About this listing
Want to get away from it all? This spacious, listed building boasts magnificent, panoramic sea views over Newquay Bay & Harbour and is the perfect location for a short break or extended vacation.
Perfect for a private getaway, nestling against the cliffs above Towan Beach is this unique gem of a detached, characterful, period cottage with fantastic sea views – probably the best in Newquay. Four hundred years old and retaining a wealth of original features Towan Vean is nevertheless comfortable, homely, well-equipped and close to beaches. The sea views may be enjoyed whilst enjoying your early morning cup of tea in bed and also from the balcony whilst relaxing in the hammock. Fishing boats and leisure craft sail in and out of the historic harbour and local children often make sport leaping off the harbour walls into the clear turquoise waters below. Just below the house is the coastal path which leads to the harbour in one direction and to the headland in the other; the facilities of the town are also within easy walking distance (the Harbour Restaurant is just 100 yards). There are 11 beaches in the Newquay area all offering golden sands and clear waters - no wonder Newquay is such a popular family resort.
The house has been completely refurbished and has fitted wardrobes, a bathroom with a power shower, as well as a deep, cast iron bath, fully fitted kitchen including gas hob and oven, fridge, freezer and dishwasher.
The property benefits from an unusually long 29ft reception area with two original fire places, a very spacious utility area with a washing machine and a downstairs cloakroom.
There are two balconies overlooking the sea and a small, private garden. The house has gas central heating and wooden floors throughout and benefits from its own parking. This property is truly one-of-a-kind.
BE CAREFUL! I made reservations a few months in advanced. My parents booked tickets from abroad to join us. I booked tickets from Birmingham to Newquay for my family. 2 weeks before the holiday Lucia contacted me to say that either I add 200 GBP or she'll cancel my reservations! Airbnb contacted her to explain this was not acceptable practice and that she will not be able to let someone else book for the same dates but to no avail. I had to pay the extra to avoid stressing out my entire family. I then asked her to check out at 3PM rather than 10AM and she declined!
In terms of the house itself--we were freezing cold. We contacted the house manager to ask where the thermostat is. They keep it in a locked room in the house so guests can't control the temperature. No one came to change the thermostat even though I clearly wrote we were freezing. The house is right on the beach so it gets really cold. Kept waking up in the middle of the night from the cold and there were no extra blankets (this was in JULY!!!).
We had a lovely week at Towan Vean in late May. The cottage itself is superbly located - a very easy walk into town. We were met on arrival and had a very enjoyable stay after a small initial glitch that was speedily and helpfully rectified. Newquay is the perfect base from which to explore Cornwall and Towan Vean an excellent choice -recommended.
We had a wonderful stay at Lucia’s house. The location is excellent, just next to the harbor, and between central Newquay and Fistral Beach. It was wonderful to wake up every morning with a view over the ocean.
There are also large supermarket nearby and several restaurants and pubs are only minutes away. If you are a family with young kids like us, there is a pub (‘The Fort Inn’) opposite Sainsbury’s which has a softplay area inside and a climbing frame outside + excellent views.
Lakeside Cafe was another child friendly eatery, tasty food and very well priced (you drive past it just before you get into town).
We also visited several beaches in the area, the Newquay Aquarium (small but not bad), the Lappa Valley Steam Railway and Jungle Jack’s soft play centre as well as St Michael’s Mount. On the way back we spent a few hours at Diggerland (Devon). Everything was a success, even the weather.
The communication with Lucia and her housekeeper was excellent, they were accommodating to all or request, in particular around flexible check-in/out times.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay and hope that we get the opportunity to return one day.
The reservation was canceled 152 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Pleasant stay in a nice, small house overlooking the surf. That said, it was spacious with a lot of warmth and character. (The wood burning stove needs to be serviced because smoke leaks into the house.)
Great location to quickly get in and out of Newquay; perfect for easily travelling the entirety of Cornwall, up and down the coast. Overall, we recommend the place as a base to explore the beautiful country.
The house was perfect for us. It had everything we needed, with great views. It is close to the town, and the harbour area, but it is also quiet and relaxing. We would love to return.
The cottage is fab. Really relaxing and great views out to sea. Two good size bedrooms. I would recommend to anyone to stay here.
