Book your stay at our 150-year-old renovated Acadian Cape Cod-style cottage on the sea! Breathe the fresh air, enjoy the sounds and sights of the soaring hawks and bald Eagles, launch your kayak from the cottage's yard and paddle the pristine inlets and harbours of Isle Madame!

Our three-bedroom, two-floor cottage features a complete renovation, including new mattresses, bedding and towels. It's our home away from our very busy lives and we want to share it with those looking to recharge.

The space
Note: NO CLEANING FEE FOR 7+ night stays. Stays shorter than 7 nights available, though a $65 cleaning fee applies. Every booking will be charged a $65 cleaning fee (built into the price you see), however the $65 fee is refunded by the host (through Airbnb) for stays of 7+ nights. A BBQ is available, on request.

Guest access
Access to the entire home, except three owners closets where we store our kid’s toys and summer clothes.

Other things to note
Note: Cleaning fee waived for 7 nights+.

*Dining room table is now different than one in photos.

We designed our cottage to have the amenities of home. In addition to a stocked kitchen (dishes, glasses, mugs, wine glasses, cutlery, pots and pans, wine bottle opener, etc.), you'll find a dishwasher, full-size microwave, Tassimo coffee machine (bring your favourite coffee pods), coffee maker, toaster, kettle and hand mixer. A full size washer and dryer are also available to use. We also have a fire pit (fire wood can be purchased at the Co-op in Arichat), large size campfire chairs, marshmallow sticks (in the wardrobe in the mudroom) and a BBQ available (on request only).

Since we do not have a cleaning fee for stays of 7+ nights, please be respectful of the space and leave it clean and tidy when you end your visit.

We have a heat pump on the main floor of the cottage (you'll find a remote control on the wall nearby); it provides air conditioning to fully cool down the main floor of the cottage as well as heat for chilly nights. All three bedrooms have ceiling fans. Please be sure to close all windows when you go out for the day and/or end your visit, as unexpected rain showers can surprise even us, the owners, when we're visiting our cottage.

A stay at Sunset Harbour includes Wifi as well as a flat-screen SmartTV that features a Netflix button. To use Netflix you'll need to turn on the TV, push the Netflix button and enter your own account info. Please be sure to log out of your account at the end of your stay. For those who want low-tech entertainment, we have a selection of board games including Jenga, Battle Ship and Monopoly (in the blue trunk/coffee table near the sofa).

We purchased the cottage in 2016 when we started full renovations (kitchen, floors, electrical, plumbing, doors, roof, water heater). We also purchased all-new mattresses and box springs, linens, towels, hypoallergenic duvets and white covers that we wash after every visit to Sunset Harbour. The open-concept main floor and second level are painted to reflect life near the sea. Muted grey, white, dark blue, aqua and soft green carry a nautical theme throughout the cottage. As well as Annie Sloane chalk painted furniture ... one of my favourite hobbies.

Our cottage is about 150 years old and has been moved at least three times (a few of those moves have included floating on barrels across the harbours of Isle Madame). While it's completely renovated, it has the *charm* of crooked walls, floors and lower ceilings. We appreciate these imperfections, and hope you will, too.

We hope you enjoy your stay on beautiful Isle Madame. Please let us know if you can suggest any amenities that are missing from our home for your next stay.

West Arichat, Nova Scotia, Canada

Isle Madame is a 45 km-square island, a pristine island within the island of Cape Breton. It is where you visit to rest and recharge, to walk kilometres of unspoiled shoreline and find sand dollars at Pondville Beach. At the end of the day, delight in the beautiful glowing pink sunsets that make the sky come alive. Originally a French settlement, most of Isle Madame's locals speak Acadian French. Francophone visitors are welcome throughout the island.

Some of our favourite places to visit on Isle Madame

Pebble and Fern Market Garden (the girls with the garden); open daily from 12-5 p.m.

The White Turtle (handcrafted pottery; the homeowners are 100% off the grid); open Saturday and Sunday only from 1-5 p.m.

La Goélette à Pépé Café (Francophone friendly)
Enjoy a brewed coffee, tea or specialty iced coffee or Cappuccino in this sweet cafe -- or to go. Also enjoy a pastry made in house by the pastry chef! Breakfast sandwiches and lunch specials available daily. This cafe also doubles as local artisan craft shop with pottery by Vicky, who works out of the shop in the same building. http://www.lagoeletteapepe.ca/

Corner Bridge Store and Bakery
If you're planning a visit to Pebble and Fern (or even if you're not!), take a drive to the Corner Bridge. Baked goods are made on-site (we always buy whole wheat bread, Tweed squares, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and "choo choos" -- a chocolate coconut cookie). You can also pick up Corner Bridge baked goods at the Co-op store in Arichat.

Kenny's Pizza (Arichat location)
Don't feel like cooking tonight? Order a pizza for pickup from Kenny's in Arichat.
We enjoy east coast favourites including the donair pizza and garlic fingers.

The convenience store at Kenny’s also sells live lobster when in season (currently at $7.50/lb; August 2020).
