The Space

Riad Porte Royale is a classic courtyard house in the historic medina of Marrakech, renovated in the purest style by its British owner, and famous for its relaxing and elegant atmosphere.

With its white walls and rooms, Riad Porte Royale is a welcome contrast after an overdose of sensory Marrakech, with plenty of corners to talk in or read or take it easy, and a 3 x 2 metre plunge pool in the traditional courtyard for the hotter months. The exotic pink roof terrace has sun-beds, a large and airy white canopy, and views of nearby palms, and is a perfect place on sunny mornings to have breakfast, which is included.

Although our staff can provide in-house catering, with excellent Moroccan cuisine, we are close to a variety of famous and popular restaurants, such as Dar Yacout, Dar Zellij and I Limoni.
Our manager, who speaks English, French and Spanish, can arrange reservations, as well as any trips you may have in mind, such as to the Atlas Mountains, the Ourika Valley, and desert quad bikes, white water rafting and canyoning for the more adventurous. We can recommend spas and cookery courses, and also a henna artist.

Guest Access

The roof terrace, first floor loggia, the courtyard and the Moroccan salon are open to all guests.

Interaction with Guests

As often or as little as the guest wishes. In general the staff are polite and keep a discrete distance until required.

The Neighborhood

We are ideally located in a peaceful area which gives an interesting insight to local daily life, yet favoured by the Hermès family, and home to famous restaurants such as Dar Yacout. so saying, the riad is close to the beautiful shrine of Sidi Bel Abbess, and a few minutes walk from major museums and monuments such as the Medersa of Ben Yussef and the colourful shops in the souks leading to Djemma el Fna. However, we are also just metres from the old ramparts, giving rapid access to other tourist attractions such as the Majorelle Gardens, and Guéliz, the modern town of Marrakech with its chic cafés, restaurants and shops.

Getting around

Taxis are two minutes walk from the riad—or we can order one on your behalf.

  • We stayed for 8 nights and had a fabulous time. The riad was beautiful.we ate lovely home cooked breakfast under a grapefruit tree in the court yard.We had fires in the chilly February evenings. We were really well looked after by Badr who organised bicycle hire (a great way to see the city) ,quad biking in the Atlas Mountains , which was amazing .Badr was so friendly and helpful and he made us all feel so welcome and he really looked after us We could not have wished for more! Nijad who cooked for us every morning and cleaned the riad every day was also wonderful .She had a great sense of humour and was very kind . NIjad and Badr defiantly contributed to our great experience in marrakesh. The riad is situated in a great location ,you can really experience local traditional living away from the hustle and bustle. We hired bicycle s which was good as it's about a 20 minute walk to the main square. I would defiantly recommend this riad spotlessly clean tasteful decor good location and lovely people looking after all your needs.we were a family with two children they even went in the plunge pool brrrrrrrrr not so warm in February we all had a fabulous experience would highly recommend !

  • A simple, beautiful oasis away from the rich and colorful chaos of the Medina. Set in the northern part of the Medina, this peaceful Riad is a perfect place that combines well-designed rooms, visually pleasing relaxing sitting rooms and a calming and relaxing roof deck where we often enjoyed an excellent breakfast every day prepared by Nigit and Badr–the staff at Port Royale. Badr is the perfect host. Think of him as host/concierge/guide all wrapped in one. Great energy and extremely engaging to hang out with. Ask him about his fav seafood eatery in the new Town. It was one of our best experiences. And so reasonable! From the moment we arrived at the train station to our taxi cab back, every moment was taken care of by the staff at Port Royale, especially Badr. When we return to Marrakech, we will definitely return to this Riad.

  • Staying in this riad was absolutely the best experience ever!! The staff working at the riad was extremely generous and helpful, always making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The breakfast spreads in the morning were incredible and the riad is located in an excellent area, right inside the walls of the Old City. It was decorated beautifully and was very comfortable. I would recommend staying here to anyone!

I was born in London but spent part of my childhood in Washington DC. I studied planning and architecture in Scotland, and later taught in the Middle East and Portugal, where I now live most of the year. I have also been published as an author, and my novels, all with North African themes, will be available shortly as eBooks. Our home in Marrakech is a perfect place to unwind and introduce guests to Moroccan culture and hospitality, and let them enjoy a collection of rugs and objets d'art from the Arab world and Africa.
