About This Listing
This very large bedroom, because of its size and layout is ideal for either small groups or the single traveler. There is a queen bed, mid-century armchair and ottoman, desk, a bookcase stocked with classics, original pieces of art, and GORGEOUS VIEWS OF THE PARK and Plaza. We also have two additional folding beds for larger parties. The space is largely self-contained so that guests may enjoy a bit of privacy if they choose. We offer 4 adult bicycles for those interested in exploring Prospect park and the City in general by bike
Guests have access to the entire house, including kitchen, bathroom, living room, and an additional large bedroom if it is available.
I am very rarely in New York these days but we do have a wonderful woman named Alison who lives in the apartment full time and takes great care of our guests. She does work full time but is generally home in the evenings to answer any questions or field any requests guests may have.
What we love most about our historic neighborhood is the access to the park. In an often hectic City, Prospect park is 536 acre oasis of nature and hosts countless activities including a new state-of-the-art ice skating rink, a lake and boathouse, horseback riding, running, biking and much more. Also in the neighborhood are hundreds of Victorian mansions which are well worth a nice walk or bike ride. There are very many great restaurants and shops within walking distance, as well as the beautiful and historic Grand Army Plaza.
Public transport could not possibly be any easier. The subway station is adjacent to the building, right outside your front door.
Communication with Al was good and easy. He was not there when we stayed in his place. He made sure we got a key and there was someone we could text in case of problems. The appartement as such was ok but it's a lot more run down than it looks in the pictures. Also it was not very clean at all, lots of hairs in the bathroom and a thick layer of dust under the beds. It was clear that no serious cleaning had been done for too long. Beds and sheets were clean tough.
Good access to the subway, shops around the corner, but not a very interesting location.
All in all not a place I would visit again.
I felt very welcomed and it easy pretty easy to find the keys after I spoke to Emma. (The woman who takes care of the property.) Al does a lot to make people feel welcome in his home which is great.
The building was a little rough around the edges on the exterior but Al's place is nice. My biggest complaint was I didn't realize that there could be up to 5 people staying in the place with me at the same time. The first night 2 women occupied 1 room and a father and his 2 sons occupied another. The next night 5 people took over the room where the father and sons stayed.
This was definitely not clear in the listing. All in all, it worked out. But some general concerns were:
Street noise. It was so loud! I had to sleep with headphones in my ears and use an audio app on my phone to drown out the noise.
Generally cleanliness of the common areas. My room was very clean, but the bathrooms and kitchen and main hallway were not. Probably due to all the people staying there at one time.
The room was very affordable, but knowing that up to 5 additional people can stay with you makes this place a bit more of challenge depending on what you are comfortable with.
Emma and Al were great hosts in both their presence and absence. While Al was away, Emma left treats and sweets for guests and prompt in response to any questions I had throughout my trip while Al is super thorough about operations and tips prior to your arrival. The space is comfortable and just as pictured and close to plenty of modes of transportation. If searching for great value and are willing to share the home with other guests, Have at it! Thanks guys!
We stayed in Al's apartment for nine nights and had a really lovely time. The room is beautifully decorated and the bed was really comfy. Emma, who looks after the apartment, was very nice and mostly everything was clean.
As other reviewers have commented, it is loud at night and a proper curtain would make a huge difference to the room. But the location was perfect - it was a neighbourhood we wouldn't have visited otherwise, and we found great food on Washington Ave and the best laundromat over the road. And being right above the subway was a huge bonus.
All up, I would definitely recommend staying here - just bring your earplugs and eye mask.
We loved staying here, we stayed at Al's place in Brooklyn for 8 nights and found it to be very affordable, spacious, had great heating, good kitchen which included supplies we could eat and is in a great location by Prospect park which is huge and also right by the subway, supermarket and shops. The bed was really comfy, the room included a tv so we could watch movies in bed and was generally just a nice place to come home to when you're exhausted from walking around NYC all day!
