ONLY if that private bedroom is rented is it possible to arrange to stay here in the living room. There is a futon couch that opens to a double bed and a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen bed.
This out of the ordinary location is focused on simple sustainable living with extensive organic gardens on the waterfront of an inlet of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo. We are a mini ecovillage in two four unit apartment buildings 18 miles south of SF and adjacent to the bay trail. We can share wifi, kayaks, a canoe ... and maybe bicycles. Easy street parking. This is in an apartment used for a variety of activities, including our weekly community dinners but no one lives in it.
This is overflow space ONLY if the private room is already rented. The website only let me say it had something other than a real bed if I wrote that there was only one bed, but there is actually a pullout queen size sofa and a futon couch that opens to a double bed. There is also a small very comfy wide loveseat that might make a good bed for a child.
Guests are welcome anywhere in the apartment that they are staying, other than the private bedroom if not rented by someone in your party. It is possible to make arrangements to prepare meals in the kitchen....but we do maintain a primarily vegetarian kitchen...see house rules. They are welcome to wander through the garden and to hang out on the dock. Sometimes there is bounty in the garden and we can share, but please do not pick without checking with host or another gardener. They may also borrow our kayaks for a paddle on the lagoon depending on the time of year.
Interaction with Guests
When I'm around, I interact with the guests as they are comfortable, but also frequently travel. I enjoy socializing with new people, but also respect people's privacy. I may be working on a project in the kitchen or the living room, but will not work in the guest room during your stay. I can provide information about the local area. (If we are away traveling ourselves, someone else in the community will welcome you.)
We are located in a very pleasant, quiet, and safe suburban neighborhood. The street is like a giant cul-de-sac so there's no through traffic other than for the people that live beyond us in the neighborhood.
Downtown San Mateo is about three miles away with award winning restaurants and the San Mateo Event Center is less than two miles away. Caltrain is a little over a mile away, while the closest BART station is near SFO airport, about seven miles away. However there is an express bus stop just a little over a mile away that goes to and from the airport and also into San Francisco.
The best thing of course is that we are facing Marina Lagoon.....great for bird watching.
There is a local bus that starts about a half a mile away that goes west to El Camino and connects to N-S buses and with the Hillsdale Caltrain stop which is about a mile and a half away. A little less than a mile away there is a bus stop for the KX express bus which goes directly to the airport (8 mi N) or into San Francisco (20 mi N). If you have a car, there is generally fairly easy parking on the street. We are a half a mile away from the freeway entrances for 101 and 92.
Other Things to Note
On Sunday nights from 6:30 to 8:30, we have a community dinner and meeting in that apartment....with set-up and clean-up, think 6-9. The community will invite you to the dinner for a donation to our kitchen fund.
The kitchen is not set up for extensive cooking as it is used for other purposes. When used it is a vegetarian kitchen.
On occasion the living room space will also be rented out if the bedroom is already taken as a convenience to those needing a place in our area.
So that I know that you read this, please put the word synchronicity in your inquiry and note that you are a non-smoker.
No smoking anywhere on the property. A quote from a friend's profile, "House and yard is strictly non-smoking! I feel very strongly about smoking. I don't like it, and I don't like what smokers smell like! If you smoke, please do not send me a request. Sorry!!"
We are sometimes able to offer food for breakfast, including possibly eggs from our chickens and other food from the garden, but since the apartment is shared by others....though no one lives in it, please make arrangements with your host for what you are eating and what you may want to bring in. There is no red meat/no mammals in this community space.
We generally are a quiet community. We would expect no loud music or similar activities between 10pm and 7am.
It has been suggested to point out that the cleaning fee is there so that I can provide you clean bedding and towels and that you are expected to pick up after yourself.
So that I know that you read this, please put the word synchronicity in your inquiry and note that you are a non-smoker. I will look for this before I accept any inquiry.
Exactly as described ! I only needed a place to crash and this was perfect ! The waterfront was lovely to sit in the morning to get ready for the day. Very quiet. other residents pleasant, scarce company -
Thank You Sanda for providing me a place to stay in your house.
It took me time to adjust to the new place. But once i got to know, i felt like it was home.
Brian and you were king to me to make my stay comfortable. I should thank Brian for providing the brown mattress that suits me.
And i am glad that i could work in your garden. It was a wholesome environment for me.
Thanks again, i hope if in future i would need to find a place, i can request to stay at your place.
Behind the door of Sanda's house lies a beautiful little ecovillage. With her husband she is part of a small community who all take part in maintaining this peaceful place. We only stayed for two nights but it fulfilled our expectations. In any case, we would surely recommend travellers not to miss a stay at this lovely spot.
Sanda was a very pleasant host. I was in between apartments at the time and she was very accommodating for me and my boyfriend as our plans were unknown. She made sure our stay was great. The location of the Ecovillage was perfect too. It is not that far from San Fran so it was an easy commute in, but you didn’t get the noise and city rush, plus the neighborhood was quiet, and safe. Unfortunately I work full days, so I didn’t get to see the village at its best during the day light hours, but another guest in one of the other rooms said it had great views of the water with a lovely garden out back as well.
The Ecovillage is an interesting place to stay and certainly worth checking out. Are there nicer places on AirBnB? sure. My overall experience is that the price is very reasonable, and the value of being close to the Caltrain, Grocery stores and running trails, makes the destination a winner. As other reviews will mention, yes, you are moving into a community, which involves a garden, and chickens, and has a few rules (no red meat, no smoking etc). For some this may be strange, but in my experience it has been fine.
Sanda was a helpful host and Brian wad a nice person. However, we don't think that the price is worth for what they offer. The apartment is dirty and the toilet is even dirtier. We wouldn't come back and of course we wouldn't recommend it to anybody.
I was out of town when you arrived. I was depending on my husband to clean the apartment....he doesn't think about cleaning the toilet in our apartment, so didn't do that one. I know he vacuumed and washed the floors in the kitchen and bathroom. But I was here a day or two after you arrived. If you were having a problem, why didn't you talk to me about it instead of writing a bad review. I have always been taught if you have a complaint, talk to the person who can do something about it. Did you read my whole listing before you came. I am pretty clear that this is an old building, we are gardeners, and it will never look totally clean. Fortunately, many people have loved being here. This place is not for everyone. I guess I need to do a better job of screening people.
Sanda, was away when we stayed in her place. We had a late flight and arrived around 11pm, but she organized everything and people who lived in another room opened the door and show us the room.
We like staying there. Don't expect anything fancy. I think it's a very good deal for the price you pay. Also it was interesting to find out about eco community.
