The Space

Come enjoy our comfortable home in San Carlos, CA., with 4 bedrooms for rent with 3 queen size beds and one full size bed, and 1 shared bathroom with shower/tub and 2 sinks. Each of the rooms also has a desk and chair, which is a great work and study area. The bathroom is yours if no other guests are renting. Our shared space of the living room, dining room, and kitchen provide our guests with the chance to cook their own meals (except breakfast which we provide) and share good conversation. Our four person hot tub is available for your use. We keep our house very clean. We have WiFi, TV and ample parking.

Enjoy our view of the San Francisco Bay, and enjoy the tranquility of our home and neighborhood. San Carlos is a cute, safe and peaceful little town in the mid-Peninsula, located in Silicon Valley. The town is full of restaurants, coffee houses, and boutiques, and we are 3 blocks from the local train and bus public transportation services. We are also close to Hwy 101, 5 minutes from Oracle and Redwood Shores, 20 minutes from SFO airport, 30 minutes from SJC airport and 20 minutes from Standford University.
We can possibly pick you up from the SFO airport (only) for a fee of $25.00.

We love to eat good, healthy food and breakfasts will be simple ones with some organic items as well as coffee and tea. Let us know what your favorite breakfast foods are! We enjoy accommodating our guests!

Wife speaks Spanish and husband speaks basic Spanish and German. We enjoy meeting new people and are great hosts and respect people's privacy. We have lived abroad and traveled extensively, as noted by our eclectic collection of art and crafts throughout the house. We are teachers and are very busy, yet find time for tennis and running. So come join us! We have been hosting guests through this site for over a year and a half, and have enjoyed our guests and getting to know them. We are both very helpful and friendly, as our reviews can attest. A washer and dryer are available, at no extra charge.

When making a reservation, please give us your full name and something about you and the other people coming with you, and what you are expecting in the way of accommodations and anything else. There is a maximum of 2 people per bedroom and you will need to book each room separately. We would prefer to have you check in after 5:30 pm on school days, but are more flexible on the weekends.
Our location and hospitality make our home a great selection.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the living room, dining room, kitchen, patio, and of course the bathroom. We have a piano for you to play, as well.

Interaction with Guests

Upon arrival, we give our guests a full tour of the house and the things we have to offer. Bob and Johanna are here to make sure you are comfortable and have things you need to feel welcomed. We live in the back of the house and do cook often. You can cook in our kitchen as well, we just might need to talk about timing.

The Neighborhood

Our home is located in a very safe area. Its an easy walk into the town of San Carlos and we encourage you to check out the great local restaurants and coffee houses.

Getting around

Public transport is ideal from our home, as mentioned above. We do have a bicycle we can lend you if you need it.

Other Things to Note

We have the bathroom stocked with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, as well as Q-tips. Our breakfast offerings are really healthy and tasty. They include our homemade granola, fresh fruit, milks, juices, as well as an assortment of cereals and teas, and coffee. The top shelf of our refrigerator is devoted to our guests and their breakfast items. You can also store some items in our refrigerator if you need to.
There are two parking spots on our driveway for our guests.

  • My wife and I had a great experience. We stay there for almost a month and we never had a problem. Johanna and Bob are great hosts, friendly, easygoing, willing to help you in anythying you need. Sharing the bathroom with other guests was never an issue in the entire month we stayed there. Johanna and Bob managed to keep it clean all the time.

  • This place is close to the silicon valley area and is convenient in terms of traffic. Parking here is really simple as the hosts have their private parking place. Johanna and Bob are both welcoming and nice people. They provide organic food and drinks for breakfast. Everything in the room is fantastic.
However, there are a few things you do need to consider before you make your decision. First, they got up early (before 6 am) in the morning during working days, so make sure you arrive at their home early for check-in. They do need to greet you and verify your basic information and introduce the room to you in person. For my case, I did not know this and got there at around 10:30pm. That was a bit too late for them and Bob looked really tired. Second, in the description, it says you can have your own restroom if there is no other guests. My mom and I were probably a little unfortunate that we shared the bathroom with six other guests for the first two nights. I am not sure what is the maximum number of guests they can hold, but eight people per bathroom is just too crowded for me. Those guests were nice and easy-going, but if there were less people, I could have a better experience there.
In summary, this is a great place to live in if there are not many other guests. Johanna and Bob are responsible hosts.

    Response from Johanna And Bob:

Generally the bathroom is not an issue for most guests. All seem to work it out and if needed, post a time they need the bathroom for sure. We have been busy lately and do not always have this many guests. But we have four comfortable rooms available and some times there are just a few guests and other times its busier. This is a busy time with many visiting family, graduations and people relocating. The price we charge is very reasonable for the area, in fact we are the cheapest in the area, aside from the "computer crash pad". We enjoy our guests and am are thankful for everyone being so gracious too. We welcome Hao back again for another visit.

  • Bob and Johanna are the reason why AirBnB works so well. There are many other hosts in the area, many of which I’ve tried. Some are great, and others are honestly pretty bad. What makes Bob and Johanna stand out is their perfect mix of attentive nature, making sure their guests feel welcome, and their ability to provide privacy without ever having to directly ask their guest if they need it.
Their room(s) are a combination of simplicity, and value for the money spent by their welcomed guests.
I truly felt comfortable from the moment I arrived (Johanna was sweet enough to accommodate my slightly later flight) through my time spent with them, to the day I flew back home.
i will definitely be making their pad a regular stop, as I’m a frequent traveller and don’t want to miss out on a good thing.
Kudos to them for renewing my trust in the AirBnB site, and for providing a comfortable, clean oasis for a weary traveller.

  • Johanna and Bob were excellent hosts. My wife, our toddler and I needed a place on short notice when our plans changed and they were very accommodating. The room was neat and clean and had an individual heating unit which is a wonderful thing in the Bay area in Spring. For our few days there they gave us a shelf in the refrigerator, access to their well appointed kitchen, and provided bagels, fruit and cereal at breakfast. The main street at the center of San Carlos, not too far away, offered great restaurants and amenities. If you're looking for a great place and great hosts look no further:)

  • Great Hosts!
We were out an about a lot, but for those times we were in the house for some R&R everything was perfect. Good Coffee, plenty of good breaky and fresh fruit too (website hidden) and Bob were helpful in giving us tips for the area and were up for a chat.
Certainly a great place to stay!

  • Johanna and Bob's home was a delight and I recommend staying there. It was thoughtfully appointed with interesting art from their world travels, very comfortable, safe, clean, with convenient parking and perfectly located for everything I needed to get to on all sides of San Francisco Bay. In the morning they even provided coffee or tea, homemade granola, fresh fruit, and many, many other choices. The local restaurants were many and remarkably good. Johanna and Bob were absolutely great hosts. I look forward to staying there again in future travels.

  • Johanna and Bob are amazing hosts. My wife and I stayed at a room in the first floor for 2 weeks, while working for a startup as an intern. Their house is really clean and quiet. Since Caltrain station and downtown San Carlos is within walking distance, it was convenient to go out for dinner and sightseeing for San Francisco. We could have used kitchen, and I enjoyed having conversation with Johanna, Bob and the other guests. If I visit the area again, I will definitely stay their place. Thank you, Johanna and Bob!

  • Johanna And Bob were wonderful hosts. They responded to my requests for information quickly and accommodated my late arrival.

While the Gelbs have parking available on the property, sometimes with a house full of guests and/or visitors, we had to park down the street.

The Gelbs are very generous, sharing not only their home but their time, food and fridge space. My wife joined me later in the week and brought a lot of food that needed to be refrigerated-- Bob not only provided some space but helped with making room for it to fit.

The door uses a keycode combination and so once we arrived and had our own secret key code, we were able to come and go as we needed.

Most of the time, the shared restroom worked fine. However, on two occasions, the timing worked out so that I needed to use the restroom and someone else had just started their shower. A little communication on my part may have helped. Not to worry, just around the corner were a couple of gas stations to meet my needs.

I had some initial problems with the internet but after some discussion with Bob & Johanna, we were able to resolve the problem and was able to have continuous access.

I'm new to AirBnB and didn't understand the policies. Mary and I needed to leave 2 days early and was expecting to see a refund for the 2 days. So lesson learned, it's not quite like a hotel where you can just jump ship early, even with a few days notice.

Overall, Bob & Johanna were great hosts, their place worked well for us and we'd stay with them again and recommend them to others.

  • Johanna and Bob were stupendously hospitable and kind people. I felt very at home there, they had everything laid out well for my stay, including breakfast! I sadly did not get to spend too much time there, but would absolutely recommend Johanna and Bob and their lovely home in the future!

We are two teachers who have grown children that are now out on their own, out of the house. We have a comfortable and simple home to invite others to enjoy. We are very active playing tennis, running and exercising, cooking gourmet meals and traveling. We have traveled extensively all over the world and have lived abroad as well. Johanna loves to travel in Spanish speaking countries and Bob enjoyed teaching English in China. Johanna speaks fluent Spanish and Bob enjoys speaking basic Spanish and German. Bob is now studying anthropology and Johanna hopes to become a professional chef after teaching. Bob is an avid reader, especially history, and Johanna loves Latin music . Since we have stayed often in Bed and Breakfasts, we know its important to have privacy as well as simple comforts and nice accommodations. We are new to this idea of opening our home to others but AirBnB comes recommended.
