Interaction with Guests
Me and my family lives at the B&B we take care of the guests and we are responsible for providing information and we try to make them feel like at home.
The historic touristic area of Valparaíso, Chile, on one of the most pictures hills. There are a lot of viewpoints and the important Navy Museum. There are also restaurants and cafes close by.
The Yellow House was built in the late 1800´s. It's part of the history of Valparaiso and we would like our guests to make themselves at home, for this reason we explain the map of Valparaiso
Close Elevator Artillery, collective (shared by other people very economical car), bus, "trolley" (cultural heritage electric bus), and you can meet walking the city.
Ana and her staff were most welcoming when Sandra and I arrived. They provided lots of information by way of introduction to Valparaiso. The accommodation was just as described, clean and comfortable, and very good value for the price. The Yellow House is obviously very popular and a great place to stay for a visit to Valparaiso.
Our room at The Yellow House had a marvelous view of the hills and the port, especially at night. The breakfasts were very generous and a great way to start our day. We really appreciated the hot shower after spending some time in South America where we didn't get any hot water. Charly was very helpful the first day with telling us what to see and where to find good restaurants. It was a great experience sharing stories with the other guests at breakfast. Unfortunately, the ascensor was closed for maintenance during our visit, but someone at the desk was always willing to call a taxi for us. We would definitely stay at the Yellow House again, especially so we could eat again at Café Postale up the hill.
We loved our time at the Yellow House. My husband and I traveled with our adult daughter and stayed in the family room that over looks Valparaiso. The view was great day and night. The house is in a great location, just a bit tricky to find (as are many places in that area). We should have been a bit more prepared by asking for directions before we arrived (our mistake). The breakfasts were very good and there was plenty of French press coffee --- delicious ---- and Martin kept it coming. There is a kitchen and fridge available if you want to bring in your own food. Can’t say enough wonderful things about Martin and his hospitality.
In addition to his hospitality, Martin arranged for a tour of Valpo with Boris. It was a fantastic tour and I only wish we had time to take his cooking class. Boris took us on 3 different types of transportation and showed us the best parts of Valpo. Even my daughter, who lived in Valpo for 6 months, thought the tour was great. Martin also arranged a great tour of the winery’s and Isla Negra with Oliver…..another great choice.
Spending New Years at 'The Yellow House' was memorable. Martin & Lisette were like our resident parents! Unlike many B&Bs that we've stayed at, they actually made a tremendous effort to get to know their guests & spend time with them. They always cared about our safety & ensured that we enjoyed every minute of our stay.
We also took their Chilean Cuisine Cooking School on the last day of 2012 which was headed up by Boris. It's a MUST!! Learned how to make ceviche, empanadas, Pastel de Choclo (Chilean corn pie) & pisco sour with a twist.
We also took Martin's recommendation for an Isla Negra & winery tour by taking up the services of Mike the German Pirate. Well worth it!!
Saying that The Yellow House is in an excellent location is an understatement. The views will not disappoint & it's so close to everything & easy access to the local buses, collectivos, trolley buses & taxis. It's in a very safe area & the Artilleria Ascensor is a 2 minute walk, as well as the Museo Naval.
Read some other reviews, and was, frankly flabbergasted. Let's get couple of things straight: If you say the view is of the "slums" and the space does not meet your expectations, you probably don't belong in Valparaiso in the first place. If you're expecting Marriott or Sheraton standards, stick to Miami or Honolulu for goodness sake.
We had a room on the edge of the hill, with a fantastic view of picturesque Valparaiso, from the ocean to the top of the hills. Especially when we returned at night, the twinkling lights were magical.
Martin and Lisette were very welcoming, and the place is clean. Clean sheets, clean towels. Exactly as advertised. Of course it's very small - it's a 100 year old building! The power lines were added, as an afterthought. The whole thing with additions here and there, and stairs every which way, just add to the charm. It's also comforting to know the building has made it through many earthquakes :-)
We would definitely stay again, and recommend it as a great tourist level accommodation, with local immersion. Again, if you're expecting little bars of soap and a chocolate on your pillow, go to a Holiday Inn in Miami. Valpo is not for you.
Also, highly recommend cooking class with Boris, ask Martin about it, or search on tripadvisor!
Martin and the yellow house could not have been nicer. The view of the city from this room is incredible. I only wish my friends and I were staying for more than 1 night. On a side note I woke up with a dead battery in my car in Valparaiso and Martin was kind enough to help jump it and get my friends on the road. I can not recommend this place enough.
We had a terrific stay at The Yellow House in Valparaiso. Martin was so kind and helpful! He gave us lots of guidelines about places to go, see, eat and enjoy. We awoke to find our cruise ship right below our window... But thanks to Martin's explanation, we were not delayed by trying to board the ship; rather, we knew to go to the distant terminal (constructed in shallow waters! Thanks Martin! Great location, comfortable room and wonderful people. We have been traveling for 3 weeks in South America, sorry we could not reply sooner. We're now in Sao Paulo, after visiting Rio at carnival. The weather in valparaiso is so much more pleasant--- dry and scenic! We wish to return soon.
