About this listing
Riad Porte Royale is a classic courtyard house in the historic medina of Marrakech, renovated in the purest style by its British owner, and famous for its relaxing and elegant atmosphere.
With its white walls and rooms, Riad Porte Royale is a welcome contrast after an overdose of sensory Marrakech, with plenty of corners to talk in or read or take it easy, and a 3 x 2 metre plunge pool in the traditional courtyard for the hotter months. The exotic pink roof terrace has sun-beds, a large and airy white canopy, and views of nearby palms, and is a perfect place on sunny mornings to have breakfast, which is included.
Although our staff can provide in-house catering, with excellent Moroccan cuisine, we are close to a variety of famous and popular restaurants, such as Dar Yacout, Dar Zellij and I Limoni.
Our manager, who speaks English, French and Spanish, can arrange reservations, as well as any trips you may have in mind, such as to the Atlas Mountains, the Ourika Valley, and desert quad bikes, white water rafting and canyoning for the more adventurous. We can recommend spas and cookery courses, and also a henna artist.
The roof terrace, first floor loggia, the courtyard and the Moroccan salon are open to all guests.
Interaction with Guests
As often or as little as the guest wishes. In general the staff are polite and keep a discrete distance until required.
We are ideally located in a peaceful area which gives an interesting insight to local daily life, yet favoured by the Hermès family, and home to famous restaurants such as Dar Yacout. so saying, the riad is close to the beautiful shrine of Sidi Bel Abbess, and a few minutes walk from major museums and monuments such as the Medersa of Ben Yussef and the colourful shops in the souks leading to Djemma el Fna. However, we are also just metres from the old ramparts, giving rapid access to other tourist attractions such as the Majorelle Gardens, and Guéliz, the modern town of Marrakech with its chic cafés, restaurants and shops.
Taxis are two minutes walk from the riad—or we can order one on your behalf.
Other Things to Note
Please note the price shown is per room per night with breakfast, and the weekly rate is for exclusive use of the Riad Porte Royale (all five bedrooms). For couples travelling with a baby/toddler we can provide a cot for a small extra charge, but otherwise our policy is no more than two people to a room . Please ask for a quote for other time frames or smaller groups. We can liaise with other riads for larger groups and organise celebration dinners with musicians. Transport on arrival is easily arranged.
Be respectful to the neighbours and staff as well as to other guests of the Riad.
Please bear in mind that Morocco is a Muslim country and although alcohol is sold in shops and supermarkets, consumption is only allowed indoors and it is strictly forbidden by law to drink it on the streets. We can order wine in on your behalf.
Smoking is allowed in the courtyard or on the roof terrace, but not in the rooms.
There is no charge for water from the filter machine in the kitchen.
The riad is picture perfect. Philip has been a great communicator prior to my stay and during my stay. The Riad can be easily accessed and there is a taxi hub right by the gate. Philip, along with Badr (manager) gave us great advice about the city and sights to visit. Hospitality was amazing. The lady who prepared our breakfast was kind, also. Enjoyed my stay a lot.
The description of the riad on the home page is correct and we enjoyed very much our stay.
Philip was very helpful visiting Marrakech before going to Scotland the day after we had arrived.
The onsite manager Badr was fantastic. He was extremely informative, friendly and happy to organise anything we wanted to do during our stay.
He is an asset to the Riad and made our trip tailored and unique!
We completely adored staying at the Porte Royale Riad. Philip and Badr were the perfect hosts and the Riad itself is so calm and beautiful. Breakfasts were delicious and set us up for the day. And Badr arranged a trip for us at the shortest notice. All in all it was just great. The only small hiccough was our airbnb itinerary did not have the name of the Riad and I stupidly thought I was looking for a Riad called Zen rather than Porte Royale - which caused confusion. As much my stupidity as an oversight on their part. But worth relating in case someone else makes the same error as yours truly. We hope to return however!!!
The reservation was canceled 40 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Philips place was great. We where the only guests during our stay and so had basically a home away from home. It was a real sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the medina. Recommend it to anyone wanting to be close to the action or retreat to a tranquil space. It is a little hard to find but Philip goes to great lengths to make this as easy as possible. We had a great time.
About the Host, Philip
I was born in London but spent part of my childhood in Washington DC. I studied planning and architecture in Scotland, and later taught in the Middle East and Portugal, where I now live most of the year. I have also been published as an author, and my novels, all with North African themes, will be available shortly as eBooks. Our home in Marrakech is a perfect place to unwind and introduce guests to Moroccan culture and hospitality, and let them enjoy a collection of rugs and objets d'art from the Arab world and Africa.
