Honeymoon Island Cottage is a lodging experience like no other. You and your guest will stay in a charming tiny farmhouse that is located just steps from the Chesapeake Bay on a USDA certified organic farm. Enjoy access to a private saltwater pool, private beach, Chesapeake Bay water access for boating, swimming, paddleboarding, fishing or just soaking, dig for clams, collect wild oysters, or just sit and marvel at the beauty. We look forward to welcoming you.

The space
Honeymoon Island Cottage is perhaps one of the most unique lodging experiences one can have on the Eastern Shore of Va. The tiny house overlooks the location of the Island that gave it its name, Honeymoon Island. The island, once part of the Laughing King Farm was frequented by Honeymooners for decades before time, and the unrelenting wind and waves of the mighty Chesapeake claimed the island for herself. Today only memories and land records are evidence that it ever existed. The cottage has several unique features that make it a stand out. The first is its origin story. The cottage is a reconfiguration of an older larger farm cottage that was claimed by a giant walnut tree. Lovingly repurposed and recycled the cottage boasts a dormered sleeping loft that is tall enough to stand comfortably in. The loft contains one king size bed that features a new green tea memory foam mattress, plenty of large plush pillows, 100% cotton bedding, and duvee, and an all-season comforter. The loft is airconditioned. Downstairs, comfortable leather easy chairs and a large leather sofa provide ample room to spread out and relax, the decor is a collection of personal antiques and finds highlighted by an antique Persian rug from the owner's private collection. There is a small fridge for your use. The bathroom brings together an eclectic design that can best be described as concrete industrial minimalism meets vintage motorcycle. The bath features a custom concrete countertop vanity, and a front to back shotgun style window configuration that allows you to take in views of both the farm and the bay while you and your partner enjoy the luxury of your own personally controlled showerhead. There is a separate private bath entrance so that you can rinse off after a day at the beach or pool before you enter the cottage.

Guest access
Laughing King guests have full access to the stunningly landscaped waterfront pool that features a saltwater water treatment system, chaise lounges, sun deck, shaded and full sun lounging options, as well as a fire pit, waterfront gazebo, giant poolside palapa and much more. The private beach and the bay are just a few steps away from the pool. The beach has a gradual water entrance that is perfect for launching your paddleboard or kayak. The Retreat is situated on a 60-acre organic farm that has miles of paths and trails for exploring and observing our rich natural environment, there is a small lake on the farm that is a wonderful spot to bird watch, fish, or paddle. If you enjoy road biking, we are blessed with well maintained hard surface country roads with very little traffic. We are a short drive from Savage Dunes Neck Natural Wildlife Preserve that features miles of beaches for combing and wild towering sand dunes to marvel at, Osprey and Bald Eagles abound.
Laughing King is blessed with porches, lots of porches, our two large screen porches are furnished with large couches and chairs that are great to curl up on with your favorite book, your journal, or your lover. The front porch is a southern charmer with comfortable rocking chairs that face the centuries-old Ash trees that line the drive.
Feeling the need to express your inner Julia Child? go for it! When breakfast is over you can take command of the fully equipped gourmet kitchen and prepare that roasted chicken recipe that you have been dying to try out. Provisions can be had at any one of our local grocery or specialty stores, farm stands, or fresh seafood markets, all within about 15 min. of us. (all we ask is that you handle the dishes)
The library has a small but nice book collection, and the pool table in the game room is a great place to settle a bet. If you are here in the summer and forgot to bring your straw hat, not to worry, we have a straw hat lending library that is a guest favorite. Help yourself.

Other things to note
The Laughing King is on a secluded peninsula and at night it gets really DARK. For stargazing purposes we keep the outdoor lighting to a minimum so if you are arriving after dark, please have your cell phone or a flashlight handy.

We are focused on providing our guests with a quiet, relaxing, rejuvenating experience therefore, loud anything is not permitted at any time. Motorized vehicles like four wheelers, motorcycles (other than ones used to bring you here) or jet skis are not permitted. Quiet gatherings around the pool or the fire pit with other guests? Thumbs up! Midnight skinny dip? highly encouraged! As a safeguard to the quiet enjoyment of the retreat by all of our guests, parties or events are NOT permitted. We want you to love your time spent with us at The Laughing King as much as we love sharing the place with you. If there is anything we can do to help you enjoy your stay, just ask. The LK was established in the spring of 2000, we have been entertaining folks here from all over the world since then. If there is something you need to enhance your enjoyment of your stay we probably know a guy or gal that has just what you are looking for (a boat, a bike, a kite, a chef, a nature guide, a yogi, a masseuse, a priest...a welder, just ask)

Hi, I am M.J., married to Suzanne, we have three children and live in VA on the Eastern Shore about an hour north of VA Beach. I like to travel with my family, garden, and kiteboard. 20 years ago I convinced my young bride, Suzanne, that a hole would be torn in the universe and life as we knew it would cease to exist if we didn’t buy a waterfront farm on the Eastern Shore of Va. She reluctantly agreed and The Laughing King Farm was born. 14 years ago I penned an 18-page handwritten love note to the same young bride attempting to persuade her to uproot our young family of five (Soup, Sarah, Jake, Tommy and me) from our comfortable suburban life in Vienna Va. to said waterfront farm on the Eastern Shore of Va. Again, she reluctantly agreed and we have never looked back. The Laughing King Retreat is on land that was once the capital of the Native American kingdom of Debedeavon, dubbed “The Laughing King” by the English Settlers that first inhabited this part of Va. in the very early 1600’s. The king was said to have been a really fun guy who smiled and laughed all the time and was very hospitable to his new friends. He taught them the best fishing and hunting spots what to eat and where to find the best food. We have been entertaining guests from all over the world for 20 years as amateurs and last year we decided to turn pro. The Laughing King Retreat with its sweeping Chesapeake Bay vistas, 60 acres of organic farm, our southern style home, vintage Airstream, and cottages are now available for your enjoyment, and in the spirit of our namesake, Debedeavon, we strive to make everyone feel like an old friend and we will do our very best to make you feel warm and welcome as well as smile and laugh all the time. Welcome to the farm!
