This very large bedroom, because of its size and layout is ideal for either small groups or the single traveler. There is a queen bed, mid-century armchair and ottoman, desk, a bookcase stocked with classics, original pieces of art, and GORGEOUS VIEWS OF THE PARK and Plaza. We also have two additional folding beds for larger parties. The space is largely self-contained so that guests may enjoy a bit of privacy if they choose. We offer 4 adult bicycles for those interested in exploring Prospect park and the City in general by bike
Guests have access to the entire house, including kitchen, bathroom, living room, and an additional large bedroom if it is available.
I am very rarely in New York these days but we do have a wonderful woman named Alison who lives in the apartment full time and takes great care of our guests. She does work full time but is generally home in the evenings to answer any questions or field any requests guests may have.
What we love most about our historic neighborhood is the access to the park. In an often hectic City, Prospect park is 536 acre oasis of nature and hosts countless activities including a new state-of-the-art ice skating rink, a lake and boathouse, horseback riding, running, biking and much more. Also in the neighborhood are hundreds of Victorian mansions which are well worth a nice walk or bike ride. There are very many great restaurants and shops within walking distance, as well as the beautiful and historic Grand Army Plaza.
Public transport could not possibly be any easier. The subway station is adjacent to the building, right outside your front door.
I stayed for 10 nights and was very happy with the experience. Felt like home by the end. It's a lovely apartment, interesting decor, well equipped and very conveniently located on the Q train line. Al is organised and efficient at replying to emails, and has very friendly helpers to keep the place in shape. Appreciated the breakfast foods provided.
I found the room comfortable, and warm enough in February with the heater on. It gets noise from the street and the tenants above, but it's not a big deal. I think the room would be improved with better curtains to dim the street lights and maybe with the ability to lock the bedroom from the outside when going out, as there was a high turnover of guests in the other 2 rooms, most of whom I never met/saw.
I spent most of my time in Manhattan and didn't see much of the neighbourhood, but I never felt unsafe... the journey from building front door to subway station takes 1 minute, and I had no issues riding the subway and walking back very late at night as a solo female traveller.
Overall, very happy with my choice to stay here. Would recommend :)
Al is a great host, ready to help you with anything (even if not present). The apartment looks much bigger, cleaner and sunnier in the photos than in real life — as it often happens with Airbnb listings. Nevertheless the room in question is spacious enough and seems clean, just don't look under the bed if you're fastidious. The Prospect park is right in front of the house, but you won't get a gorgeous view on it. In winter the radiator inside the room rattles wildly and in the end we asked for an electrical one. Other rooms in the apt accommodate 6 or more people — so you get the idea of how common areas such as kitchen and bathroom look like. In one word they look bearable, but could have been better. We've stayed chez Al at Christmas so the price was three times higher than the one it is actually worth of. All in all it was a fair experience — keep in mind that in America you always get what you pay for.
This was our first experience with An Airbnb apartment, so not a lot to compare with. A few comments:
#Location above subway was great.
#Communication with Al & Gabrielle was great.
#For us it was not clear that we had to share the apartment (bathroom, kitchen, living room) with other guests. Except the person who lives permanent in the apartment, which we have not seen.
#The bedroom and bathroom were not clean.
#The weekend that we arrived it was very clear that someone was/or has been smoking in the apartment.
Al and his friend Gabrielle made me feel very much welcome. He responded to emails very quickly and was always very easy to get in touch with for any queries.
The room I stayed in was a nice quaint room, very comfortable and spacious.
All in all, it is a really great place to stay for those on a budget. Extremely close to the Metro station, only about 30min to Times Square and minimal hassle getting in and out.
Can't comment on the neighbourhood as I didn't have the chance to explore it properly. Spent the trip exploring Manhattan as it was a short trip.
Al's apartment worked out perfectly for this recent visit to NYC. Booking, arrival and checkout and all communications with Al and Gabrielle via email/ texts/ phone call were easy with quick responses from either or both in a beat. I enjoyed the apartment very much and, in particular, my roomy bedroom at the end of the long hallway, with its high ceiling, clean sheets, quad pillows, a firm queen bed, a big window, a comfy puffy seat for reading, a closet with plenty of hangers . There's coffee and something to nibble on in the morning before one starts the day. The 3BR apartment's ambience is unfailingly NYC- being located just across the entrance to lovely Prospect Park and an easy 2nd floor walk up. Is there constant traffic noise? Expectedly so. Does one hear the low rumble of the Q? (the stop below, very convenient), absolutely. But that makes it New York and nothing that a pair of earplugs will remedy. I would absolutely recommend booking one of Al's rooms in a beat should an interest in exploring Brooklyn (or nearby Manhattan) arise. Thanks Al & Gabrielle!
Okay, this was the very very very best of any of the many Airbnb-s we ever had. And we doubt if there ever will be a better one. Only maybe if we come back to Al’s.
It’s not just the appartment , located overwiewing the beautiful Prospect park. It’s not just the neighbourhood, a lovely spot in Brooklyn, great vide, stores all around and better: metrostation within 100 meters.
Is it the breakfast which comes along with the stay? We could even express our preferences! Where to find that? I know some hotels which could use Al’s hospitality manners as a guideline.
Did I mention the use of one of the many bikes? We had the opportunity to transport in true New York vibe style on some nice retro racebikes.
For us it was the whole package experience. Great stay, best host, big warm memories. Go there!
