shelter island was lovely. The location of the house is very convenient to farmstands and the beach. You can bike over which is quite lovely. The ferry ride to the island was such a novel experience, escaping from the traffic and crowds of the Hamptons into our own little world of serenity. Although, a convenient 10 minute ferry to sag harbor or Greenport for shopping and more dining options (although plenty of nice restaurants on the island that you won't need to leave). The house was sweet and very nicely decorated. It's surrounded by trees, so you can't be afraid of bugs. It took me a bit to get used to the large dinosaur ants, but they're harmless. It's an old house, so there are door handles that don't work and some doors that don't close because of alignment or the dozens of layers of paint! Its not polished, but it's cozy and looked after and quite an idyllic environment for a rustic country getaway. The linens were beautiful and beds very comfy! We loved sitting in the garden under the lanterns and lights that twinkle in the trees. The garden!! It's large and spacious and very quiet. There is fresh lavender and raspberries growing by the pool area, which was fun to pick and make crepes out of. The annoying part of shelter island is that you have to take your trash to the town dump yourself, so it was best to do it every other day, if not every day to avoid flies and maggots if you leave it outside. We learned the hard way! Luckily the dump was just down the street, so it wasn't as inconvenient as it could have been. Also, there's no air conditioning, so on a hot day it can be a bit uncomfortable, although the fans helped. All in all, it was a lovely experience and we had a wonderful time during our stay.

About the Host, Maria
I am a screenwriter who lives in LA and Shelter Island. Both places have incredible light and I live outdoors most of the time. Shelter Island is especially meaningful to me because it is where I usually spend my winters writing. Los Angeles works because I am at Sunset Junction in Silverlake and never have to drive anywhere.
