CASA CIELO IS SURROUNDED BY HISTORY AND CULTURE, AND IS A SHORT WALK FROM THE BEACH.
The Casa lies in the heart of Scalea’s historical centre, where a warm welcome and a very traditional Italian holiday tailored around your every need awaits you.
The rooms in the house are double bedroom en-suite with private sea-view lounge which can also become a twin-room, and a second double en-suite bedroom also with it's own private lounge.
A relaxed, private and personal holiday is assured, for the duration of your stay. Our rates are for bed and breakfast but we also offer half-board at a very good price.
Casa Cielo boasts of the finest stone carved doorway in the town if not the area. The obscure date chiselled into the artwork seems to read 1724 but it is believed that the house itself is of an earlier time dating back some 500 years. Although the splendour and size of the Casa cannot be appreciated from the medieval alleyways in which it sits, these are soon realised upon entering the property.
Once through the door you may feel as though you are stepping back in time as the house is slowly being restored to a former era when Italian murals adorned the walls. The domed ceiling hall with its stone carved pillars is depicted as a small chapel dedicated to martyr and warrior saints.
“CIELO translates as HEAVEN.”
Climbing the marble steps takes you into the large dining room from where you quickly realise the elevated position of the house. A tall windowed doorway opens onto the balcony from where one has splendid uninterrupted views. This vista can be appreciated even more from the roof terrace where evening drinks or dinner watching the sun setting is memorable, the balconies and terrace are available to all guests.
From the terrace to the east stand the mountains of the Pollino national park, while to the south the Lao plain and Scalea stretch out to the distant fishing town of Diamante and the island of Cirella. Look west and there lies the blue waters of the Mediterranean, its beaches less than a ten minute walk from the Casa’s doors.
Scalea has for many years been a major holiday resort for the Italians. Having nine kilometres of unspoilt beach lapped by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and framed by a spectacular mountain backdrop is just one of the reasons for its popularity.
“SIT IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD PIAZZA WITH FRIENDLY LOCALS.”
Calabria is now known as one of the last bastion of traditional Italian life, here for the duration of your holiday you can see it, live it, eat it, and be it!
“TAKE COFFEE AT SIDEWALK CAFES WITH TODAYS STYLISH ITALIANS.”
The old town of Scalea dates back some 900 years, but with the new town at its feet one can experience the old and the modern ways of Italian life.
“DISCOVER ITALY’S UNDISCOVERED”.
Take three national parks with scenery of outstanding natural beauty, a rugged coastline of breath-taking views, add warm hearted people and a fabulous all year round climate, sprinkle with the best of Italian cuisine and wine, welcome to Calabria!
SCALEA is a town of two parts; one is on the low plains of the river Lao, the other is as it ascends up the hill to the small community of the Centro Storico (historical centre), the old town. A very popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially the Neapolitans the town is slowly being discovered by more foreign tourists. However as the Italian holiday season is mainly August this means that Scalea and its residents live ‘that’ almost uninterrupted way of life for most the year. Yet this holiday idyll either in its own confines or on its doorstep has it all.
Casa Cielo is a no smoking establishment..this includes its balconies and roof terraces
The rooms were lovely as were the hosts. The view from the balcony was a delight morning and night. Clive had many recommendations for restaurants and day visits, all of which were worth considering. The old town of Scalea is a labyrinth of passage ways full of history.
First of all I want to thank Clive and Kathryn for hosting me and my daughter! You made our vacation unforgettable.
Clive and Kathryn are very helpful and nice.
Clive's tips where to eat, to sunbathe, to explore surrounding area are very useful. His stories are very interesting and his breakfasts are very tasty!
Casa Cielo house is unique place. Visit it and you will fall in love with its aura!
About room: it's clean, bright and tidy.
Imagine that after visiting astounding towns and beaches of Calabria you are coming back not to some anonymous hotel cell with tv, but to a truly unique house which projects its beautiful surroundings inside it and mixes them with it's own personality. This is Casa Cielo.
Casa Cielo is indeed very unusual house right in the middle of old town, hand painted and furnished by it's host Clive and his wife Kathryn.
Wall paintings and decors are inspired by the landscapes of Calabria, biblical themes, Scalea locals and god knows what else. After taking a closer look at the dolls and artifacts in the house and talking to Clive you might realise that your hosts are not just an ordinary couple. Later you will remember them as the ones who made your journey quite extraordinary and fascinating.
Your basic needs such as clean room, delicious breakfast, always cold drinks in the fridge or laundry service are fulfilled with such a care and perfection that you are never ever distracted from enjoying your stay.
Walk outside the house and you are in medieval centro storico with numerous stairs, authentic houses and hidden corners. Go down the hill to find lively and loud promenade area with bars and shops still open well after midnight. You can spend all days sunbathing on the beach and eating at local restaurants, which offer very fresh and inexpensive food. Try "business lunch" for 10€ with wine after which the only business you can do is siesta somewhere in the shade. Then leave a quarter of delicious neapolitan pizza at the dinner at Don Pedro's, because you can't physically eat anymore after all these antipastas, pay 55€ for 4 persons (because they know you know Clive) and walk out in silent amazement.
Sunbathing and eating in Scalea is very nice, but if you want to experience much more than that - meet your perfect guide, who also happens to be your host - Clive. He obviously knows the region inside out and will point you to some amazing places in Calabria. We followed his recommendations and every site without exceptions surpassed our expectations. Not one place was the same, each had it's own flavour and feel and most of the towns we visited were hardly mentioned in our travel guides.
Perfect place, amazing hosts, highly recommend.
Great stay here with a family of 5! Casa Cielo is located in the Centro Storico, which is the old town of Scalea. It felt like we were going back in time, walking through the medieval staired pathways. The rooms were nicely appointed, with amazing artwork from the host Clive adorning the walls. The best part was the amazing view of the sea, from the terrace, which we enjoyed every night of our stay. The hosts Clive & Katherine were amazingly welcoming to us. Clive is definitely an entertaining character, with a wealth of stories, opinions, and useful information about the area. He is also an amazing cook -- it is definitely worth your while to book a dinner with him if you can. Casa Cielo is close to the beach, which we enjoyed immensely during our visit. The only warning is that if you are not fit or have bad knees, the many steps of Centro Storico can be a bit much -- it was somewhat hard on my 78-year old mother-in-law.
Casa Cielo is a great bet if you are interested in discovering the hidden treasures of Calabria and Scalea in particular. We would definitely come back again!!

About the Host, Casa
Clive, originally a Black Country man (Brierley Hill South Staffordshire/West Mids.) and Kathryn, a Lancastrian (Leyland/Chorley), lived in Holderness in the East Riding of Yorkshire for several years before moving to Scalea some years ago.
After much house hunting we found Casa Cielo, a house that had seen better days, yet its former glory years still shone through the disrepair. Twelve months of work bought the Casa to a livable state, and within eighteen months we had moved here. The rest of this story is better told over a bottle of wine one summers evening on the roof terrace, watching the sun sink into the sea.
Now established Italian residents we have embraced the Calabrian way of life and become a well known addition to the small community of Scalea’s Centro Storico. We have built a popular and well established business that has entertained guests from all over the World, some who have returned time and again, and many we now class as close friends.
Over the years we believe we have gathered a great knowledge of the local area and Calabria itself. And are always willing to tell you of the history, legends and customs of places you may want to visit. We can tell you of the places to go and the easiest way of getting there. We can also advise you where to shop, and know the strengths and weaknesses of all the local restaurants, bars and cafés.
Our happiness comes from the satisfaction of making sure that while our guests experience the “Italian life” they also have a holiday they will remember for years to come
