About This Listing
Rent out a guest bedroom in a beautiful, serene, historic home, located only three blocks from Duke's campus and within easy walking distance to stores and restaurants!
Rent a bedroom in a beautiful 1926 craftsman style home that is only three blocks from Duke's East Campus, as well as a short walk to Durham's 9th Street area, which offers many restaurants and shops to entertain while visiting Durham.
Go to the farmer's market and use the kitchen to make a delicious dinner at home, hang out and read a book or just use our home as a base for exploring the area or visiting Duke (and the gorgeous Sarah Duke Gardens!). You will love it here- Durham is fantastic!
The bedroom itself has everything you need to make yourself at home: a super comfortable bed with organic cotton bedding, extra blankets, an ceiling fan, a large desk, books to read, a place to hang your clothes, and even a piano, if you are so inclined to want to play.
The bathroom has a full shower/bathtub, and always has fresh towels for your use, as well as the basics you might need during your stay: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a hair dryer.
And of course, we have wifi throughout the house.
You will have a bedroom to yourself, as well as easy access to a bathroom (that has the washer/dryer in it). And you are of course more than welcome to hang out and use any of the shared living spaces: the living room, dining room, and kitchen.
The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans and everything you could need to cook a nice meal or just enjoy a simple breakfast, and we try to keep an empty shelf in the fridge for you so that you will have space to store anything you need to in there. (We just ask that you clean up after yourself if you cook or eat here).
A large porch in the front encourages lounging and the back yard is always available to relax in or play a round of croquet. Street parking is always available and there is no time restriction to parking there.
You will be sharing the house with us: two busy academics (Jeff and Sara) and our cat (Luna), who likes to keep to herself, so you probably won't even know she is around. (She never goes into the guest bedroom to minimize problems if people have allergies). We sometimes work from home, and at other times are barely ever around due to our work schedules- it just really depends. But if we are around, we are happy to chat and give advice on what to see and do in Durham!
Our home is in a super convenient and historical part of town: we are only a few blocks from Duke, a few from 9th St, and a longer walk or short bike ride from the revitalizing downtown and Main St.
There is also a Whole Foods within walking distance for any groceries you might need. They also offer an amazing breakfast/lunch/dinner buffet for a quick meal. If Whole Foods isn't your thing, there is also a Harris Teeter a block further down the street.
There are several great places to have breakfast or brunch only a few blocks away (including Hummingbird Bakery that has a great breakfast burrito and Watts Grocery, that has a great weekend brunch), Monuts (amazing donuts!) and also several lunch and dinner options within a 10 minute walk, ranging from super low-key (Chubby's Tacos for instance) to high-brow (Vin Rouge).
A bit of a longer walk (or short bike ride) brings you downtown and to the Brightleaf area, which has some of the most amazing restaurants in the south! You have to try Mateo! It is AMAZING! And Pizzeria Toro!
Durham has been rated best foodie capital of the south by many publications recently and have gotten rave reviews from other publications as well. A few to (website hidden) if you are interested: Southern Living's The South's Tastiest Town and The New York Times's 36 Hours in Durham.
From the airport, it is easiest to take a 20 minute cap ride to get here. If you are arriving by car, there is plenty of free on-street parking.
Once here, you can easily walk to campus and shops, or you can rent a bike from a fabulous local bike shop, Durham Cycles, which would allow you to explore the town even more easily. We both bike almost exclusively to get around town. It's another reason we love Durham!

It was a nice experience. It was in a quiet neighborhood located only a hew blocks from some great eating establishments and stores as well as a walking track. My hostess was unfortunately not feeling well so I did not meet either her or her husband but did enjoy meeting her mother who made me feel welcomed.
Sara and Jeff were wonderful hosts. They were extremely flexible with our less than ideal arrival time. The room felt warm, and comfy, but also very stylish. Their home was extremely inviting and happy. They left us information about the city, about where to eat in the Triangle Area, and events to check out. We didn't interact with them at all, as our schedules were out of sync, but Sara and Jeff kept in contact to make sure we were comfortable and were doing well. Highly recommend.
Sara and Jeff were great hosts. The room and bathroom were lovely, the place is in a nice neighborhood, and everything was in place for us to enjoy our visit.
Our stay was wonderful! Sara and Jeff are great hosts and made us feel very welcome. The bed was very comfortable, and Durham has so much to offer! We did not have a car most of the time so we walked EVERYwhere from the house, it was perfect!
About the Host, Sara & Jeff
I love traveling and getting to explore new places, and try to leave the country at least once a year. My recent favorite places were Porto (Portugal), Berlin (Germany), and Tangier (Morocco). There are just so many magical places on earth: my list of places to visit will always be longer than time will ever allow for.
But I also am fortunately to live in a city that I absolutely love! Durham is amazing! It has an amazing local food scene, a lovely farmers market, and many great art galleries, as well as the Sarah Duke Gardens- one of the most beautiful (and free!) gardens imaginable!
A few random things I like: drinking tea, gardening, checking out the local food scene, yoga, hiking, swimming in lakes, reading, and spending time with friends, of course.
