CASA CIELO IS SURROUNDED BY HISTORY AND CULTURE, AND IS A SHORT WALK FROM THE BEACH.
The Casa lies in the heart of Scalea’s historical centre, where a warm welcome and a very traditional Italian holiday tailored around your every need awaits you.
The rooms in the house are double bedroom en-suite with private sea-view lounge which can also become a twin-room, and a second double en-suite bedroom. The houses old olive oil and wine store that is reached from outside the house has also been converted into an en-suite bedroom.
A relaxed, private and personal holiday is assured, for the duration of your stay. Our rates are for bed and breakfast but we also offer half-board at a very good price.
Casa Cielo boasts of the finest stone carved doorway in the town if not the area. The obscure date chiselled into the artwork seems to read 1724 but it is believed that the house itself is of an earlier time dating back some 500 years. Although the splendour and size of the Casa cannot be appreciated from the medieval alleyways in which it sits, these are soon realised upon entering the property.
Once through the door you may feel as though you are stepping back in time as the house is slowly being restored to a former era when Italian murals adorned the walls. The domed ceiling hall with its stone carved pillars is depicted as a small chapel dedicated to martyr and warrior saints.
“CIELO translates as HEAVEN.”
Climbing the marble steps takes you into the large dining room from where you quickly realise the elevated position of the house. A tall windowed doorway opens onto the balcony from where one has splendid uninterrupted views. This vista can be appreciated even more from the roof terrace where evening drinks or dinner to sit and watch the sun setting is memorable, the balconies and terrace are available to all guests.
From the terrace to the east stand the mountains of the Pollino national park, while to the south the Lao plain and Scalea stretch out to the distant fishing town of Diamante and the island of Cirella. Look west and there lies the blue waters of the Mediterranean, its beaches less than a ten minute walk from the Casa’s doors.
Scalea has for many years been a major holiday resort for the Italians. Having nine kilometres of unspoilt beach lapped by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and framed by a spectacular mountain backdrop is just one of the reasons for its popularity.
“SIT IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD PIAZZA WITH FRIENDLY LOCALS.”
Calabria is now known as one of the last bastion of traditional Italian life, here for the duration of your holiday you can see it, live it, eat it, and be it!
“TAKE COFFEE AT SIDEWALK CAFES WITH TODAYS STYLISH ITALIANS.”
The old town of Scalea dates back some 900 years, but with the new town at its feet one can experience the old and the modern ways of Italian life.
“DISCOVER ITALY’S UNDISCOVERED”.
Take three national parks with scenery of outstanding natural beauty, a rugged coastline of breath-taking views, add warm hearted people and a fabulous all year round climate, sprinkle with the best of Italian cuisine and wine, welcome to Calabria!
SCALEA is a town of two parts; one is on the low plains of the river Lao, the other is as it ascends up the hill to the small community of the Centro Storico (historical centre), the old town. A very popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially the Neapolitans the town is slowly being discovered by more foreign tourists. However as the Italian holiday season is mainly August this means that Scalea and its residents live ‘that’ almost uninterrupted way of life for most the year. Yet this holiday idyll either in its own confines or on its doorstep has it all.
Casa Cielo is a fantastic place to stay. Clive and Kathryn are lovely hosts with many stories and helpful hints about the local area. Clive's breakfasts were very welcome, especially after a month of espresso and cornettos for breakfast, and the town of Scalea is well worth a visit. Highly recommended.
My original intention was only to stay one night at Casa Cielo on my journey from Naples to Sicily, but the warm welcome, friendship and hospitality given by Kathryn and Clive enticed me to stay another two. The direction I was given were perfect and I was able to find the house easily in the myriad of allies and walkways that make up the beautiful historic town of Scalea. Casa Cielo is a house with a unique character all to itself with splendid views of the sea and mountains, the bedroom was of good size, clean fresh and airy and I also had the use of my own private lounge. The breakfasts were very substantial and a welcome change from the usual Italian coffee and cake. If you do stay at the casa I also recommend that you eat there at least once as the food is fantastic. I have already booked to stay at Casa Cielo on my return journey.
We travelled to the beautiful town of Scalea in mid July of 2012. Clive was kind enough to meet us at the train station to take us to Casa Cielo. Once we got there, he took us on a tour around the town, pointing out the best places to eat, shop and relax on the beach. The room we stayed in was beautiful and the terrace offered a stunning view of all of Scalea as well as the mountains in the distance. Each morning Clive cooked a truly amazing breakfast but the best was the supper we got to experience with some of his local friends, made by Clive himself. His authentic Calabrian cooking was delicious and his personality and love for entertaining made it one of the best nights of our trip. We hope to stay with Clive and Kathryn again sometime as we fell in love with Scalea and Casa Cielo.
Scaleas historic center is a dreamland and I am sure, that we made hundreds of fotos. It´s a bit like another world... Clive and Cathrine were very nice and helpful. Clive is also an amazing cook. We had a great dinner and their b&b! In the apartment you have enough place and a lovely kitchen. Thanks for a nice stay!
Thank you to Clive and Kathryn for being great hosts. Clive gave us advice on good places to explore and helped us with directions as well. The trips to Padula and the waterfalls were wonderful.
The setting of Casa Cielo in that ancient section of Scalea, and the wonderful views from the snow capped peaks to the ocean were perfect. The contrast between the medieval steps and lanes and the clean modern interior was spectacular. Loved the Nativity Scene in the atrium!
Clive's breakfasts and dinner were satisfying and delicious.
Highly recommended. Clive and Kathryn are such nice and generous hosts (plus Clive is an amazing cook) and the room was nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. The house itself is in the old town of Scalea, which is very quiet and beautiful, but is still only five minutes' walk from the beach. Everything was perfect, thank you!
This is a gem! Comfortable bedroom with ensuite toilet and basin, as welll as our own lounge - with shower! Beautifully restored very old house, well appointed, very clean and decorated with Clive’s artworks and murals. Access to balcony and huge roof terrace with extensive views. Located halfway up Centro Storico, pedestrian access only (but Clive helped with bags), good free parking nearby and very manageable number of steps. Great location for exploring the old town; Clive gave us a private tour and piloted us in and out as well.
Opted to have dinner with Clive and Kathryn – an absolutely wonderful meal cooked by Clive, while Kathryn was the perfect hostess, all topped off with homemade Limoncello which was delicious. Breakfast was a real treat; again a meal prepared by Clive, and by far the best we had in 8 weeks of travelling – really something special.
Strictly no smoking on the premises including roof terrace.
Fantastic accomodation and Location! Would recommend this to anyone in for some exploring or just a relaxing time. Clive and Katherine were incredible hosts and we would definitely stay again, and again.
