Omar was more than helpful from the start to the end of our stay. We arrived late in the evening and he still came to greet us. Any issues that came up with Mosquitos or leaks (it's rainy season here) were apologized for and seen to immediately.
We probably would have preferred something with no issues like bugs or leaking but I'm sure that now they were brought to Omar's attention they will be fixed. He was a very caring and attentive host.
Came down to Playa del Carmen with my three best friends and we had an amazing time! Staying at Shalala made the experience even better! A beautiful and fun place to stay! The hosts are super friendly and helpful. They answered all our questions before hand and were always prompt with responses. Memo was very knowledgeable and gave us very clear instructions on getting to the local Cenotes on our own. We ate breakfast every morning at the attached restaurant and were so close the beach, bars, restaurants, etc. It was the perfect girls trip! Thanks for everything!
We stayed three nights in the two bedroom house at Shalala. We loved the house and the location was handy for everything. There is music and noise from the local bars at night, but nothing which prevented us from sleeping. In fact it was pleasant sitting out on the balcony at night with a cold drink and the atmosphere from the restaurants and bars. Parking was easy and free, we had no issues getting a space on the road outside. We don't use air conditioning so we didn't miss it, the house had plenty of fans and ventilation so we all slept comfortably. There was one mosquito bed over the master bed, thankfully we had our own with us so my daughter had one too. However if we hadn't I'm sure that the hosts would have helped out. There are plenty of Mosquitos but that's to be expected.
On our final night there was a problem with the water and unfortunately the bathroom had a small flood and the water was off all night and was still off when we left the following day. The bathroom was cleaned for us straightaway. I am currently waiting to hear back from the owners over a refund for the night/day without water.
Our stay at Shalala – or as we affectionately came to call it: our “jungle Oasis in the middle of Playa del Carmen” – was really wonderful. Omar and Memo were very sweet, incredibly accommodating, and mindful of anything we asked for, and Atala (the lovely cleaning lady) could not be sweeter. The location is great as it’s just between 5th and the beach but it’s just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy stuff that 38th really feels like a neighborhood.
The attached restaurant “Fonda Regina” was really yummy and affordable with delicious fresh lime margaritas and an addictive roasted tomato salsa that you pound out yourself at the table (be warned: if you use both of the chilies that come in the mix it will be HOT). It’s also close to some other amazing restaurants including “La Cueva del Chango” with the best fresh fruit margaritas you will ever try and in flavors you’ve never imagined (ask for Santiago – he’s the best server ever), “El Pirata” (just a couple of blocks away) which offers some huge portions of delicious fresh fish for extremely affordable prices, and "El Gallinero DU CHOCOLAT" a super charming French bakery/café/chocolaterie/sandwich shop which is great for a quick bite or to indulge in some signature chocolates or ice creams.
The house itself is just absolutely charming. The whole place feels very shabby chic and you can just see all the attention to detail when it was being built. The listing is very honest in that it's a very outdoor space so there are some mosquitoes but that's the case for all outdoor spaces in playa and that is why they provide mosquito nets to keep you well protected at night as well as several fans in each room. Overall the space just feels very organic and earthy, it almost reminded me on the house in the Blue Lagoon movies, which I happen to be obsessed with. Needless to say: I loved my time at Shalala and would absolutely stay there again the next time that I'm in PDC.
Guillaume and Omar have created paradise here in Playa del Carmen! The ambience, staff and setting are one of a kind! As hosts, they were nothing but gentlemen, and their staff graced us with constant smiles. We will be back very soon! The accommodation was so unique and charming with all creature comforts and character in spades! It is a short stroll to the beach, restaurants, cafes, taxi's, shops - basically everything you need. Also baby ducks a chicken and two dogs made the experience even more magical!
Accommodation is in a great location just off 5th avenue and within a 3 minute walk of the beach. It's connected to a small outdoor restaurant which served nice breakfasts (didn't order lunch or dinner here so can't comment on that but the menu did look good!)
The house itself is very spacious and spread over 3 floors and the decor is 'shabby chic' There is no A/C so it does get quite hot on the top floor but there are plenty of fans dotted about.
It's set in a sort of jungle themed garden with a small pool (this was empty though, perhaps for maintenance) which looked good at night with the candles although I should add that it's a haven for mosquitoes which made it virtually unusable after dark. The owner is well aware of this though and actively tries to reduce the problem although more effort should be put into protecting the indoor areas as we were all bitten a lot whilst sleeping. Come prepared and you'll be fine though!
The host who met us and checked us in was very knowledgeable about the area and was always around to answer any questions we may have had. Overall, we had a good experience here as it represented excellent value for money and is in a great spot in Playa del Carmen.
The home was incredible, like nothing we've ever seen or stayed in. Exactly the easy it looks in the pictures! It is a couple minute was from the beach and right around the corner from 5th avenue. The restaurant on the property was the best food we had while staying in playa, everything was super fresh!

About the Host, Omar
Im a laid back, friendly and educated guy living in Playa del Carmen for the last 9 years. I love to travel, spend time with friends and meet new people. Playa del Carmen is the perfect place for that.
Riviera Maya is a great destination and I enjoy time here going to the beach, visiting new places like ruins, trying new activities (do not hesitate to ask for any advice on what to do or where to go), hanging out with friends, having a drink in a cool bar ( you will find every kind of music and ambience in playa del carmen), ... the property is in the middle of all these options and is quite cool to enjoy it.
I got the unexpected opportunity to manage this unique place. Unique for its vegetation, its decoration, and the natural peaceful ambience. Managing and working here it is pure pleasure. I am a professional of tourism and marketing; I enjoy hosting people, looking forward of my guests, sharing about the fabulous Riviera Maya/Mexico and hear stories/experiences from all over the world.
well, if any details or info are missing do not hesitate to contact me, hope to see you soon
