This is a one hundred year old modest Portuguese Mansion, carefully renovated and set in the very quiet village of Majorda, in South Goa. The longest beach, with the most beautiful sand in Goa, is about a kilometer away. We have 7 beautiful, uniquely themed bedrooms, the main garden with a 12m swimming pool, private dining and sun bathing areas at the back of the house, and a tent in the high season.

The space
This is a one hundred year old, carefully renovated house set on a very quiet* cul-de-sac in the village** of Majorda, in South Goa. The longest beach, with the most beautiful sand in Goa, is about a kilometer away. Guests are very welcome to borrow a bicycle or grab a lift down there in our customized Tuk-Tuk or Jeep for a nominal Rs 150 per trip.

The rooms are named after the places we have lived in and loved, in Bengal and Tamil Nadu. They all have fans, air-conditioners and en-suite bathrooms. They don’t have TVs or phones. Though either of those menaces can be easily rustled up for children or major sporting events.

The 12 x 4 metre swimming pool is set in a tropical garden with private sun bathing areas. It is cleaned with Ozone, instead of horrible chlorine, so it is like swimming in spring water. The shallow end of the pool is three feet deep so will not suit very young children. We’d be happy to set up a piddling pool in the front garden for tiny tots.

Our original wine list had twin purposes…past tense…chose the latter. As I discovered that like a priest, I had to drink whatever was left at the end of the season, our wine list is now considerably shorter, simpler and cheaper. If you want something special do ask and it should be possible to arrange with a nominal corkage charge.

Goa, India

Goa’s recorded history goes back to around 200AD but it was in the middle of the 16th century that it reached its zenith as the Rome of the East. There are consequently a vast number of wonderful old churches, temples, forts and mansions.

We’ll be happy to recommend local restaurants, bars, beach shacks and night clubs.

Golf – a good nine hole links course at the Inter-Continental, about an hour south of us., with good clubs for rent. Several pitch and putt courses.

Go-karting ten minutes away.

Shopping – excellent jewelers in particular who can clean or mend old jewelry and make new designs before delivering them to you at the house.

Fishing. In local rivers as well as the sea. Apparently deep sea fishing for the mighty Marlin is possible, though reports are still unconfirmed.

Scuba diving courses.

Backgammon, Chess, Liar Dice & cards.

A variety of board games.

Reading – books that are printed in India are very good value and if you give us a list of books you would like to buy, we will try to have them waiting for your arrival. We also have something of a library ourselves.

Bicycling. A guided tour of the old part of Panjim sounds interesting.

Various water sports.

Yoga Courses.

Ayurvedic treatments.

Complete health check at Appollo Hospital.

Dentistry & Tooth whitening.

Bird watching.

A National Park.

The floating Casino.

Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Billiards and Pool at local hotels and Boules chez nous.

Ex advertising writer now runs This Villa with his sister Charlotte. Both born in Calcutta and grateful to be at least half Indian with OCI cards. One or the other of us are usually here at the hotel. We look forward to meeting you.
During your stay
Your Hosts
Charlotte and Simon (a brother-sister team in case you were wondering) were both born and brought up in India. They are the fourth generation to live in and love India and have spent as much time as possible here. They will be delighted to suggest and help organise side trips and places to stay out of Goa to their guests who may be coming to India for the first time.

Charlotte

Charlotte loves India and has traveled extensively in it, though there are still many places left to see. Goa’s cultural heritage makes it an amazing place to live and she looks forward to sharing her experience with you. She has lived and worked in Japan, Hong Kong and London, speaks Hindi usefully and is co-writing a book which she hopes to do more of.

Simon

Simon was most recently Creative Director of a large advertising agency first in Bombay and then in Delhi. He has always wanted to do up an old house and turn it into a hotel. What else do advertising people do when they get to forty? Teach? He loves Goa and feels that India is home. He is a budding cook – especially in a kitchen where many willing hands make light work – and his lunch parties in Singapore, Hong Kong, Wellington and Bombay were invariably long and pleasurable.

John
John has been with us since the beginning. He is an excellent Consultant Goan Chef and would do more painting if he had time. He also plays the guitar. Most of the time though he is busy looking after our guests, the fifteen or so staff we have – and us. He commutes from Chinchinim, about 25 mins south of us.

Hannah and Charlie

Hannah and Charlie were born in Hong Kong and bought up in New Zealand. Hannah is now at University at Melbourne and Charlie is at school in Hong Kong.
