Where you’ll be

Athina, Greece

The apartment is beside of The National Theatre of Greece and St Constantin church, two blocks from Omonia Square. The exact location is the center of Athens, and is composed of the actual square together with the surrounding streets, open areas and assemblage of grand buildings that include banks and offices.
The neighboring area of Exarcheia (Εξάρχεια) to the north, dominated by the Athens Polytechnic and its famous band of anarchists, is a bohemian district with lots of bars and clubs visited by students, intellectuals and people who are into alternative culture.
Omonoia is the exact opposite of its neighbors Plaka & Monastiraki as there is no classical attraction in this multi-cultural area, however it's where you go for cheap eateries, exotic imported goods and food and basically day-to-day items at affordable price.
The other neighboring area is the neighborhood of Psyrri is arty and bohemian, with old and new points of interest side by side. Old fashioned artisans workshops, hidden alleys, counter culture and alternative spaces, street art, popular bars and traditional restaurants, coexist in harmony, creating a fascinating atmosphere full of surprises. The young crowd love it and keep the nightlife busy. The main attraction in Psyrri is the Kerameikos ancient cemetery, which includes part of the Themistoclean Wall and the Sacred Gate. The Museum of Islamic Art and the Pottery Museum on Melidoni street are very interesting to visit. The Armenian church and the Synagogue are also located in this district.
At the end of the park lies Gazi, easily recognizable by the chimneys of the former Athens Gasworks, today the Technopolis Art Center.Gazi, probably the most distinct part of Athens, is where the meaning of a great night out is being redefined. Hundreds of people – Athenians and visitors to the Greek capital – bump shoulders in its narrow streets. You’ll have endless choices while strolling around its alleys: a new bar to have a fancy cocktail, a trendy place to dine; or a packed place to dance. The diversity – in music, types of people and varieties of food – is all part of Gazi’s energy, which is hard to beat.
“Technopolis City of Athens” is what Athens Gasworks has become, another focal point in the cultural identity of the capital.
A wide variety of cultural events are held in Technopolis every year: music, dance, and theatre festivals, performing arts, plastic and applied arts, educational programs for children, conferences for entrepreneurs, plus temporary exhibitions, all of which attract over 600,000 people annually. Luckily, Technopolis City of Athens has its own website!
With Athens suddenly becoming a popular tourist destination once again and the most central hotels filling up, more and more people are discovering that their choices of where to stay downtown are limited to areas that in the past they were discouraged from staying at. Omonoia is one of those areas. It is true that the area is not promoted, but big hotels are here and it is a place you would like, especially if you are a young artist who is attracted to areas that are 'up and coming' even if you don't know how far down was and how long it takes to get to up from there. The area has been cleaned up a lot in recent years and even if there are small streets that you should avoid late at night you can say that about any city and even other parts of Athens. These same streets are perfectly safe in the daytime. In fact the whole area has become an area of artists and young visionaries who have taken advantage of the low rents and abandoned buildings to open art galleries, restaurants, cafes, and gardens in some of the empty lots. And much of the neighborhood is just your every day Athens working class area of apartment buildings and the types of shops and businesses you would find
