The Space

Darling, neat, clean, lovingly decorated and self-contained "little house" (casita) located in Miami's Upper East Side -- right outside the gated community of Belle Meade. Some of you may know the general area better as MiMo, a reference to the Miami Modern style of architecture prevalent along a 20+ block stretch of Biscayne Blvd.

This comfortable casita (it's a small cottage completely detached from the main house) is located in a lush, shaded garden setting -- right behind my renovated 1935 Art Deco/Mediterranean home.

You will have a private entrance to the property, with direct access to the casita and the gate that leads to it.

Upgrades throughout: enjoy the queen-sized bed's comfortable memory foam mattress; high thread count sheets and thick Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels; radio alarm; touch on/touch off bedside lamps

Kitchenette includes toaster/broiler oven, microwave, small fridge, coffeemaker, espresso machine, electric burners, pull-out spray faucet, pots, dishes, glassware and cutlery/other kitchen gadgets. Coffee and tea selection provided.

The bathroom features a shower with good water pressure, upgraded light fixtures, sink/faucet and large mirrored cabinet with space for your toiletries inside.

Also for your comfort and enjoyment: AC, ceiling fan, desk, large closet, TV/cable, DVD player, free WI-FI, books and DVDs. And just outside the casita: a small patio area, electric grill and bistro set are at your disposal too.

Street parking is plentiful and free -- but usually I allow my guests use of the driveway since the gate that leads to the casita is at the bottom of it. And if you are car-less, public transport is cheap and convenient: bus stops are just one block away on Biscayne Boulevard, with easy rides to Aventura Mall, downtown, and Miami Beach.

Access to the community of Belle Meade is right across the street and it's a joy to perambulate -- your walks/runs will be very quiet, very safe, and especially wonderful if you are a fan of art deco period architecture -- this is "Old Miami" -- most homes are from the 1920's/30's, just like mine.

La Bella Casita (by car) is very conveniently located 5 minutes from I-95 and I-195, and just 10 minutes from the beach -- the Kennedy Causeway to get there is a mere three blocks north. Downtown Miami and Miami International Airport are just 10-15 minutes away (taxis each way for Miami Airport usually run $25-30 with one stowed piece of luggage); Fort Lauderdale Airport is about 25 minutes away (taxis each way for FLL run $50-75; airporter vans run $25-30 per person).

The neighborhood is brimming with restaurants (Italian, Argentinian, Thai, Japanese, Vegetarian, Fish etc) mostly along Biscayne Blvd -- most are good to very good and at least one is world class (Michy's is a 2-minute drive away; six short blocks on foot).

Highly recommend you click on the GUIDEBOOK link at the top right hand of this listing to check my recommendations throughout the general area, in the neighborhood and beyond! Other Things to Note

My shih tzu Wallace occasionally comes in and out of the main house and into the garden through a doggie door -- please ensure he does not escape when you are entering or leaving through the gate ;) He is a VERY nice boy...

  • Karen was thorough, friendly, professional, kind, and she provided lots of clear communication before and during the stay. If I had a question while I was out and about, I could just email her through airbnb, and it was like we had a quick, friendly chat. She was really helpful with making sure I had all the details right on my reservation; which helped because this was only my second airbnb trip. The fotos and description were quite accurate, so it made for a stress-free transition from travel to work and vacation. A terrific neighborhood, too, that's was convenient for getting around to different parts of Miami. I definitely hope to be seeing Karen and staying here again. Thank you, Karen!

Also, I had a great stay--on both the business and vacation fronts. The casita made it easy for me to transition between my different roles. I loved, too, that there was a parking spot. That made a huge difference, because we were always changing locations--to different areas of Miami and back to the casita.

  • This is a great little place to stay, exactly as described. There's not a lot of room, as stated in the listing, but it's nice and quiet to have as a sleeping room if you're out exploring Miami most of the day. Clean and felt safe, pretty easy to get around the area.

  • Karen offers a separate garden house which is made up of one bedroom (with kitchen appliances) and a bath room. Her house is conveniently located close to the north beach, which we preferred over south beach, and several very good restaurants ((website hidden) serves delicious breakfast on the weekend). We had some issues with bugs and mosquitos, which should be o.k. now as Karen wanted to spray the place. She herself was very helpful, recommended beaches and restaurants, and also had no issues with our delayed arrival.

    Response from Karen:

I am so pleased Hendrik and his girlfriend appear to have enjoyed their stay despite being annoyed by flying insects -- not a usual attraction in the casita ;) Yep -- it rained very heavily recently, which always contributes to activity in the garden, and a couple mosquitoes found their way in. As I explained to Hendrik, doors must be quickly opened and shut this time of year as it takes but a second to fly in ;) Also there is spray just in case under the sink... He did mentioned ONE plantation bug had found its way indoors from the garden as well -- anyway I've "bomb" sprayed and the pest guy is due for his monthly check-in so everything is once more under control!!

  • We have a wonderful time in Miami. The week we spend at La Casita was great. Karen and her little dog were really nice and totally recomended.
You could have the experience to live in a real Miami neighborhood.
Maybe is necessary having a car in Miami. But you can park in the driveway of La Casita.
The best was the garden we totally enjoy it.

  • Very nice first experience by Karen and airbnb! Her place is very clean and nicely decorated. Great location, we could not hear any noise from the street. The bed was very comfortable. Karen was very friendly. We will definitely come back here again!

  • Karen is a very nice host...but there were a few things my mom and I thought could have made the casita more comfortable.

When you enter through the side fence door at night it's very dark, it would be nice if there was an automatic light that turns on when you walk by instead of the little key chain LED light.

The first time we entered the casita, it smelt of moisture and humidity. Karen informed us it was because of the time of year we traveled that it smelled that way...but we hoped there was a dehumidifier to remove the smell before we entered the room.

The sink faucet was difficult to turn on in the bathroom. To move the knob you have hold the faucet with both hands...when normally you should be able to do with one hand...

The ceiling near the bed area was black. We weren't sure what that was...

There are 2 locks on the door to the casita, one is for the knob and one for the bolt lock. The knob one isn't supposed to be locked (there was tape on it, but you were able to still twist the lock on the knob) we accidentally locked the bottom one, since there was no sign telling you not to and Karen didn't tell us at the beginning as well :( but as always Karen was very helpful in unlocking the door for us!

    Response from Karen:

I have had nothing but 5* reviews and very happy guests since December 2011 and take extreme pride in providing the best experience and environment possible, so I am surprised by these comments after the fact...
I thank Cassandra for her feedback, however i do wish she had mentioned these while she was here -- for example the motion light is there -- surely she saw it -- but the bulb was out (the next guest told me) so that was an easy one to fix.
The AC had been turned off for several hours by the cleaning lady so there was a slight humid smell that went away once the AC was back on a while -- it's subtropical in Miami so not uncommon.
No one else has had an issue with the bathroom faucet so that is perplexing, in fact I just spoke w/ the current guests and they have no problem with it. Had it been mentioned I would have demonstrated how to use it correctly - it is not supposed to turn, just lift...
The ceiling is not and has never been black - I think perhaps Cassandra is referring to a thick thread of darkened glue at the wall/ceiling line where it meets the cork? I wish she had chosen her words more carefully -- it could have been so easily explained had she just asked.
Finally, when Cassandra and her mother arrived I showed them the key to the door where it inserted in the top lock -- the bottom doorknob lock has been tightly taped over on the inside for 2 years, to avoid guests locking themselves out. No other guest has done so because the tape had thus far spoken for itself... But I've taken her advice and put a sign saying 'do not turn lock', just in case.

  • La Bella Casita was the best place that I have stayed at while in Miami. The location was great and it was easy to get to downtown Miami, South Beach, etc. Karen provides everything you could possibly need and she was really nice. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Awesome location, Karen was perfect as a host. We arrived much later than the expected arrival time and we're accommodated with open arms. The Casita is not overly large, but can easily fit 2 people without hassle. The neighbourhood is full of great restaurants (try Moonchine for an amazing Thai lunch/dinner [ happy hour is 2 for 1]).

Definitely give Karen's Casita a consideration, as a host Karen is inviting and knowleadgable. As a stayover, the casita is relaxing and comforting.

  • We had a lovely Easter weekend stay in Karen's wonderful casita! The little house was charming and cozy and had everything we needed and more! We didn't get to enjoy the beautiful yard as much as we would have liked, however, it offers quite an enchanting ambience.

Karen was a wonderful host! She gave us a bunch of suggestions for dining in the area. We chose to have a late lunch at her favorite neighborhood restaurant, (website hidden), which was delicious and only a few blocks away!

Thank you for everything Karen...We would definitely stay at your casita again!

Moved to Miami in 2011 and bought this fab 1935 Art Deco/Mediterranean home with a little house (casita) in the back -- which I've almost completely redone so as to accommodate guests! I grew up in France and England, with the exception of a couple years each in New Mexico and Texas. As an adult, I have lived in Greece, Austria, Texas, New York, Panama, California, Burma, the DC area (Virginia and Maryland) and the Middle East. I have traveled extensively besides, and love to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures. Miami is a vibrant city, a real melting pot of people from different cultures with a widespread affinity for the arts, including the culinary arts! And dancing and music are everywhere... it's a unique destination with a rich history and architectural tradition, and offers so much more than JUST beautiful beaches and spicy nightlife!
