In addition to this room, we also have the following rooms available:
For those who don't like to share, we also offer a spacious apartment big enough for 4-5 guests:
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BOOK: There are no lifts in this building. Guests who come with heavy or lots of luggages are respsonsible for their own handling since Nic suffers from back problems. This is one room within a shared apartment. You may end up sharing the place with 1-3 other guests, or have it completely to yourself, depending on time of year. Also, we ourselves do not live in the apartment, but a few streets away.
About the room: 1961 features a queen bed recommended by a chiropractor. Therefore it is a 'firm' mattress, and the occasional Western guest finds it 'uncomfortable'. Same goes for the pillow. This is typical of traditional beds, which is part of the authentic experience we're trying to create.
Located in the 'Heart of Kowloon', on the 4th floor of a traditional 'walk-up' building in Mong Kok, our nostalgic apartment offers you a genuine glimpse of life for the common folks of Hong Kong.
The building is conveniently located within close walking distance to a variety of things:
- across the road from A21 (airport express) bus stop
- 3 min. walk to Prince Edward MTR station
- 5 min. walk to the Goldfish Market
- 7 min. walk to Fa Yuen Street Market (bargain-priced fashion)
- 7 min. walk to the Flower Market
- 10 min. walk to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
- 10 min. walk to the garment and electronics district
- 9 min. walk to Mong Kok East MTR station (direct line to New Territories and Shenzhen)
In addition, China travel agencies and bus/train companies are literally across the road, making journeys to and from the mainland extremely easy to arrange.
And being in the 'Heart of Kowloon', it really doesn't take long to get to other cultural gems:
- 5 min. on the subway to Ladies Market, Temple Street Night Market, Jade Market.
- 10 min. on the subway to get to Hong Kong Island.
Very conveniently located. Nic & Trig are wonderful and helpful hosts, and try to assist your stay in HK as much as they can.
The room is as per photograph.
It's facing the street, so can be a little noisy at night, but only because it's the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong.
Great location and easy access to public transit. Enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong and Nic was very helpful and informative about what to do and see in Hong Kong.
All the reviews are true! I didn't have the luxury to meet Nic right away as he was traveling but his sister-in-law met me. She was very sweet and despite my late arrival walked me to the grocery store and made sure I was comfortably settled in. Wonderful experience and location was key- perfect and fantastic price. Would come here again for sure.
Great location and Nic was a friendly and very helpful host, with good regular communication. In only had 24 hours in Hong Kong, so appreciated some direction in terms of things to do, getting around, which bus to take where etc. The room and apartment also reflected the description, I would happily stay here again next time I'm in Hong Kong.
Nic was simply a nice and gracious guy and so is his family whom we briefly got to meet when we bumped into them at Disneyland (small world!). Aside from being clean, creatively furnished and convenient (walking distance to the Prince Edward and Mong Kok stations, as well as other places of interest around the Mong Kok neighborhood), we are very thankful to Nic for welcoming us, helping us feel at home and making our first airbnb and HK experience a smooth one - from check in to check out. Will definitely stay here again if we are ever in HK!
This place was as authentic and as real as 1961 as it can get. It is a very simple accommodation, no frills. If you are looking for "a day in the life of a 1960s Hong Kong Resident" this is the place to be. The room was neat. Personally, I found the bed a little hard, but with the description of the room. The toilets were small, but it adds to the experience of staying at the apartment.
Nic was friendly and was easily contactable during our stay.
Apartment 1961 truly is a genuine Hong Kong experience. The apartment itself it straight out of a 50s Chinese movie set and the Mongkok area has a very Chinese feel. I spent quite a bit of time here just wondering surrounding streets taking in the atmosphere. The apartment is close to all conveniences including the subway which gives access to pretty much anywhere you need to go. I got the bus from & back to the airport; cheap & maybe easier than the subway. Nic gave easy to follow directions & met me at the appointed place bang on time. Throughout my stay Nic gave lots of advice on where to go etc. I felt very safe staying in this area & had the impression that Nic would have been more than happy to help in any way if I needed anything - he was a great host. There were 2 other people staying the apartment & they were both great housemates. The air con worked really well, there is a good little library, notice board, complimentary tea, small shared fridge & of course the decor is extremely stylish. The bed was firm but that is actually to my preference. Also the shower has an awesome rainwater style showerhead - it's fantastic!
Absolutely wonderful! The room is perfect, especially if you're a Wong Kar Wai fan like me and appreciate 1960s Hong Kong nostalgia. Nic is an exceptional host who offers incredible hospitality and assistance to his guests. The room decor set the perfect tone for my stay in Hong Kong (first time!), location is easy to access, but most of all Nic & Trig are genuinely excited to share their love for Hong Kong with travelers. I only wish I could have stayed longer and I hope one day I can return the kindness they showed me. Thank you for making my trip to Hong Kong so very special!
My two night stay was great. The apartment is clean and well furnished, and the decor is very tasteful. It reminded me of Wong Kar-Wai's movies. The building is shabby but that is made up for by its convenient location, <5 min from Prince Edward metro station. I arrived on a late night flight and Nic was there to greet me, introduce me to the apt and answers some questions about HK. Overall an excellent experience!
Nice room, clean and comfortable. It's very convenient to travel to any place in HK. There is also a lot of restaurants and snack bars around, so this room is suitable for food lovers like me :).
