiful part of the Kona side of the island, it is actually called Kona Heavens! We are in a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood and we are the very last house on a dead end road, so we truly are a sanctuary. There are wonderful places to stroll right out of your door, and it is a very safe neighborhood.
There is no public transportation, so please plan on renting a car.
We are a small group of people sharing a very special and unique property on the Big Island of Hawaii. Since some of the areas are shared; i.e. the main kitchen, the dining area and some living areas, we ask that you respect any and all common areas and pick up after yourself. This includes, but is not restricted to: wet towels, shoes, backpack, laptops and other electronic devices, clothes, etc. Certain areas are available on a simple reservation basis, such as the Mother Ship, by putting your name and time of requested use on a little whiteboard by the door.
We are primarily a vegetarian community, and we ask that while you stay here, you refrain from cooking any beef, lamb, chicken, fish, turkey or pork products, including any type of bacon. We are also a NO SMOKING facility, so we ask that you please do not smoke in any part of Banyan Tree or on the grounds.
We have quiet time from 9pm to 8am, which means you are welcome to use the jacuzzi, pool, or common spaces after 9pm, as long as you are respectful and quiet in your movements. Although there is no requirement to do so, if you feel moved to spend some time in the gardens watering or weeding, we always welcome that kind of energy.
Soooo amazing! We're just a couple of old white folks and what were we doing at a vegetarian sanctuary!! HAving a BLAST! Wonderful gracious hosts offering amenities of every kind. Massage? Labyrinth ? Fresh home grown veggies? Sunsets in the hot tub?
Walks with the morning sounds! Really lovely. Wonderful room and wonderful people. Thanks all
I was welcomed in an excellent way, Rae did everything he could to make me feel great about my arrival, instructions were posted as my arrival time was not when he could personally show me around but they were extremely thorough.
We relaxed the moment we stepped on the property! In fact, we could hardly go to our room the first night; we just wanted to soak in the energy & the beauty. All the descriptions about Banyan Tree were accurate: peaceful, beautiful, invigorating, community-focused & well managed. Every aspect of our room, the grounds & the ease with which we navigated our stay exceeded our needs.
The only slight annoyance involved construction noise, but we knew this was very situational.
We are already planning to stay with Banyan Tree again!
Overall a beautiful experience - a little piece of paradise in paradise. The property grows a wide variety of fruits which are freely available - fresh papaya for breakfast was a real treat. A good indication of our stay is when it came time for us to leave, we didn't want to. The fact you can prepare your own food in the communal kitchen is a real plus, as is the pool, the jacuzzi and sauna. Rae is a very generous host and we hope to come back sometime soon.
Welcoming, relaxing place, brought to life by lovely people. Surpassed my expectations. Highly recommended.
The Banyan Tree Sanctuary is a very lovely place. We enjoyed our stay there very much. Rae is very friendly and always helpful. The kitchen is very useable and well equipped. The fruit of the Sanctuary itself is extremely tasty. We'd definately come back.
Mahalo for your feedback and for your very kind review. To be precise, Max, our description and directions very clearly says to turn on Manu Mele to Hamiha and turn left on Kohanaiki. If you went on the other part that is very rough, you followed GPS or misread the directions.
From the directions:
To come here directly from the airport, go 3 miles south, towards Kona, and make a left on Hina Lani Road. Go 3+ miles up the hill, and make a left on Manu Mele Road. Go in 3 blocks and make a right on Hamiha Road. Go one block to the top of the hill, and make a left on Kohanaiki Road. Stay on this road to the VERY END, almost one mile, we are the last house on the road. Do not use GPS, it may not work.
As for the HI vacation tax, I apologize profusely. I could have sworn it was stated in the description, but when I went to look for it, it was not there. I checked all our other listings and every one of them had the tax listed as extra, but not the kahuna room. That has been remedied, and I thank you very much for pointing it out.
Looking for a piece of paradise near Kona, home of Rae's perfect. A human paradise, a frut paradise, a paradise room ... thank you for all Rae

I am the business manager of a beautiful piece of property in Kailua Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii, called Banyan Tree Sanctuary. I have traveled extensively in the US, and have spent time in every single state except for Alaska. I have also been to Canada, New Zealand and Fiji.
I am a compassionate vegan, and have been a massage therapist for over 30 years. I am a very strong advocate for compassion to all living things, and so choose not to inflict any suffering regarding my diet and lifestyle. Living on this property allows me to eat fresh ripe raw organic fruits and vegetables every single day, and I am incredibly grateful for that. To be able to go out in the morning and find ripe papayas, lilikoi, mango, and so much more, is a true gift. I am also a musician (percussion) and singer/songwriter. We have some drums and guitars at Banyan Tree Sanctuary, and our guests are always welcome to play these and join with any of our classes and events.
My motto is simple: love everyone, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Life is way too short to spend any time doing anything else!
This property is very special, and even with professional pictures, you can't get the full impact of this place without actually staying here. We currently have seven spaces available, from rooms on the first floor to a deluxe, complete suite with it's own private kitchen area, bathroom and lanai. We look forward to having you as our guests!
