Gorgeous light spacious Penthouse. Situated in the heart of the Renaissance Bastide. Easy walk to the Medieval City. Close to free and paid parking, superb markets and Carcassonne's best theatres and restaurants. Easy drive to countless sites.

The Space

Very spacious and exceptionally light loft apartment in the historic centre of Carcassonne's Renaissance Bastide. Parking is nearby both free and paid. The penthouse is available all year round. The apartment enjoys a large private south facing terrace. Ideal for groups of friends, families or couples. Equipped for baby. Equally ideal for a holiday with or without a car. Near by swimming, lakes, markets, vineyards cathar catles and much more. The apartment is extremely comfortable and exceptionally light and spacious. All three bedrooms are included in the apartment rental. It is private and self contained as is the beautiful calm south facing terrace where smoking is allowed. Good free broadband wireless connetion.

The apartment is minutes awy from Carcassonne's best markets, delicatessens, restaurants and theatre and the Cathedral of St Michel and a pretty walk to the Medieval city.

The train station is 500 metres walk and the local buses are a block away. The apartment has all the benefits of being in the city centre without being on a busy road.

Other Things to Note

Wecome to the Carcassonne Penthouse

Just a few little local tips and directions for your stay. Please let us know as soon as possible if anything is in need of repair and we will do our best to have it fixed immediately. We are also happy to be informed of other appropriate equipment that would have added to the pleasure and convenience of your stay.
The visitors book
The visitor’s book is a good resource for recommendations and tips. It is kind if you can also make a note of things you have particularly enjoyed or any great adventures you have discovered while out and about.

Don’t forget that there are many more restaurants on the Boulevard around the Bastide and in the Cité. The cards of recommended places are with our cards. Please pick up a card or a flier for the apartment if you are very satisfied with a restaurant or entertainment.

The Medieveal Cité has many very decent restaurants with agreeable out door settings and very reasonable prices. It tend to stay up later than the Bastide.
The brown bins on the street are communal for house hold rubbish. The ones nearest to the apartment are outside the ‘Hotel de la police’ just two doors along to the left. Plastic bin bags are stored in a white dispenser under the kitchen sink. There is a compost on the terrace that reduces the ammount of stair work and is ‘eco’ . It is good for tea bags, all vegetable waste, citrus. Please NO BREAD OR MEAT.

Any occassional watering of the plants greatly appreciated.

Do not worry unduly about throwing away perishibles. We always keep an eye to detroy things which are past it and otherwise people are generally happy to finish up the odd bits an pieces left over from a visit between the cleaner, the dogs, the next visitors and ourselves usually nothing is wasted.

The oven works extremely well but does have a safety lockin g mechanism that can seem arbitrary. It only happens when the oven is off and to re-open the door needs to be on the far left setting and the right hand setting on one of the settings after 1é O’clock.

Washing and Ironing
There is an ironing board in the cupboard under the stairs, next to the washing machine. The washing machine is a washer dryer and the instruction are in the laundry next to kit. If there is washing powder in the laundry you are welcome to use it but it is not, as a rule, provided.

Cleaning and linen
Please do not worry about making the beds the day before you leave. Please strip them if you have a chance and leave dirty linen in a heap in the bath. Please leave clean linen folded. If you need to do clearing up during your stay will find vacuum cleaner, buckets and mops rags detergent etc in the little room beyond the bathroom.

If you have opted to do the clean please make sure bathrooms are vacuumed and washed, bins emptied, kitchen items put away and surfaces dusted and go through with the vacuum cleaner including sofas if necessary. Do not worry about the mop, or windows unless there has been exceptional usage.

If you have opted for the service clean you are very welcome to use the vacuum cleaner should you need it.

The apartment has a lot of bulbs so please be careful to keep lights switched off when you are out. The television has a plug board with a switch so that it is easy to disconnect the standby current which we are told consumes a lot of electricity. We charge the electricity at consumption to encourage prudence and keep the general rental price of the apartment lower.

The electricity panel is at the far right end of the little room behind the bathroom.
Hot water is at the bottom right. It is a small black switch and has off position, auto and 1 which means constsnt. Hot water is on automatic for you when you arrive Automatic is usually fine for visitors without children or who do not all bathe at the same time.

Should the electricity trip during your stay the trip levers are the orange switches on the top left.

Please strip the beds when you leave. Leave in a heap or in the bath. Please leave any clean linen folded.

Hot weather
The window in the kitchen makes a nice through breeze in warm weather. There are two airconditioning units. Another trick is to leave the french windows open in the day when you are out and the shutters shut to encourage cool breeze.

The Terrace
Terrace electric shutters are electronically operated with a toggle switch first two top right hand switches on the left of the French windows.
The terrace light is controlled by a switch next to the switches for the electric shutters.
Feel free to use the barbeque. You may find left over charcoal in the bucket marked « charbon ». Please clean the barbeque thoriugly after use. Long tongs are in the kitchen.
We make an effort to water plants adequately between visits but in very hot weather plants can suffer. Please slp them a little water if they seem to be suffering or let us know.

Compost bin
There is compost bin at the far end of the terrace. This is good for tea bags, all vegetable waste, citrus but not meat or news paper. This will save trips to the rubbish bin for you. The tupperware container with the sealable lid is for storing compost.

The siren
The first Wednesday of every month at Midday the town tests the sirens. Do not be alarmed I suppose it is something to do with the barracks but be warned it emmanates from the police building next to the apartment so sounds pretty loud but be assured that it does not occur regularly.

Internet connection
Full details for client access are in the telephone cabinet along with a CD
The SSID network name is: TECOM-AH4222-55C140
The 26 digit WEP code is also marked on the router itself.

We grow an abundance of mediterranean herbs at the château. We intend to one day sell them but in the meantime have more than we know what to do with so we always have a selection in the kitchen. They are grown organically. If you would like to order some to send as a gift just say the word. We do have a price list and they are freely available while you are in the apartment.

Some of the posters and other decorative objects are for sale. We are raising money to repair the roof of the Château de St Ferriol. Any visitors contributing in this way are of course very welcome to visit the site when it is open and are kept up to date with renovation progress.

Check In
  • Sophie's apartment was spacious and bright and well located with parking nearby. Sophie greeted us at the apartment and was helpful with local information.
However, although having some sympathy for obvious cleaner issues, it was disappointing to be welcomed into an apartment that had not been cleaned for some time (smelly bathrooms and kitchen, dirty dishes in cupboard) and not prepared for our visit (two towels -one clean, one dirty for four people, and bed not made with no suitable linen available). Sophie returned the 70€ cash we had given her on arrival (for linen and cleaning) which was appreciated as we were not able to fully enjoy the apartment facilities and prudently ate out for meals.
If the above issues were not present this would have been a lovely apartment.

    Response from Sophie:

I was very embarased by this. The lack of attention to detail and cleanliness that Maureen and family had for their short stay was totally out of character due to a misunderstanding about which measures have been taken that it will not happen again. We usually have the apartment pristinely clean.

  • Sophie's apartment was lovely. It was clean, spacious and very well equipped. It is located just a couple of blocks from the center of town, where there is a farmers market three times a week. It is within walking distance to everything, which is a real plus. Sophie was also very helpful with directions and suggestions for places to visit.

  • The Penthouse waslight-filled, beautifully appointed, and fully equipped. It looked more like someone's home than a rental apartment. The terrace provided great oudoor space. This would not be an appropriate rental for those who can't climb lots of stairs. It's three large sets of stairs to the ground floor of the apartment and then the kitchen is on the next level.

  • Sophiie was very helpful considering the situation, I was trying to book trains, accommodation and such after the fact, my daughter and son had already on a snap trip to France, they live in Canada, and I in Australia. Add to the mix my wife decided to join them... Being summer in France, and having two seriously jet lagged young adults who lost their luggage and couldn't speak french, It became a challenge. Through this website I discovered Sophie and booked with her, on very short notice... Sophie was really good communicating and rang me several times to get everything sorted out, even though it was her birthday and she had plans, she made the effort to have the keys ready with her neighbours and kindly gave us phone numbers and so on. so, with other mishaps like missed trains Sophie was kind enough to ensure it was all good in the end... I should apologise to Sophie for all the headaches we mat have caused her.... But, everyone loved the flat and enjoyed Carcassonne, so chapeau Sophie!
