Very safe and secure property with someone always onsite, as well as Machete, the trusty guard dog. This is a destination retreat, so a rental car is recommended to see and do the most during your vacation. Taxis, buses is an option for those of you not in a rush, and have time to explore, but it is not a very convenient way to travel in this rural region .
This Oasis is in the heart of hundreds of acres of ranch land, on the rural outskirts of the sleepy little town of Matapalo... is known as Monte Grande, where the monkey's, exotic birds, iguanas and other animals live in peace. There are private hiking trails throughout the property that leads to a breath taking ocean viewpoint ideal for watching the sunsets. There are lush gardens surrounding the pool to assure a comfortable, cool, shady, pretty place to just chill & relax, which is the most important activity to do here.
This is the perfect place for an affordable, blissful vacation to share with family and friends.
A helpful tool is the house blog / online scrapbook... On it you will find Daniel's top suggested restaurants, and how to operate certain mechanics in the house, as well as what to do in case of an emergency.
Host onsite, available 24/7 for emergencies, and 9am - 9 pm for anything else.
Interaction with Guests
As much or as little the guest requires. Most people come here for peace, quiet and privacy, so we respect that and try to stay out of site as much as possible, but for the social guests we are happy to visit.
The neighborhood consists of birds, bees, monkeys, iguanas, and cows & horses in the pastures below. The closest neighborhood 'Barrio Monte Grande' starts 700 meters away.
4x4 is recommended in costa rica in general, more so here. The host has a normal car, but also a lot of experience driving on these roads. Most guests are visiting for a short time, so a rental car is recommended, and we do get discounted rates with our preferred rental car agency, and that is something we can help you with immediately after a reservation has been made. If you are not in a hurry, you have patience, time buses and taxis are available within a 10 minute walk to the house. Taxis can come to the door.
Other Things to Note
If a rustic cabin in the woods, and a true costa rica experience is something that appeals to you, this is the perfect vacating getaway for you. If you want in all-inclusive luxury resort, this affordable, jungle estate is probably not for you.
- Be green; turn off lights, fans, coffeemaker when you leave the room. Use your towels more than once, and don't waste water during the dry months.
- Washing machine operates differently than what you might be accustom to. It can only handle 10 pounds of laundry at a time.
- Casa Bambu can be dangerous for small children, so keep an eye out for them going up / down stairs, on the balcony's and in or around the pool.
- Friendly Watch dog is onsite, but can be removed at any time, or tied up during the day if you wish.
- This is a destination retreat. A rental car is highly recommended.
We had a great time in Casa Bambu! We didn't had good experiences on previous trips with animals, but the two dogs and one cat where great company. The couple who cleaned the house where very friendly. The house was on a top location, away from the tourist spots, but close to all the beaches! Really great!
The only thing that we missed was proper (wine/beer)- glasses and kitchen stuff.
As others have mentioned, the stay at Casa Bambu is definitely memorable. The location is off the beaten path so it requires a 4x4 and driving is necessary to get to food, beach, etc. Casa Bambu is just that-- bamboo, so the space is created in such a way that the bathrooms are outside and you get visits from the local insects and lizards. The space is a transition between nature and housing, with essentials like air conditioning (very grateful as it was very hot), refrigerator, and dishes provided. Daniel was not on site, but available over the phone when issues came up, and the owners stopped patio construction while we were there. Overall, this is a unique experience for those that want something quiet, intertwined with nature's critters, and off the beaten path.
Merci Daniel
My family and I just returned from our week at Casa Bambu and we cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed our vacation. We have been describing it as the best of both worlds - a beach vacation (many beaches!) with the luxury of feeling like you were going home every night... with pets (Machete and Loca the dogs - and Hunter the cat) waiting for you!
Our kids (both 11) loved the pool for their morning swim, heading to the beach for the afternoon to surf and swim and then returning home in the evening to swing in the hammocks and play cards on the deck. (being Canadian, we did have to tune into Stanley Cup playoffs a couple of nights... shhh! The reception was perfect!) Get yourself a 4x4 for the approach to Monte Grande and exploring beaches, enjoy the sounds of the howler monkeys, and relax in this wonderful "tree -house" like home. We miss it already.
2 pieces of advice:
1. Listen to /read/follow every bit of advice that Daniel gives you. He will not steer you wrong. From restaurants to beaches to activities - we thoroughly enjoyed everything he suggested.
2. Just go. And when you do - give Machete, Loca, and Hunter a hug for us...
Definitely stay here! Daniel is a conscientious and considerate host. The bamboo house is a once in a lifetime experience and we haven't stopped bragging to our friends about what an incredible experience this place was.
The dogs, machete and Loca were sweet as can be and made us feel safe and welcomed. We went to explore the lookout point and they were there to guide us and keep us safe.
The house itself is full of charm and character. We felt immediately comfortable and were close to so many wonderful locations. Daniel leaves a list of recommendations, many of which exceeded expectations. The beaches in the area are much nicer and quieter than tamarindo but you're still nice and close if you want to stop by.
We would definitely stay here again and recommend this place to anyone visiting beautiful Costa Rica.
My family just returned from a week-long stay at Monte Grande. . . what an absolutely wonderful experience. The house itself is exactly as described and is better than what the photos convey. My husband, my two sons and myself could not get enough of the hammocks or lounging around the pool. The location is perfect, with many restaurants, markets and beaches not far at all. We found it very easy to navigate to many little towns and beaches in the area. That being said, we rented a 4x4 and were glad that we did. The days were very warm, however there was always a strong breeze and it cooled down nicely in the evening. We cooked breakfast every morning, hung around the pool and then headed to the beach around lunch time. All of the beaches Daniel recommends are great. Our favorites were Playa Conchal and Playa Ventana. From the moment I made an inquiry about booking the property, Daniel was highly responsive. And while we were staying at Monte Grande he checked in to be sure we had everything we needed. In addition, Mario, the care taker, was wonderful! I can't say enough about our experience. We fell in love with this house and plan to return again and again.
My 4 girlfriends and I had a great experience at Casa Bambu. The host was extremely communicative and promptly addressed any questions or concerns we had. It was so nice to be immersed in nature and stay in an airy bambu palace. The views were really beautiful and the sound of the outdoors was really refreshing. Kitchen had everything we needed and the internet worked really well for us. Loved chilling in the hammocks and playing cards on the outdoor table. Location was great...would definitely recommend renting a car and this way you have easy access to many beaches, towns, and you're only about 20min from Tamarindo if you want to experience the busy downtown!
The house was off the beaten trail and slightly challenging to find when you're driving yourself there for the first time, but everyone in the area is extremely helpful and we found the place.
Would definitely recommend the place! Very cool experience staying in a place with such interesting architecture. Made for great pictures and story telling.
