Description

The space

If you are looking for an incredibly peaceful and healing retreat where you can experience a sustainable community vibe and go home feeling completely revitalized, then Banyan Tree Sanctuary is your destination. Overlooking the Kailua Kona coast, you are on sacred grounds and will feel that as soon as you arrive.

We are a vacation rental/retreat center, located fifteen minutes northeast of the town of Kailua Kona. We have several unique spaces, some with shared baths and some with private baths. Our accommodations range from simple 'glamping' (glamorous camping) to beautiful rooms with their own private bath, kitchen, and exquisite west facing views of the ocean and sunsets. The Hawaii accommodations taxes are included in the price of the rooms.

The Kahuna Room is a very reasonably priced accommodation, easily accessible on the first floor. There is a queen bed and a twin bed made up like a couch, but easily converted into a second bed for two people traveling together who each want their own bed. There is a sliding glass door entrance off the driveway as well as a door off the hallway. There is a private bathroom a few steps down the hall. There is a shared community kitchen. Because there is a second bed in the Kahuna Room, we allow three people to stay in the room. The extra charge is $40 per night for a third person.

We are a vegan community, and we ask that while you stay here, your diet consists of all plant-based foods; fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and sprouts. We are also a NO SMOKING facility.

There is a salt charged pool, (no chlorine) an ozonated Jacuzzi, and an infrared sauna available for all guests, and property-wide wifi. There is also a 30' diameter dodecahedron we call the Mother Ship, which you can use for yoga, meditation, or just hanging out. It also has a flat screen TV and a great DVD collection (and subscriptions to Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime).

We encourage you to look at the photos and inquire about any questions you may have. Guests staying with us for two weeks get one night free.

The closest beaches are a 15 minute drive from our door, and are in the boat harbor area. One is a very nice snorkel beach, especially in the morning. The other is a turtle sanctuary with a broad expanse of white sand. One of the top ten beaches on the Big Island is only a 25 minute drive from our door, and that is Kua Bay, about 4 miles north of the airport. We have a supply of snorkels, masks, and boogie boards that you are free to use on a first come, first serve basis.

We provide various healing modalities; massage therapy, meditation, dietary guidelines, etc. and we can set up your dolphin tour/manta ray night dive experience as well. We are long-time residents of the Big Island and know many special places that we can direct you to. We strongly encourage renting a car, as these beaches are not within walking distance.

We welcome children twelve years of age or older.

Come to Banyan Tree Sanctuary to experience a unique level of peacefulness on your next Hawaiian vacation!

Guest access

There is a lap pool that is salt-charged, (no chlorine) an ozonated hot tub (no chlorine) and an infra-red sauna that you can use, and property-wide wifi. There is also a 30' diameter dodecahedron we call the Mother Ship that has a 70" big screen TV and a great DVD collection, (and subscriptions to Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime) and you can use it for yoga, meditation, or just hanging out.

We encourage you to look at the photos and inquire about any questions that you may have. Guests staying with us for two weeks get one free night's stay.

Interaction with guests

We try our best and are usually present for our guests' check in. We offer as little or as much interaction as our guests would like.

The neighborhood

This is an exceptionally beautiful part of the Kona side of the island, it is actually called Kona Heavens! We are in a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood and we are the very last house on a dead end road, so we truly are a sanctuary. There are wonderful places to stroll right out of your door, and it is a very safe neighborhood.

Getting around

There is no public transportation, so please plan on renting a car.

Other things to note

At 1100', we are a little cooler than downtown, and get more rain, so bring an extra sweater and a poncho/umbrella. There is always sun to be found somewhere on the island, but it may not be right here. A headlamp/flashlight is also a good idea, although we have extras if you forget yours. Also a sturdy pair of shoes to walk on the paths is a great idea.

We are a small group of people sharing a very special and unique property on the Big Island of Hawaii. Since some of the areas are shared; i.e. the main kitchen, the dining area and some living areas, we ask that you respect any and all common areas and pick up after yourself. This includes, but is not restricted to: wet towels, shoes, backpack, laptops and other electronic devices, clothes, etc. Certain areas are available on a simple reservation basis, such as the Mother Ship, by putting your name and time of requested use on a little whiteboard by the door.
We are a vegan community, and we ask that while you stay here, you refrain from cooking or eating any animal products, which include beef, lamb, chicken, fish, turkey or pork products, including any type of bacon; all forms of dairy (milk, half and half, butter, yogurt, cheese) and eggs. We are also a NO SMOKING facility, so we ask that you please do not smoke in any part of Banyan Tree or on the grounds.
We have quiet time from 9pm to 8am, which means you are welcome to use the jacuzzi, pool, or common spaces after 9pm, as long as you are respectful and quiet in your movements. Although there is no requirement to do so, if you feel moved to spend some time in the gardens watering or weeding, we always welcome that kind of energy.

This was our very first airbnb and it was a special one! The banyan tree sanctuary is like visiting a family member and a yoga retreat all in one. The sanctuary is a community with one large house and several small bungalows scattered over the property. There seem to be several permanent members who live there and a couple of volunteers who are there to learn about the vegan and yoga lifestyle. I spell this out because it's a unique community and you should review their website before going. Everything is exactly as advertised so make sure it's the right fit for you - and for their sake! Some helpful details. - it's not on the beach but centrally located. It's 15 min from the airport and all Kona activities and water sports. Very easy to get to by car. - at the same it's WONDERFULLY secluded. It's up in the mountains where it's cool, dark, and peaceful. It's quiet at all times and really lets you relax. - Rae and the volunteers are extra friendly and nice. He communicated very thoroughly and responsively leading up to the visit and throughout. He was as available as we needed him or as removed as you wanted to be. Perfect balance. - we stayed in the kahuna room which was nicely appointed and comfortable. It was one of the rooms in the main house. We had a private bathroom down the hall which was clean and just like your bathroom at home. I'd recommend a room in the main house or the dragon room to get private bathrooms. Some of the bungalows have shared bathrooms that require an outside walk so be careful. - there's several large community areas including a kitchen that's very clean for a community kitchen. Every room has their designated fridge space and everything is labeled nicely. Some heads up: - there are designated quiet times (after 9), and it feels like people could hear any noise you make in your room, so be prepared for that. - there was a lock on our door you could lock while u were sleeping but couldn't when u left. So we had to leave our valuables unattended while we were out. We believe his is consistent with the community's principles of trust etc and so we learned to let our worries go. Everything was of course fine, but something to be aware of. OVERALL: it was a wonderful stay at a remarkably unique community. Our only regret is that we didn't make more use of the facilities. Just make sure it's the right fit for you.

Banyan Tree Sanctuary is an incredibly special place, with caring and thoughtful stewards overseeing the land and the people who stay there. I cannot begin to express how peaceful and lovely the grounds and buildings are on this property—I feel blessed to have had the chance to stay here. The people who are attracted to Banyan Tree are also amazing! It was incredibly high-vibration and healing. If you have a chance, definitely book an acrosage session with Benjammyn. It was one of the highlights of my entire trip to the Big Island. I felt like I had come home for the first time in decades. <3

Wow! What a wonderful review, Wendy! Thank you so much. We love it when people really 'GET' what we are about here, and you clearly have. I'm so glad the acrosage session affected you so powerfully, and we hope to see you back again in the near future.

Banyan Tree Sanctuary was a delight! Set on a beautiful fruit farm up the mountain with a fantastic view of the Kona Coast, this retreat was both conveniently located for access to all of Kona and the Island beyond, and yet secluded enough to be completely quiet and relaxing at night. Rae, BenJammin' and company are a small group of owners who open up their home and share their lifestyle with you. For relaxation, holistic wellness, enjoyment of the fresh fruit/veggies, vegan cooking, peace and quiet, invitations by the owners to local gatherings, jam sessions onsite, and other collaborations, this Sanctuary is for you. If (as we were), you are adventure tourists who are interested in finding out more about the vegan lifestyle and holisticism/wellness, this place is for you! If you are merely looking for a cheap place to stay, or to party hard, this is probably not the best place for you. The owners share their home and have systems in place that makes that work with a steady influx of new people. You may possibly find these systems restrictive if you're not interested in the lifestyle. Rae and company very clearly communicate the rules of the house...please take them at face value! I had a wonderful 10 days with my partner based here, and I would come again / am already recommending the place to others.

Mahalo!! ❤️ everyone at the sanctuary was AMAZING and lovely! The place is so peaceful and zen. The jacuzzi & pool are super relaxing, not to mention the view! Rae gave me the absolute best massage!! ️ you have to want to be outside and appreciate the outdoors/nature, but if you do appreciate it you will LOVE this place!

Response from Rae:
We do provide a number of outdoor spaces, but they are completely protected from the elements, and of course, all the rental sleeping spaces are indoors, even the 'tent' structures, enclosed with either glass or screens. It's not the Hilton, thank GOD! ;-)

I am managing several vacation rental houses besides my main residence, so please disregard any of the following comments unless you are going to stay at Banyan Tree Sanctuary. There are no dietary restrictions or requests for any of the other properties that I am managing.

I am the business manager of a beautiful piece of property in Kailua Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii, called Banyan Tree Sanctuary. I have traveled extensively in the US, and have spent time in every single state except for Alaska. I have also been to Canada, New Zealand and Fiji.
I am a compassionate vegan, and have been a massage therapist for over 30 years. I am a very strong advocate for compassion to all living things, and so choose not to inflict any suffering regarding my diet and lifestyle. Living on this property allows me to eat fresh ripe raw organic fruits and vegetables every single day, and I am incredibly grateful for that. To be able to go out in the morning and find ripe papayas, lilikoi, mango, and so much more, is a true gift. I am also a musician (percussion) and singer/songwriter. We have some drums and guitars at Banyan Tree Sanctuary, and our guests are always welcome to play these and join with any of our classes and events.
My motto is simple: love everyone, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Life is way too short to spend any time doing anything else!
This property is very special, and even with professional pictures, you can't get the full impact of this place without actually staying here. We currently have seven spaces available, from rooms on the first floor to a deluxe, complete suite with it's own private kitchen area, bathroom and lanai. We look forward to having you as our guests!
