One of the most spacious apartments/guesthouses in the centre of St Petersburg.

The space

Our 230 square metre apartment is situated directly opposite the garden of the Academy of Arts. The Hermitage, St Isaac's, and the Mariinsky Theatre are all 15-20 minutes' walk away; the Menshikov Palace is only 5. Nearest metro station: 6 minutes. Turn right out of our front door, walk 150 metres, and you find yourself on the bank of the main river, with all of the centre of St Petersburg spread before you. Opposite and a little to the left are St Isaac’s and the statue of the Bronze Horseman. Beside you are the twin sphinxes crouching solemnly on the embankment in front of the Academy of Arts. This is an ideal spot from which to watch the raising of the bridges on summer nights.

As an apartment, this space is particularly suited to large families or small groups of up to 10 people. There are 4 bedrooms (3 with their own ensuite bathroom), 2 living rooms, and a large dining room /kitchen. We have restored the original layout, so the spaces now flow together in much the same way as they did before the Revolution. The rooms at the front of the apartment overlook the garden at the back of the Academy of Arts (a scene of never ceasing variety - a dense wall of greenery in the summer and in the winter an expanse of open white space inscribed with an intricate tracery of branches and the Classical lines of the Academy buildings).

If you are interested in renting not the entire apartment, but a room or set of rooms in our guesthouse, then please see the descriptions of individual rooms elsewhere on this site (Balcony Rooms, Rooms with Dutch Stove, Silver Room, Lotus).

Finally, we do our best to provide our guests with all support they may need, and are always ready with advice and suggestions. And if you’re interested in the architecture, literature, and culture (including the drinking culture) of this fascinating city, then I have a large website devoted to these subjects.

Rates vary depending on season. Discounts for architects, artists, academics, and anybody with a good case to make.

Interaction with guests

We are more than willing to help with any other aspect of your stay in St Petersburg, so please ask (both before and during your stay).

Visa invitations. If you require official visa invitations, we can supply these through our partner, Blue Dreams, which is a travel agency registered with the Russian Ministry of Affairs. For this we shall need to know: your full names, dates of birth, passport numbers, nationalities, precise dates of your visit to Russia (if different from those of your stay with us), and a fax number. There is a small charge (20 euros per invitation, or 30 euros in the event that you are staying in Russia for more than 7 working days) to cover our costs.

Airport transfers. I have an excellent and very helpful driver with wonderful English - Leonid (EMAIL HIDDEN) - who will not only meet you at the airport, but provide a running commentary on the sights during the drive in to the city centre.

Tours and excursions. For standard and not so standard guided walking tours, try peterswalk and sputnik. Masha, a friend of mine, can offer a personal and usually fascinating take on the city in English an French (not a standard tour, but something more personal). Her email address is: (EMAIL HIDDEN) Leonid (see above) can also take you to the palaces at Pushkin, Pavlovsk, and Peterhof, and though not a professional guide, offers motorized introductory tours of the city. Useful if you want an English-speaking, informed commentator and a car in one package.

If you're interested in archtiecture, please ask me for my guide to the architecture of St Petersburg (ebook).

This rental is in a wonderful location to visit St. Petersburg, and is great for larger groups. It is a quick walk across the bridge to downtown, and a quick walk down a pedestrian street with lots of restaurants to the nearest metro stop. A great location with beautiful amenities!

John's apartment was an extraordinary place to stay in St. Petersburg! I chose it for its distinctly Russian feel and it did not disappoint - from the decor to the books on the shelves you will feel what it's like to be a Petersburger. No hotel can do that. The apartment is extremely spacious and airy, even for a group of eleven. Comfortable beds and very well stocked kitchen made it a place we enjoyed returning to after long days of sightseeing. A local vegetable market and a supermarket are right downstairs. John is an extremely gracious and generous host, very easy to communicate with and helpful with restaurant and sightseeing recommendations. We had a unique and unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend staying with John to anyone heading to this magnificent city!

John is an amazing host. We have made our booking five months in advance and John was helpful with all of our inquiries and questions. The apartment is as described, very large, spacious and clean. The hot water and heat worked and there were plenty of kitchen ware and towels. The apartment is amazing and a great place to visit all the main attractions in Saint Petersburg. I would recommend this apartment, and if there was a star rating system, this is a Five Star Accommodation!!! This is out of what John can improve or fix, but only negative aspect is the lowering and raising schedule of the river bridges at night. The apartment is located on Vasilyevsky Island and when the bridges are up there is no traffic in or out of the island. Small inconvenience if you have to travel at 2:00am at night. While visiting the Hermitage museum the building itself (Winter palace) is also the attraction. While visiting Saint Petersburg the apartment itself ( Space and Light in the City--Johns Apartment) is also the attraction.

As Saint Petersburg was slowly awakening after a long winter sleep, John's apartment was already beaming with the light of spring. We have spend many hours eating, drinking, talking and reliving another amazing day in Saint Petersburg at the kitchen table and where gently awakened by singing birds in the still bare trees each morning. Can't imagine how wonderful the island and rest of the city must look once green is not only the color of the Hermitage (within walking distance) anymore, but crowns the parks and gardens of this wonderful city. John was all you can hope for in a host and more as was our friendly and knowlegeable driver Leonid who turned our last ride to the airport into a very interesting crash course 'daily life in Russia.'

John's place is fantastic. It is in a great location as it is only a short and very picturesque walk into the centre of St Petersburg and there are lots of great places nearby to the apartment. The apartment itself is amazing. It is in a beautiful old building and John works to help you wherever he can, offering recommendations and cooking breakfast. If you are from an English speaking country as I am, his help is invaluable as English can be hard to come by in Russia. Overall couldn't recommend highly enough.

I'm English, but I've more or less got over it (lived in Russia for the best part of 20 years, now live in Berlin for most of the time). I'm a translator by trade; I'm also a builder, architect, furniture-restorer, cook. For my unconventional take on St Petersburg, see
