North Shore Plantation Cottage

House - Entire home/apt · Hookui Rd, Kilauea, HI 96754, United States

The Space

Stay in an authentic piece of Kauai history. The cottage dates to the time when sugar cane was king on the island, and is in a neighborhood of single-wall structures, typical of the era, built to house plantation workers and their families. The three bedrooms contain one twin and two full beds. There is a well-equipped galley kitchen with full-sized appliances, a laundry room, covered lanai, and carport. HDTV and WiFi are included. Beach towels, chairs, umbrella, snorkels & masks are also available for guest use. The property is enclosed by a wood fence and hedges of palms, hibiscus, and other tropicals, creating a quiet, peaceful setting. All the North Shore's attractions -- the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge and historic lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, Limahuli National Tropical Botanical Gardens, hiking trails, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the islands -- are just a short, scenic drive away. The area also offers a variety of shops and restaurants to explore -- something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Guest Access

The yard contains a variety of fruit trees (orange, tangelo, tangerine, lychee, apple banana, fig, and breadfruit) and hosts, enjoy sharing the seasons' offerings. Guests are also invited to pick fresh herbs from the container garden off the lanai. One of the best features of the property is the private, park-like setting alongside the Kilauea Stream. The picturesque series of gentle cascades served as the setting for several scenes in the famed 1950s musical "South Pacific," and was more recently featured in "Six Days, Seven Nights."

Interaction with Guests

Hosts live in separate quarters on the property, and share the back yard. Though we enjoy interacting with guests, we also take great care to respect their privacy.

  • Beryl's North Shore Plantation Cottage felt like home as soon as we walked in the front door. Every amenity had been thoughtfully provided for; everything in the house was clean and functioned properly; the furniture was tasteful and comfortable; and the decor was charming. Beryl was a perfect host -- making himself available for whatever we needed, yet offering us privacy, too. The house, itself, is located in the small town of Kilauea and is close to beaches, restaurants, grocery stores, and other activities. It's also a pleasant home base for hanging out and relaxing on the back porch after a day full of sun and waves. Our stay at the Cottage was so wonderful that I know we'll be back to visit soon.

  • Beryl was a lifesaver when our existing housing arrangements fell through while we were on the island. Not only did he give us a place to stay with very little notice, but the home was absolutely lovely! The house is beautifully decorated and had everything we could possibly need to make our stay comfortable. We appreciated having Beryl just across the lawn, but also felt that the space was suitably private. And boy did our kids lovely playing outside in the lovely yard with the dog. I couldn't recommend this home more strongly for any family looking for a place to stay in Kauai.

  • We loved every minute of our stay. Beryl and John were welcoming and excellent hosts. The cottage had everything expected of a home from a washer and dryer to a gas stove and large fridge. The interior is beautifully decorated with wonderful artwork and ceramics created by our hosts. Located in Kilauea, which we discovered to be a very close knit community made up of longtime locals and newly escaped mainlanders (just my observation). Shops and restaurants were within walking distance plus access to the entire North and East Island. Lots of great hikes and beaches minutes away. The home is very quite and comfortable - anytime I needed anything the hosts were pleasantly available to us. Expect more feedback from my partner Ida in a followup message.

  • My daughters and I had a wonderful time while in Kilauea. Beryl was a fantastic host - available when (or if) needed and respecting our privacy when needed.

If we needed something - a recommendation for local flavor, a spice for something we were cooking, or pointing us to nearby beach or hiking trail.

We've been to Kauai before and being able to enjoy the Kauai life in a less touristy way was fantastic!

  • We stayed here in November and LOVED it. The house is darling, the hosts are charming and so helpful and their dog is so adorable we wanted to take her home with us!
THANK YOU for a great stay in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
This is the perfect sized house for a girls-get away (what we were doing!) with two or three people. The bathroom and kitchen would be a little crowded with more people but if you were friendly, you could make it work.
Loved the hammock and chairs on the veranda out back and being able to use the hosts' washer/dryer and clothes lines. Also a bonus - the hosts' have a brother who lives on the island who is a GENIUS at massage. And, he makes house calls!

  • This immaculate home exceeded our expectations and was even more appealing than the photos and the glowing reviews from previous guests. In fact, there were days we had a hard time tearing ourselves away.

My family (we have 2 school aged girls) were extremely comfortable in the 3 well-appointed bedrooms. The quiet neighbourhood, beautiful shared yard, Ili the dog, and the opportunity to explore the stream at the back of the property provided a wonderful home base for our first visit to Hawaii.

We loved the rugged, low-key atmosphere of the town of Kilauea and could have happily eaten at the taco stand and the fish market every day of our stay. A rental car is a must, but if you're like us, you'll spend most of your time within a 20 minute drive from your cottage.

Beryl and John's home is just across the yard. They are generous with their advice (and home baking!) and are available to answer any questions, but offer plenty of privacy. The cottage is well-stocked with cooking basics, spices, condiments, etc, even toiletries from previous guests. It was super helpful to have the use of the beach towels, umbrella, and beach chairs, especially if you want to pack light and avoid checking your baggage.

Don't miss the Hawaii Kingdom huli huli chicken stand at the roadside between Anahola and Kapa'a.

The waterfall picnic horseback ride at Princeville Ranch Adventures was a blast--just up the road from the cottage

  • If you are looking for a beautiful and quiet place on nothern Kauai which is of the beaten tourist track but close to all needed infrastructure like supermarkets, restaurants, gas station etc. and close to a hand full of beautiful beaches this is the perfect choice. The place is very beautiful, clean and offers a lot of space even for families. There is a big garden and a terasse with hammock which is perfect to rest on during a rain shower. Beryl was a wonderful host who provided us with all the information needed and made us feel very welcome in his place. The price was perfectly reasonable. The only little thing to complain about is that things like paper towels, soap, dishwashing liquid etc. were not included. Comparable cottages in that price range in Hawaii we stayed in allways had these little helpers included.

    Response from Beryl:

The cottage is generally supplied with paper towels, an assortment of personal care products (many left behind by previous guests), and other necessities. If any such items were missing, it was an oversight. I always ask guests if they're finding everything they need their first morning here, and hope they would feel comfortable requesting whatever might be lacking. In the future I will be sure to point out the kitchen sink's built-in dishwashing liquid dispenser, and the ample supply of toilet tissue stored under the bathroom lavatory.

  • We had a perfect stay at Beryl and John's cottage. It was our honeymoon but we are the type of couple that barely sits still when there is much to explore (as there is on Kauai) and the house provided us a perfect HQ from which to launch our adventures.

It was spotlessly clean, comfortable and quiet which was great as we were to sleep early and up early. The lanai made a perfect place to enjoy breakfast and dinners, when we felt like "staying in". Beryl and John live on the property but we never felt intruded upon and even enjoyed our daily visits and play with their great dog, Ili.

We had access and used the laundry facilities, which was very helpful. Additionally, there is snorkel and beach gear available for use. The kitchen is well stocked with every thing you might need, including a blender which we used to make liloki (sp?) syrup for breakfast one morning.

    We WILL be back!

DO NOT miss the Shave Ice at TegeTege if you stay at their place, it's amazing. We also had great meals at the fish market and the bakery.

  • We stayed at the Plantation Cottage for 8 days in September. It was wonderful.
HOUSE- The home is beautiful, and very quiet. The kitchen is stocked with all you need to cook or bake. There are 2 double beds and one twin. There is lovely art and plenty of nice dishes to use. The back porch is very nice for eating and lounging. You do share the property with the owners and are pretty close to neighbors, therefore if you are looking for a place to have guests and BBQ outside or play music, this is not that. The home feels very authentically Hawaiian. You do not feel like you are trapped in a complex. You can hear the stream at night and have a tour of the lovely garden which contains lovely local plants.
LOCATION-we love the location because it is about 20 min drive to the "end of the road", 15 min drive to Henalei and Princeville (where you will do your shopping and there are several restaurants) and 20 min drive to the East side of the island. When we drove to the airport it took us about 35 min, but the could take longer with traffic. Basically is is a good place to access North Shore activities and not have to drive too long to get to the South shore and the airport, yet you feel rural. It is about 5 min drive to the ocean, the closest, nicest beach is Anili beach. You can also access Kilawea Falls, and swim in the falls or slide off from the back yard, it is a 4 min walk. - In 2 min walk you can access a health food store, and the best shave ice on the island because it is one of the only places that uses hand made, fresh organic ingredients, Tega Tega, and a taco truck. Besides that it is ver difficult to walk anywhere because there are not sidewalks and crosswalks outside of the towns. I tried to take a walk with a stroller and it was very difficult.- This is true all over the island.
HOSTS- the hosts are very nice and respectful and helpful.
OTHER- there is a stash of snorkel gear and beach towels, which was very nice. Bring a beach bag, we did not have one and ended up using grocery bags. There is one place to park so having guests can be tricky, or if you have more than one car in your party you probably want to let the hosts know.
SUMMARY- this was a wonderful place to stay, I am so happy we found it, I highly recommend this house.

About
Moved to Kauai from Miami in '93, began teaching photography at Kapaa High School, and bought the cottage, which had been without a roof since Hurrican Iniki. After extensive rennovation, the old house served as a very comfortable home for 12 years, when we built the new "studio" at the back of the property. I retired from the classroom after 14 years at KHS, and now enjoy working in my ceramics studio and hosting guests in the cottage.
