About This Listing
Convenient, simple room for two in funky duplex apartment. Perfect for someone enjoying the city in the day and wants a friendly, authentic Brooklyn environment to come home to at night.
I love cooking and have almost everything you could ask for to make yourself a home-cooked meal if you wanted!
This room is fully furnished with dresser space and can accommodate two comfortably.
I am happy to be a part of the airbnb community! I have had a great experience meeting people from around the world and showing off this marvelous city.
This accommodation is for one of two rooms on the lower level so there will likely be guests in the other room. Since the ceilings are low and the rooms are in the fully finished basement (with a shared living space) this is ideal for shorter term stays.
Guests have a private room as well as access to the kitchen, eating area, city bike key, home theater/game/rec room (with projector!) and patio.
There is a half bathroom that is shared between the 2 guest rooms and the full bathroom with shower is on the first floor.
Interaction with Guests
I want you to feel like you're staying with a friend of a friend, but better! Where you feel like you can ask for the things you need to have a great trip. My work schedule allows me to be flexible/mobile to enjoy the home I have created and am proud of, so often I work in the apartment. I moved to the city 8 yrs ago; I love it, I love sharing it and want to be a positive part of your experience. I frequently go to offbeat/underground theater/art/music events and am happy to give the scoop on the best the city has to offer as well as give advice about more traditional tourist destinations. Or if you're just in town visiting friends or are here for work, I'm also fine with the room simply being a place to lay one's head at night.
The apartment is on a quiet side street in the top neighborhood in Brooklyn for raising a family. My favorite perk - the apartment is 1 block from the city's esteemed climbing gym, Brooklyn Boulders! That and there are some of the cities best restaurants/cocktail lounges/wine bars all within a few blocks.
The R train is 1 block away and the Atlantic Ave hub (2/3, 4/5, D/B, Q/N/R as well as Long Island Railroad) is straight down 4th Ave - about a 10 minute walk. If you grab one of the express trains you are in Manhattan in under 20 minutes.
Other Things to Note
Our resident dog, Baxter, is a lab/greyhound rescue who loves cuddling and does not go into the bedrooms. I sit for friends when they are away because I like Baxter to have company so sometimes there is an additional dog around. This would be heaven for a dog lover but it won't at all bother someone who isn't one.
Guests are welcome so long as they are friendly, discussed prior and cleaned up after.
We are a drug and smoke free house.
This is a quiet, family street so I expect guests to be respectful of the community by not being super loud on the street or in the hallways in the apartment building.
Every Sunday night I have friends over for a themed dinner which guests are welcome/encouraged to partake in. The size of the gathering ranges from 4 to 14 but usually it's about 6-8 people. We cook a big meal, drink cocktails/beer/wine, chat and sometimes play games or watch something on the projector. It's rare that people stay later than 10:30p. No offense taken to anyone who sits it out but it's open to those who are interested.
Above all else, communication is deeply valued so speak up if there is absolutely anything that you want or need.
Ask nicely and I'll teach you how to use the ultra-easy nespresso machine, if you need a little help in the morning.
Sonya is a great host. The flat is only a few minutes away from the subway station. Very easy to travel to Manhattan. Good location in Brooklyn. Plenty of good restaurants/coffee shops in the area.
Sonya was very warm and welcoming from the moment we met her! She has a fabulous location in Brooklyn, and you can swiftly get anywhere in the city from the subway station right around the block. Highly recommended!
I have only great things to say about staying with Sonya. From the minute we got there, she was nothing but friendly, welcoming and helpful. We could come and go as we wanted and we never felt as if we were intruding. Sonya was very flexible and if we wanted advice or help, she was there to help us right away but if we wanted to do our own thing she never had a problem with that. It was great to have our own room in the (very nice) basement and also access to a living room-style area in the basement. The area was great. Close to subway, restaurants and little shops and it only took between 15-45 minutes to get in to the city with subway (depending on where you wanted to go). Her dog is extremely friendly and I'm usually a little afraid of dogs but her dog was never anything but nice. I could go on forever, because it really was a great place to stay.
Sonya was super friendly and helped out. We talked 1-2 hours about tennis and that's was fun.
sonya is a super friendly host! great at communicating. her place is clean and pleasant and is a really good location in brooklyn, the shops and restaurants on 5th ave are just a block away. there are many different train options to get into manhattan, so transportation to and from her place is easy! the dogs are freindly. the projector was super fun at night, sonya generously let me and my son watch, and also lent him some gloves.. i would stay there again!

About the Host, Sonya
I help empower grassroots non-profit organizations striving for economic, racial and social justice use data. I am a nerd and am deeply passionate about my work and open data more broadly but it is not my whole life.
I love to travel - every year I like to see several domestic and at least one abroad new place.
My whole life I have been an athlete - current activities include tennis, skateboard, rock climb, run, bike, and wakeboard.
All of these burn a lot of calories so cooking is a central part of my life.
Great cocktails and very nice staff
Live music in the basement, bocci on the main floor, drinks and lounge.
Beer and cheese joint. Microbrew heaven.
Best wine bar in the city and excellent, non-snooty, knowledgeable staff.
Rock climbing gym I go to on Wednesdays.
Playground for kids and great dog run for pooches.
Shuffleboard club! I play in a league on Tuesdays. Super nice crowd and fun if you want to learn a new game, drink and enjoy food from a truck pulled up to the side of the building. SO Brooklyn.
Classic upscale Brooklyn market. Expensive but super amazing stuff.
One of my favorite museums, they can do more interesting/unique exhibits because they're less mainstream than MoMA and the Met. But quality is just as good.
Wonderful gardens with great programs,
Created by the same group that designed central park. Beautiful, diverse place to jog, bike or stroll.
Saturday morning farmers market - local fresh produce, cheese, wine, maple syrup, pastries, coffee. Great sightseeing, people watching and fun.
