My week at Karen & Ron's Bali Cottage was all I had hoped it would be. They were gracious, welcoming and helpful. I loved the quirky little cottage....I felt like I was in a treehouse! It's a great place to unplug, kick back and relax.
A bit far from town but that's part of the charm. Manini beach is small but lovely. It feels like the neighbourhood place.
I would, and have, recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy a "non-commercial" island experience.
Karen and Ron were lovely hosts - welcoming and helpful. Even the cat, Purry, was a delight. Ron and Karen gave us lots of tips about the area, scenic highlights, restaurants, and told as about a great grocery store for supplies. The Bali Cottage was especially charming, romantic and relaxing. The garden setting is as lush as the photos reveal and we enjoyed making our meals in the outdoor kitchen and BBQ.
We hope to be able to visit again!
Karen and Ron welcomed us warmly upon arrival at this magical, quirky, Balinese/Hawaiian open-air bungalow in the lush garden under the great ficus tree. Have you ever smelled Cinnamon/Jasmin Gardenia!? Created from their collection of antique carved Thai walls and doors and decorated in keeping with the vision, we found the rooms a delightful mix of Asian elegance and Hawaiian casual comfort. A beautiful four poster bed with mosquito netting drape is so elegant. (netting not needed during our stay) Surrounded by Ron's collection of vintage surfboards, sleeping to the sound of ficus nuts falling on the roof and the surf washing in half a block away the light breezes blowing thru, we couldn't imagine a more Hawaiian accommodation. The full kitchen is housed on the lanai so be prepared to have the ants and geckos visit food preparations! We decided we like an outdoor bathroom. Here you shower under the trees in complete privacy with a shower that lights up when the water runs!! The commode area is roofed and curtained off for privacy. The little Manini Beach just a half a block away is a wonderful community beach on Napoopoo Bay where the snorkeling and kayaking is great. And the sunset view will knock your socks off. Both Ron and Karen were engaging and attentive hosts, available but not invasive.
In advance we haten a good email communication, so we immediately found the accommodation. Ron gave us a very warm welcome and he gave us the same a very good introduction to the special features of the original home now. Even with Kareen we immediately had a very cordial relationship. We got good conversation and good tips for designing our time. The house is a highlight for all nature lovers. The location of the bay is excellent. You can hear the sound of the sea, the birds in green. For noise-sensitive are willing ear plugs for de night. The kitchen, shower and toilet are covered but are outdoors, a great experience. The walls and furniture are old 200 years from wood from Bali. Surfboards decorate the green plant.
Karen was a very welcoming host. However, we had a mixed experience. It was our first time visiting the Big Island and we had a very packed visit with lots of activities. What we needed the most was a quality sleep. However, this cottage is extremely loud. Camping would have been a much more comfortable experience. We really like the sounds of the waves and insects etc. However, the tree that goes through the house is attached with some tape to the roof and makes a very very loud noise all night. Earplugs were provided but not nearly enough to filter the noise. However, if you are just relaxing at the nearby beach, the house is lovely and quite unique.
This place is magical,As soon as you step foot inside the cottage you are transported to a tropical paradise surrounded by a wonderfully vibrant garden, the cottage is so well put together to accommodate to all your needs, when you light the candles and sit out on the deck at night the ambience is second to none. Karen and Ron are wonderful hosts. Ron was so great to talk to and very knowledgeable on the area. Kealakekua bay is a stones throw from the cottage, where you you will have the most amazing snorkelling experience of your life, me and my boyfriend snorkelled here everyday, from exploring the coral reef to swimming with a pod of spinner Dolphins, this bay was the highlight of our hawaii trip. I highly recommend this place. Thank you to Karen and Ron for providing such an amazing place to stay
I could not more highly, nor with more enthusiasm, recommend that you stay at the Bali Cottage!
Karen and Ron were a delight, welcoming us with a grand tour that included the beach (literally 1 block down from the cottage) where dolphins sometimes swim! Although it rained the entire time we were here, my fiance and I were never less than thrilled with our picturesque accommodations. The grounds offer beautiful gardens, lush plants, and an impressive surfboard collection. There were many alcoves and places to sit and eat or read outside. It was fairly private, although their house is located on the same property several yards (and trees) away.
The internet service was a nice perk, and so was the friendly cat! There were a few bugs, mostly mosquitoes and small spiders - but since we are the type who usually go camping instead of staying in hotels, this was no big deal. We almost never stay in the same place on consecutive trips, but we hope to be back soon!
My husband and I have lived in Hawaii for almost 14 years. Moved here from another island - Whidbey Island in Washington. Love to bicycle, swim, stand up board, meet new people, travel.
We have lived in California, New York, Washington, Germany, and Switzerland.
Ron's retired Boeing, I am an AutoCAD drafter and work part time at Curves.
Have much Aloha!
