The Space

Colorful guest room in lush and peaceful garden setting with private patio. We are in walking distance from 32 wine tasting rooms & 3 vineyards (many more if you really like walking). This area is known for food, wine, cycling, & hiking. Ken is well-versed in local wines so he can point you in the right direction if you wish. This whole area is incredibly quiet at night, often with a brilliant cover of stars. The house itself is family-style: comfortable, colorful, and clean. The bathroom (rarely shared, but sometimes) is near your room, made of hand-made Mexican tiles. This is a safe area where people are neighborly. Local streets are country lanes with apple orchards open during the season, produce sold road-side, and horses, cows, llamas and mini-ponies make up the local livestock. There's often live music in and around town during weekends. There's a cozy overflow room available for additional family members, by request, for a separate charge. There are 3 good restaurants & a coffee shop in walking distance from the house. Massage and/or bike rentals may be scheduled in advance. Bring walking shoes and warm clothes as evenings tend to be cool. Both the house and the community are easy places to kick back and unplug.

Guest Access

Private patio, secure bike storage, off-street parking, refrigerator space, filtered water.

Interaction with Guests

It's easy to set up arrival times and socializing varies depending on your situation at the moment and/or ours. Both Ken and I like people and enjoy sharing conversation over a glass of wine or cup of tea, and lots of really nice moments grow out of that. But sometimes it's just a quiet night for any number of reasons, and we all occupy the house doing our own thing, and that is fine too. Just kinda works out.

The Neighborhood

Clean, uncrowded, safe, nature all around, quiet, and plenty of fabulous wine and food.

Getting around

Walk to Los Olivos in 7 minutes. Verizon is only reliable cell service in the Valley so you might want to look at the map b4 you come up the mountain.

Other Things to Note

We like to provide a light breakfast, but it's not always possible during the week due to our work schedules. However, there is always coffee and tea, so don't panic. Clean linens, robes, filtered water, and hair dryer provided.

  • Diane is a beautiful spirit; intelligent, generous, helpful and encouraging. Something about her picture told me immediately that I wanted to stay in her home and I was not disappointed. Ken is welcoming, generous, a true gentleman and warm conversationalist. The home is beautiful and perfectly located on the edge of Los Olivos. The front and back gardens are lush and replete. The bed is very cozy. The attention to detail in the accommodations made me feel so very cared for. I felt entirely at home while on vacation. I am definitely going back!

  • Beautifully decorated space located 5-10 min walk to center of Los Olivos. Diane and Ken were both great hosts and very friendly. The welcome snacks and breakfast was definitely a nice bonus! Even though we are staying in their home it was peaceful and quiet, which is exactly what we need for a wine country getaway!

  • Cozy room, beautiful and unique art, and a very nice patio -- all these things added to the getaway we were looking for. The coffee/tea/snacks in our room and comfortable robes were also a really nice touch. We didn't get to meet Diane, but her husband Ken was pleasant and welcoming.

  • We had a fabulous stay at Diane and Ken's beautiful house in Los Olivos. Every detail was thought of, from bathrobes and filtered water to fresh coffee and tea and a delicious breakfast in the morning. The house is in a perfect location for walking or biking to vineyards and tasting rooms. We got great tips from Ken on places to go, and everything was accessible by bike. We enjoyed chatting with Diane and Ken and seeing the beautiful artwork that decorates their house. They are an artistically talented family! Highly recommend, and hope to visit them again.

  • Diane made us feel very at home during our stay and she had everything covered. She is very knowledgeable about the area and was very helpful In giving us the information we needed. Although our stay was short I would come back and stay again next time.

  • Garden Retreat is a perfect description of Diane and Ken's lovely home and setting. The area is peaceful and pastoral....with a charming, small village nearby.
We were greeted warmly, served a delicious wine and felt completely at home, coming and going as we pleased. They deserve the 5 star rating in every area...we would happily book there again.

  • Ok, this was our fourth time back. Normally we don't go back to the same place like this but Diane and Ken's home is like a really good chicken restaurant that you can't quite get out of your head because they do the chicken just so... And it's just perfect.

Anyways, this time we parked the car for 24 hrs, walked into town several times, broke our diet with two fabulously delicious meals, tasted and bought fantastic wines, and had an amazing walk thru the canyons that feeds your soul.

Every time we are there we find something new. Their place is comfortable and you don't exactly need to plan what to do you just need to plan on slowing down. Do that and you will meet winemakers, a variety of trees and birds, and really cool people who care about food and community. Plus, it's always a good laugh to see that they have more benches per capita than anywhere else in California.

We will be back during full strawberry season I think and can't imagine staying anywhere else. We highly recommend staying there and make sure you ask for advice on where to go.

I don't think it's possible to get a better review. Thank you. So sweet. OK, I need the name of your airbnb place in London. I'm getting serious this weekend about making these bookings. Time to get this party started!! Hope your beautiful tunics remind you of good times. ( I'm going to head over there and check them out myself. I love gorgeous textiles and flowy blouses.)

  • It's been a wonderful stay at Diane's and Ken's place. The location is just beautiful, and the pictures mirror pretty well how everything looks like. The breakfast was very good and caringly prepared, and both Diane and especially Ken gave lots of tips what to do and where to go. Thanks a lot, also for the wine tasting!

  • Loved staying with Diane and Ken. The room was very clean and cozy. Diane and Ken's place was a wonderful break from the chaos of Los Angeles. The bed was very comfortable and the location was perfect. We also really enjoyed talking with Diane and Ken and learning a little bit about their life stories. It was a great weekend!

  • What a wonderfully, relaxing weekend! Diane and Ken could not have been more gracious and hospitable. We were warmly greeted and given all kinds of suggestions as to how to spend our day. Their house is walking distance to downtown Los Olivos, where there are tons of wine tasting rooms and vineyards. We had such a lovely day strolling the streets, drinking wine and eating a fabulous dinner.

Our room was down a private hallway and very neat and clean. The bedroom opened to the garden through french doors, so we had the entire garden to ourselves to enjoy our wine. We awoke to the faint chirping of birds and fresh mountain air - it was magical! We will definitely be back and cannot wait for our stay in the future!

About
Ken and I have created a home that is a reflection of our shared interest in nature, travel, and the arts. We've lived in LO for many years, raised our now-adult-children here, and currently share our home with a beloved house-mate who, like Ken, is an ardent naturalist. We don't subscribe to tv, but we watch The Daily Show and Colbert regularly and are currently watching Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones. We're classic NPR fans...everything from Car Talk to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and all the news and music in between. We both read a lot, and magazines these days are The New Yorker, Nature, Scientific American, National Geographic, The Funny Times, and occasionally The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, and The Economist. We subscribe to The Wall Street Journal because we still like the feeling of a newspaper. I read People whenever I get my haircut ( but don't tell anyone). I think our home also reflects our way of living/travelling; it's relaxed, but runs pretty well...comfortable, but not posh. We love to hang out with friends and family, especially outdoors in the warmer weather, sharing a good meal and bottle of wine. Hiking is our favorite getaway, Mount Gay Rum our vice of choice, and Ken's really into frogs and I'm into linens. Somehow, it all works. Our life motto, as it appears on my license plate, is: ITLBFYN.
