My beach house is located in a semi-secluded area in a forest setting with other beach homes. The surroundings are completely natural, with trees providing shade and homes for all kinds of tropical life, including endless varieties of birds and the local Howler monkeys.
Buy your food in San Juan del Sur at the central market. You’ll find fresh produce, and a small convenience store with a great variety of imported goods and a selection of meats.
If you’re looking for fish, the local fisherman’s co-op in San Juan is a short walk down the waterfront in a small wooden building where a wide variety of fish come in every afternoon. And don’t forget your speargun or fishing pole, the water outside the house is clear and full of fish.
Once you arrive at my house, there is a small shop nearby that stocks some basic supplies and every other day a produce truck comes to the house with fresh fruits and vegetables.
A one kilometer walk down the beach you will find a group of four bars and restaurants right on the sand serving everything from fish tacos to wood fired pizzas in a brick oven. San Juan del Sur is only 20 mintutes away, and in between there are even more restaurants to choose from.
There are many great places to hike, both to other beaches and in the forest for bird and animal watching.
You can rent surfboards and take lessons at the end of the beach at the restaurants.
There is great fishing from the point at the end of the beach, and you can also arrange fishing, diving, surfing, snorkeling, and other tours from San Juan del Sur.
Guests will be welcome to the entire house, and will have complete privacy.
Our caretaker lives nearby and will meet you with your key. He will be available to help with anything you need.
To arrive at the house from San Juan del Sur:
Rent a Vehicle:
- 4 wheel drive is very preferable in the rainy season.
- Take a taxi from San Juan del Sur to Matilda’s Hostel on Playa Majagual, our house is the one with a green roof just before the two story white house. Taxis should cost about $20usd
- From San Juan Del Sur, take a surf shuttle to Maderas Beach, these leave three or four times per day from the various surf shops in town and cost about $5usd, try Casa De Oro.
When you arrive at Maderas beach, you will be at the south end, walk about one kilometer down the beach to the other end. The last building there is Matilda Hostel, walk just past it on the road, turn right and Our house has a green roof, just past the two story white building.
- No smoking inside the house. Outside is fine.
Daniel was a very responsive host. The location of the house is great but this is no luxury vacation rental. It's a bit rustic and we lost power and/or water for at least a few hours most days. You'll also want to keep an eye on your belongings at all times and maybe consider travel insurance if you have anything of value with you.
All that said, we had a great week. The beach in front of the house is beautiful and very quiet. Marsella beach is a 10 min walk and has fun beach bars/restaurants with good food and cheap drinks.
We rented a car (didn't need an SUV in dry season) which was great for getting groceries and checking out town. Our typical days included breakfast at the house, some time on Maderas beach, and afternoons renting surf boards ($10) and getting surf lessons ($15) at Marsella beach. We grilled at the house for lunch or dinner and ate the other meal at one of the restaurants on Marsella.
Really relaxing trip! We had one major issue but hopefully it was a onetime thing, that is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars.
We were delighted with the accommodation. Apart from being much nicer inside than the pictures, it has 3 decent size rooms and TWO bathrooms, AND an outside shower. It feels very homely. We had such a relaxing time, hanging out in the hammocks. We were greeted by the monkeys in the tamarind trees. The beds are very comfortable. The two beaches are fabulous, particularly the one which is SLIGHTLY further away 3 minutes instead of 2!). It feels like a friendly little neighbourhood. We enjoyed the body boards that were there. The kitchen equipment is basic but very functional and there is a proper oven inside so we were able to have a roast chicken on christmas day! Thank you Daniel for a wonderful time.
Daniel's house in Majagual is AWESOME! 5 of us rented the house for a week and it was great: 1 minute walk to an almost private beach, 3 min to majagual beach & 10-15 over the rocks the surf beach of Maderas (some restaurants, rent boards etc). The house is pretty simple, but totally comfortable & clean with a well stocked kitchen. Aside from the beach, the next best thing is the huge outdoor porch with hammocks etc. we spent most of our time in the house there chilling out with Chispa, the awesomest neighborhood dog.
The caretakers n folks were super helpful, the little neighborhood is super cute & the beach is awesome. But just a note, it's a bit secluded up there (no ATMs / grocery stores) - we rented a car so we could get around in SJDS & that's helpful for beach trips, groceries, dinner son town etc (fyi bumpy ride to/fro!) You can take shuttles from Maderas, they run during the day, but just know they stop running late afternoon, so if you're in town you'll have to cab it ($15/20) or ahem, hitch. San Juan is a chill little beach town but if you're looking for a beautiful beach trip with some good surf its so worth it to stay at Daniels house! I liked it so much I stayed and extra 9 days, just moved to the hostel next door!
We had an amazing stay! This lovely little house is perfectly located on the beautiful Majagual beach. The house is fully furnished, we had everything we needed! Thanks a lot Daniel! Hope to come back next year!
Fabulous place, great location! Daniel was awesome to work with! Surf is close and the beaches surrounding the house are amazing!! Thanks Daniel - we look forward to our next stay with you! Cheers!
Where do I begin? We had such an amazing time staying at Daniel's house. Daniel did a wonderful job providing us with helpful information prior to our arrival. The house comfortably accommodated all of the guests and was absolutely wonderful. The location was perfect, great beaches and amazing views. We could not have asked for better caretakers (Gerardo, Lupita, and their son Jose Andres). Gerardo and his family were extremely kind and helpful. We were so sad to leave but hope to visit again soon. Once again I cannot stress how amazing our time at Daniel's house was and I would strongly recommend staying there. Until next time. Gracias!

About the Host, Daniel
I am a Nicaraguan American, and have lived in Nicaragua for most of my life. I have lived in various parts of the world, including different countries in South America and the Middle East.
I enjoy surfing and hanging out with people from all over the world. Traveling gives me inspiration and insight into all the wonderful ways of living life. To me, traveling is one of the those marvelous gifts that allows you to see that your way of life is not necessarily the best, or the only way of living right.
I like to think that I am an easy-going and calm person that does his best to help out in any situation. I love to cook and read as well as take naps in hammocks.
