Ollantaytambo is a old inca archaeological site located in the heart of the sacred valley. It is the most common starting point for tourist doing a 3/4 day trek to Machu Picchu and also the point where tourists come to catch the train to Machu Picchu.
It is a very quaint town with friendly, helpful locals.
The town is located approximately 1.5 hours from Cusco and is extremely easy to get to on public transport or by private taxi.
We are less than 3 minute walk to the Plaza de Armas (main square), 15 minutes to the train station for Machu Picchu, next door to Full Moon Lodge and across the street from Don Lucios English Pub.
My wife and I only stayed one night at Mi Pequena Ayuda but it was great! All the hosts were super friendly and willing to help us with travel plans. We booked with them on super short notice (the day before) and they quickly responded to us. The location is good too: 15-20 min walk to the train station/10 min walk to the inca ruins/5 mins to the plaza de armas. We stayed in the private room on the top floor. The room was very clean and neat. We didn't use the showers but they seemed good enough. I recommend staying at Mi Pequena Ayuda if your ever in Ollantaytambo.
The description is very accurate and its quite close to a great market. It can be hard to find by yourself at night but in the daylight it isn't far from the train station at all.
The bed was a bit small for two, but the room was clean, the facilities were nice, the hot water worked well, and Mayra was a great host! Perfect location, too. Overall good experience!
Even though Mi PiquenA Ayuda was full for the weekend, Myra set us up at a wonderful hostel that they partner with. The volunteer work done by Mi Piquena Ayuda is quite commendable and inspirational!
