What a great experience! The Bali Cottage is awesome! Not only is it a great experience, but our hosts Karen & Ron went out of their way to make us feel like special guests. While the neighborhood is a bit remote, it is nestled on beautiful Kealakekua Bay. It is several minutes drive to restaurants and conveniences, but bring some groceries and live the fantasy of island life...no job, no commute, no stress! The Cottage is beautifully decorated with imported items and provides a mellow, rustic experience. (The outdoor private shower is great!) All in all, the Bali Cottage provided us memories for the rest of our lives. Thank you Karen & Ron!
A magical & romantic start to our Big Island getaway. We were lucky to stay here for even one night, though it would be great for longer stays. The cottage is exactly as pictured, impressive panels and thoughtful details, and you can hear the ocean. Karen could not have been more friendly and helpful. We were tired from travel, and happily collapsed into relaxation here. The next morning we walked just a few yards to the beach at Napoopoo Park, which was popular with families and kayakers, and has a photo-perfect stunning view around the bay. The cottage is inside-outside (not enclosed) complete with warnings to keep the doors closed so the mongoose wouldn't get in! We had a nice breeze even in July, and no problems with bugs. There's a great kitchen, which would be great for longer stays.
Karen was a great host, making sure to reach out to me ahead of time to make sure we had directions and if we had any questions about the trip. The cottage was unlike any other experience I've had before. As many of the other reviews have stated, it's not for those who don't want a uniquely-Hawaiian experience. The cottage is very much like glamping (glorified camping). We had geckos everywhere, a gigantic spider that hung out with us, and mongoose that tried to break into our bedroom and fought during the evening. The cottage is a minute walk away from a beautiful little beach where you can see dolphins jumping if you're lucky.
If any of these things make you uncomfortable, this is not the place for you. If any of these things make you smile and love the beauty that is Hawaii, this is the place of your dreams.
We got to enjoy an earthquake during our stay, which caused the roofing to move and we sprung a leak in the cottage, but Karen was quick to reach out the next morning to check in and see how they could help remedy the situation. She and her husband were great and were already working on the roof repair and adding some reinforcements for the mongoose as we were heading out.
I recommend this place for anyone who wants a travel experience like no other. :)
We had a relaxing 5 nights at the Bali Cottage. The accommodation is very unique and has obviously been crafted with a great amount of effort from the hosts. We particularly enjoyed the novel experience of outdoor cooking and showering. All parts of the property are relatively open to the elements (compared to inner city living), so bug deterrents are required at some times of day. The hosts provided a number of measures to assist with this, which was good because every bug within a mile radius knows where I am.
The location is excellent, close to Kealakekua Bay which is some of the best snorkelling we did during our 3 weeks in Hawaii.
The hosts were very gracious, we appreciate their hospitality and inviting us onto their property for what was a great segment to our holiday.
Karen and Ron went out of their way to make us feel welcome while also giving us privacy and space for our honeymoon visit. They provided everything we could have needed and offered a breath-taking space. As other reviews mention, the cottage can get buggy at night so make sure to pack bug spray and take advantage of the mosquito netting in the bedroom. If you come prepared you'll have a wonderful time.
The stay at the bali cottage was a unique and wonderful experience! We found Karen and Ron as caring and helpful hosts providing us with all informations needed about the area and giving great insight tips of the hotspots of the west coast area. Being in civilisation but still get the feeling of being surrounded by the beauty of Big Islands nature. We would like to thank Karen and Ron for their amazing aloha spirit. Mahalo! Tina & Reto
