The Space

Our guest house is a two bedroom, roomy fully air conditioned home and sits in the heart of the historic Sam Hughes Neighborhood just 1 block from the U of A. Our guest house has high vaulted ceilings, unique and comfortable furnishings and is able to accommodate 4 adults or a family quite nicely. I can place a small pak & play in a bedroom for a fifth person, but 5 normal size people doesn't work unless you really want to be close. We have a secured gated courtyard for bike storage, two parking spaces, full size kitchen with all needed appliances including microwave, plate settings, pots/pans and coffee maker. The living space has bar seating, a flat screen tv/dvd player, Cox Cable, WiFi , ceiling fans and a love seat and two chairs. We have provided a washer and dryer for your convenience and the courtyard features a patio grill for sunset BBQ's. One bedroom is furnished with two comfy twin beds, luxury sheets and plenty of closet space. The tastefully decorated second bedroom has a brand new beauty rest king bed with luxury bedding and a large closet. The full size bathroom has both a shower and tub for your convenience along with luxurious towels and hand-made soaps to make your stay extra special! The U of A is just one block away, with the University Medical Center across the street. A Whole foods Market and a Safeway are within a mile, along with Reid Park (Tucson's largest park with two 18-hole public golf courses, Reid Park Zoo, Randolph Tennis Complex, Aquatic Center, and a 6 mile tree lined bike/walking path). We sit 3 blocks from the lush and very active Himmel Park and just a short walk to our favorite local Rincon Market/Deli and Bob Dobb's Pub on game days. The bus route is 1 block from our door at Speedway and Campbell and an easy route to the vintage and unique shops of Fourth Ave., University Ave., museums, wonderful eateries, theaters and more. I can assist you with any directions and reservations if needed. Please understand that weekly and monthly pricing is for all months except the Gem Show Jan. 19 thru Feb. 18. This rate is $850 for a week and $3000 for the 31 days, which is about $95 a night for a two bedroom house/peak time. The nightly rate is $150 during Gem Show. Since the heat rises in AZ during summer months, we drop the price during June-Aug. months to $100 a night. I look forward to hosting you.

Guest Access

Whole house.

Interaction with Guests

I like to check in my guest and give them a quick tour & layout of the house. Answer any questions about restaurants , markets & neighborhood. I'll touch base by txt within a day or two, mostly make myself available if questions, but guest privacy is very important to me. I want my guest to feel at home in my home.

The Neighborhood

This is a historical neighborhood that most homes were built in the 1920s. Very bike friendly, walking tree lined streets & across the street from the U of A.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Desert Poppy Guest House! The Guest House is in a great location close to the U of A. The Guest house had tons of amenities including a wonderful patio and grill. Nancy was an incredible host from the handmade soaps to the welcome basket with homemade cinnamon bread and fresh fruit. It was everything and more which helped to make our stay so enjoyable!

  • The Desert Poppy Guest house located in the heart of Tuscon next to the University of Arizona. Its 5 minutes drive to the major downtown actions and everything we planed to do.

Nancy is an amazing host. The air conditioned house is very comfortable even tho it was 109 degrees outside in Tuscon. The house is beautifully decorated, all the sheets and towels are washed and clean. I feel like staying in a 5 star hotel.

WIFI password is printed out in a piece of paper among with other "fun things to do" guides around the town which are also prepared by the host. Nancy is also a soap maker, the home-made soaps we used are definitely one of a kind!

We've been with some good airbnb host along our trip, but Nancy was impressive and memorable. I will definitely go back to the Desert Poppy guest house if I ever need to go back to Tuscon.

P.S. Nancy also prepare a dish of delicious brownie for us, how NICE!. I guess its not for everyone and we are the lucky ones.

  • The Desert Poppy Guest House was excellent! Location was perfect to easily attend activities on campus for our son's graduation. The apartment was well appointed - nice living room to relax and visit, cute patio and entry way, comfortable bedrooms, and everything necessary in the kitchen. Even a wine selection available! Nancy was very helpful leading up to the visit and her husband and assistant we completely available and responsive while we were in town. Would definitely stay again when visiting Tucson.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Desert Poppy Guesthouse! It was incredibly comfortable and pleasant, and Nancy was a great host - very helpful and friendly. The welcome basket with homemade rhubarb bread and fruit, and the homemade soaps were nice extra touches. The beds and linens were very comfortable and the house was clean and cozy. The location is great, and in easy walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores, the park, and more. We'd definitely stay again!

  • My college bound daughter, her friend and I spent a wonderful night recently at Nancy's Desert Poppy Guest House while touring the campus. Nancy was very flexible, easy to communicate with and friendly. She went the extra mile to make the rental reservation work with our flight times. The quaint and clean guest house is centrally located to the university. Upon entering the cozy family room, you will notice the Keurig coffee machine/k-cups and a welcoming basket of fruit and various snacks. The bedrooms are serene and beds are comfortable. Nancy also provides wonderful soaps which she makes herself! This was the perfect place for us and we look forward to many more such visits here during parent weekends!! Thank you for a great stay, Nancy!

  • If you find yourself in Tucson, you should definitely stay here -- One of the cutest airbnb places I've ever stayed. Nancy was great and accommodating when we arrived later than anticipated. And there was fruit and homemade (and delicious) pumpkin spice bread waiting for us. The beds were super comfortable with the softest sheets I've slept in maybe ever. I had my 16 month old and mom with me and my daughter loved hanging out outside and toddling around discovering things inside was also pretty safe for not being baby-proofed (which of course I did not expect!). She especially loved the giraffe statue, which she called "dog" the whole weekend. Seriously, stay here!

  • Altho I'm known for having the "gift of gab", I'm almost (but not quite!) at a loss to describe the marvelous month my wife Linda and I spent in the Desert Poppy guesthouse. It is clean, comfortable, cozy, convenient and completely furnished with everything needed for a pleasurable visit. We enjoyed staying there immensely. We spent relaxing moments under the stars on the cozy back patio, watching the birds at the feeder or having lunch with friends. And the bed is so comfortable we were wishing we could take it with us back to Maine.
But as wonderful as the Desert Poppy is, it's glories are completely outdone by the loving care given to us by our host, Nancy Avery, and her husband Chris. Not only were we treated like royalty but we made new friends to enjoy for years to come.
To anyone reading this review I say - reserve today, don't delay. You surely will not regret your choice.

  • Nancy was a wonderful host! She agreed to an early check-in, which really helped. The guest house was cute, clean, and even had some fresh-baked banana bread! There is a private patio and a couple of bikes for guests--perfect, because the neighborhood that Nancy lives in is very bike-able. You can easily get to campus and downtown.

Hi, My name is Nancy Avery and I have lived and worked in the old Pueblo for more that twenty years. My husband Chris and I are raising two awesome children, one 21 & one 18, a golden retriever and any starving college student that ends up at the dinner table. We are avid hikers, trail runners and river runners. I just retired after 20 years from the Tucson Fire Department as a first responder captain on Engine 13 and loved the opportunity to serve my community. A life of service has always been my passion and I look forward to meeting you, taking care of you and your family and hope that you will thoroughly enjoy our beautiful Desert Poppy Inn/Guest house. It's a place I would like you to call home while you are exploring, racing, running or hiking through our great city. Email me if you have any questions.
