About this listing

3,000 feet above Kingston, Tree Tops Cottage sits on a working coffee farm and overlooks Jamaica's capital and the surrounding Blue Mountains.

Wind chimes on the veranda invite you to the view. This place is no stranger to relaxation. Tomorrow may bring a hike up into the hills to a fresh water spring, a doctor-bird, or an elusive mongoose. Or it may bring more of the same; a book in your new favorite chair, a good cup of coffee, and peace.

The space

Tree Tops is a family-owned guest cottage that easily sleeps four. There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. The house belongs to an artist and touches of island elegance are everywhere. The house is in the trees and there are quite a few stairs to climb from the driveway to get to the veranda.

Basic food amenities will be provided but you will need to bring all the necessary food and drink if you want to prepare your meals. The tap water is spring water so it is very safe to drink.

If you are staying for more than 4 nights, we can arrange for a second round of groceries to be brought up.

EITS Café and Restaurant is nearby for those who would like to eat out and mingle with other travelers from all corners of the world.

Guest access

Guests will have access to most of the property and a guided tour of the coffee farm can be arranged.

Interaction with guests

Upon our arrival you will be greeted by Hugo who lives below the property.
He has worked with the family and on the coffee farm for nearly thirty years.

Other things to note

Tours of the Blue Mountains and information on other areas/villas or cottages across the island can be made available to guests upon request.

Car services from both airports can be arranged.

**Please note that EITS' last seating is at 6pm.

We arrived at Tree Tops the first week in July after driving a 1000 meters up a mountain road in various stages of disrepair (route B1 is slowly being resurfaced). A 4-wheel drive SUV is not a requirement as you will see the locals driving all manner of vehicles, but we were glad to have rented one (many, many large potholes). Prior to driving up from Kingston we stopped at a supermarket recommended by Susan (thanks for the directions!). This is HIGHLY recommended as the only place to purchase food on the mountain is at tiny roadside shops. Once you arrive at Susan’s guest house you may be tempted to spend your entire time there. The setting is spectacular and the verandah views of the surrounding mountains and the city below are breathtaking both day and night. Yoga and meditation on the veranda in the morning was complemented by the rich sounds of mountain life and an abundance of hummingbirds to help welcome in each new day. Despite being summer, the island breeze and the altitude combine for perfect sleeping conditions (best to keep lights to a minimum at night to avoid attracting moths). Saw a few mosquitos but were not a bother. Tree tops is well stocked with everything you need including a full kitchen. The supplied Blue Mountain coffee was great along with the bananas and mangos. The Internet can be intermittent in the mountains but Hugo and Cecil quickly resolved outages and I could connect with the office back in the US. The T-Mobile international cell phone service we are subscribed to worked well although tethering did not work. At least one meal at the nearby EITS restaurant is a must (they close at 6:00 PM). You will be treated to locally sourced meals in an amazing setting. You might want to wonder the property before you sit down for a meal as there are many different seatings with fabulous views. Also, don’t miss the chance to visit the road-level unisex bathroom—a unique mountain experience! Robyn, the EITS proprietor, not only gave us directions to Tree Tops when we first arrived, but offered to arrange for a visit to a coffee farm 25 minutes up the road where we were treated to the best cup of coffee we have ever had (Peabody), along with stimulating conversation on all manner of topics with the owner (David). He allowed us to get lost on his property and later watched him roast several batches of Peabody (yum). We also came to the Blue Mountains to hike, but getting to most locations proved challenging. The only well maintained trails are a 40-minute drive further up B1 at Holywell National Park (don’t freak out when you drive thru the military parade grounds where you may find young recruits learning how to march—it is actually part of B1). The famous Blue Mountains Peak hike was far away, absolutely requiring a 4-wheel drive (with a low gear setting). The hike is best experienced by...

Susan's guest house is perched in the midst of a scenic coffee plantation on the slopes of the Blue Mountains. It's close to scenic hikes at Holywell and good restaurants on the picturesque mountain road coming out of Kingston. We had many plans but were so taken by the comfort and serenity of sitting on the verandah that we spent most of the stay reading, relaxing, dining, and watching the twinkling night lights of Kingston well in the distance below. We couldn't have loved our stay more and felt better taken care of by Susan, Hugo, and her staff. Warmly and very highly recommend this property.
