About This Listing
Saint Hippolyte-du-Fort lies at the foothills of the Cévennes at a crossroad between the hills and the (website hidden)'s an ideal location for anyone who loves walking or biking in magnificent, un-spoilt landscapes.
Our self-contained guest wing makes an ideal base for visiting and enjoying the local area. Although the house itself is situated in the heart of the village, the flat is very quiet and peaceful, overlooking the walled garden with the hills beyond. All the shops, as well as the twice weekly market, are within easy walking distance.
The garden is very peaceful and never shared with more than two other guests. There is plenty of space for everyone to be as private as they may wish, to relax or have meals.
Interaction with Guests
My idea is to leave guests in peace as much as possible . However, I do come to water and maintain the garden nearly every day and I'm always available to give help or make suggestions about where to go and what to see.
This is a magnificent part of France with huge expanses of very varied, completely un-spoilt landscapes. There are also many places of interest to visit such as the nearby medieval town of Sauve or Anduze with its famous bamboo plantation and traditional pottery. Further afield, there are well visited towns such as Uzès, St. Guilhem-le-Désert or Sommières but there are also many beautiful villages that are more off the beaten track. In the heat of the summer there are plenty of places to swim ... the sea and sandy beaches are just over an hour away while closer to hand, there are rivers and pools and quiet places for picnics. If it gets too hot, you can always go up towards the Mont Aigoual where the air is cooler and the views are spectacular!
If you are coming from England, you can come by train to Nîmes and then catch a bus to Saint Hippolyte (1.50 euros !) Otherwise, you can fly to either Nîmes (Ryanair) or to Montpellier (Easyjet). Both airports are about an hour away by car.
Once you are here, you can also hire a car through the local supermarket .... for a small car, it costs 22 euros per day plus petrol.
Teresa's cosy apartment was the perfect base for a couple of days relaxing and enjoying this stunning and unspoiled pocket of southern France. The Cervennes are spectacular and the towns to the east - like Sauve and Uzes - are breathtaking. Teresa was the perfect host.... Welcoming, yet unobtrusive; great communicator; helpful; thoughtful. The property was well appointed, had everything we needed and the garden was a hidden gem, barely 20yds from the gentle hustle of an authentic town square.
We loved our stay at Teresa's apartment! A clean & cosy place at the foot of the Cevennes, with a beautiful and quiet garden. Teresa was very helpful with advice on some off-the-beaten-track sights of the region. She also provided some maps and brochures which came in handy, and there was some food in the fridge so we didn't have to run to the shops immediately. A perfect AirBnB experience!
The appartement was perfect: comfortable, clean and very stylish. All basic things were available and much more. Lots of tourist information etc. Teresa is a very nice host who makes you feel welcome and at home. We would recommend this gateway to anyone who wants to explore this area!
About the Host, Teresa
I'm English but have lived in France since the 1970's ..... for the first 16 years I was in Paris, but now live with my family in the Cévennes, a poor but very beautiful part of France. One of the things I most love about it, is being able to walk out into the hills and not see a soul all day .... to the south you can see the sea and to the north, the hills roll all the way to the Mont Lozère.
