Stay in an authentic piece of Kauai history. The cottage dates to the time when sugar cane was king on the island, and is in a neighborhood of single-wall structures, typical of the era, built to house plantation workers and their families. The three bedrooms contain twin, full, and queen beds. There is a well-equipped galley kitchen with full-sized appliances, a laundry room, covered lanai, and carport. HDTV and WiFi are included. Beach towels, chairs, umbrella, snorkels & masks are also available for guest use. The property is enclosed by a wood fence and hedges of palms, hibiscus, and other tropicals, creating a quiet, peaceful setting. All the North Shore's attractions -- the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge and historic lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, Limahuli National Tropical Botanical Gardens, hiking trails, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the islands -- are just a short, scenic drive away. The area also offers a variety of shops and restaurants to explore -- something to suit all tastes and budgets.
The yard contains a variety of fruit trees (orange, tangelo, tangerine, lychee, apple banana, fig, and breadfruit) and hosts, enjoy sharing the seasons' offerings. Guests are also invited to pick fresh herbs from the container garden off the lanai. One of the best features of the property is the private, park-like setting alongside the Kilauea Stream. The series of cascades and mini-falls served as the setting for several scenes in the famed 1950s musical "South Pacific," and was more recently featured in "Six Days, Seven Nights."
Interaction with Guests
Hosts live in separate quarters on the property, and take great care to respect guests' privacy.
Smoking, use of any tobacco products or e-cigarettes, or disposal of their wastes on the property are strictly prohibited. Evidence of violation will result in forfeiture of the security deposit.
The cottage is in a quiet, residential neighborhood, providing ample privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. It is not an appropriate venue for "parties". Laundry facilities are a shared space, and hosts may use them while guests are away. A rental agreement will be presented on arrival, and taxes (9.25% transient accommodation and 4.16% general excise) are payable at that time.
We had a great time at Beryl and Jon's cottage. Everything was just as described in the pictures. We would definitely recommend staying there and hope to get back in the future.
We had a wonderful stay at Beryl and Johns North shore plantation cottage. It is a beautiful house, very well set up, immaculately clean and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable.
We received a warm welcome from our hosts, who live at the back of the property and we were delighted to be given free run of the herbs and citrus trees in the yard, incredible for fresh juice!
The property backs onto the Kileauea river which is beautiful with a waterfall a short walk downstream.
We felt right at home in the Plantation Cottage and would definitely love to stay here again if we ever return to Kauai.
Thanks again, Beryl, John and Eli dog!
Fantastic cottage, great location, had a wonderful time. Beryl met us at the front door when we arrived and gave us fruit from the trees in his garden. We would gladly return on our next trip to Kauai. Only caution: Beryl lets you use his wi-fi, but it's in his studio across the lawn. Pretty good connection from the lanai in back, but if you need to be continuously online this may not be the place for you. *Highly* recommended for anyone who wants to unplug--which you should!
Beryl greeted us when we arrived at his guest cottage and showed us around the property. The house looks just as it is shown in the photos -- very cozy and comfortable. We loved it there and felt very at home. The yard and gardens are beautiful and we spent evenings on the back porch, relaxing and drinking wine. It was so relaxing and lovely. The house felt very private and we didn't see the hosts at all, but they were readily available when we had a question about the stove and also we got to have a nice chat about the property and it's history.
We are so pleased to have spent a wonderful and relaxing week at Beryl and John's plantation cottage. The home was airy and cozy and after busy days exploring the island, it was refreshing to come "home" and unwind. The home is exactly as described - the artwork and paintings that fill it our so enjoyable to take in. The grounds are gorgeous with fruit, flora and fauna to admire. Beryl is a fantastic host - his communication thoughtful throughout the entire process. He greeted us warmly and made sure we had everything we needed. Additionally, we enjoyed walking to the small grocery store a couple blocks down the road for little things, be it a bottle of wine or items for breakfast. The location is fantastic. All in all we had a terrific week and felt at home with Beryl, John and their awesome dog, Ili. Thank you so much - we will recommend you highly to any and all!
Beryl and John (and cutie-pie dog Illi) greeted us warmly after a long day of travel and gave us a quick tour of their lovely plantation cottage and property. It was everything we had hoped for and more...a truly idyllic hideaway, set on a gently sloping hill that led to a meandering path to the river and falls below. Our hosts home was set further back on the yard and we shared a grassy lawn that was dotted with herb plants, fruit laden citrus trees and fragrant flowering plants that bloomed throughout our stay.
The cottage was a combination of old Hawaii and modern convenience. It featured lovely furnishings, bright and airy rooms and tasteful decorating that included the marvelous photography and paintings of our hosts, as well as helpful maps and books about the island we were about to discover.
The longer we stayed the more we fell in love with the place. Each morning the sun lit up the living room in the front making it the perfect place for that first cup of coffee and fresh squeezed juice (We were encouraged to pick from trees and the herb bushes to our hearts delight). In the evening--dinner and relaxing on the back porch while listening to river rush had its own special moments.
The North Shore location of the cottage was perfect for our plans while on island-it was a few minutes to Princeville and Hanelei and a bit longer to Kapaa. Hiking, beaching, and kayaking were all a quick drive--as well as quality restaurants and shopping. At the house there was an abundance of snorkeling equipment and beach stuff that saved us any added expense. When asked--our hosts were ready with just the right recommendations for the beach or the restaurant to check out and even took a morning to introduce us to a picture perfect "locals only" morning walk at a nearby former guava plantation.
All of our hopes and expectations of the cottage were met and exceeded--and we are looking forward to a return trip very soon. Thanks Beryl and John and Illi for making your property and home available and keeping it so beautiful. See you soon!!
Beryl was a extremely gracious and generous host. The house was thoughtfully equipped and laid out, attractive and comfortable. We couldn't have been happier with the accommodations. The yard is beautiful, and, amazingly, free of chickens!
Many thanks to Beryl for sharing this lovely spot.
Moved to Kauai from Miami in '93, began teaching photography at Kapaa High School, and bought the cottage, which had been without a roof since Hurrican Iniki. After extensive rennovation, the old house served as a very comfortable home for 12 years, when we built the new "studio" at the back of the property. I retired from the classroom after 14 years at KHS, and now enjoy working in my ceramics studio and hosting guests in the cottage.
