We arrived later in the evening but the key was available for us to get in and inside there was a basket of goodies for us to use: bread, jam, tea, juice etc which was lovely. The house was a small cottage as described, we wanted to have an authentic Irish experience in a cottage. The grounds around the home were lovely! Plenty of space to roam and take walks. Unfortunately upon our arrival, there was a musty smell to the home and we immediately opened door and windows with the thought it hadn't been occupied recently. While opening the windows and doors helped, we couldn't keep it that way. My husband and daughter who have allergies to mold and dust began to sneeze, cough and wheeze. They were asymptomatic prior to our arrival. We left the cottage for dinner, if the symptoms subsided we would conclude that it was the air in the cottage. Which is what happened. We came back and their symptoms returned. We spent the night, by morning my daughter, who had a difficult night with coughing, sneezing and wheezing despite allergy medicine-was miserable. Her sinuses were clogged, her face swollen and was on her way to a sinus infection. Luckily, I had a prescription for antibiotics with me that I filled prior to our departure. While in the bathroom of the main bedroom, I shut the door there was black mold all over the wall from the bottom to the top...it was also in the window frame around the window. It was quite a bit, I hadn't noticed it the night before as it was dark and the lighting didn't allow me to. This was what was causing the severe allergy issues with my husband and daughter. I quickly wrote Linda an email and we left the cottage, as we knew the longer we stayed they would get worse. We went to Galway for the day. Upon arriving back to the cottage, Linda and her husband had put in a humidifier in the home hoping it would alleviate the issue, were very proactive and were sympathetic to our situation. But we knew we had to leave the home. Our daughter was getting worse despite the antiobiotic. And I was also concerned of my husband getting worse. Upon consultation with Airbnb we decided that the best thing would be to leave as soon as we could to avoid any further worsening of their symptoms. We were able to find a hotel and the next morning we left the cottage. We all felt terrible about what had transpired and we weren't able to meet Linda or her husband, but they were very concerned and sorry for what had happen. They were very nice, and tried their best. Unfortunately it didn't work out for us. We were sad we had to leave, we felt like terrible guests, but the health of our family was paramount. I hope they are able to solve the issue, it's a lovely home.
Our stay at the Old Cottage was fantastic!! We arrived very late and Linda had supplied us with a few food items to help us out the next day and that evening John came and checked to make sure we are settled and ok. We met with Linda the next day at their Mountain Bike facility only minutes away she is warm and welcoming, John gave us a ride to the hilltop so we could have a grand view of rural Ireland..it is breathtaking. My daughter fell in love with their dog Shadow and wanted to take him with us.
We are a family of 4...the oldest is 15 and the cottage fit us great, the grounds are beautiful and the cottage has just what you need. Our family traveled all over Europe this summer all at Airbnb places and The Old Cottage was one of our favorites. Highly recommend it...remember it is in rural Ireland the closest "larger" village is Roscrea about 10-15 minutes drive away. If you want to "get away" this is the spot.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage! It is the perfect setting for an ideal Ireland experience! Linda couldn't have been nicer and the accommodations were perfect!
About the Host, Linda
My husband and I live on the other side of our 450 acre farm and have been involved in self-catering for ten years, only discovering AirBnB in the last while!
We have put our heart and soul into designing the two cottages to ensure they are clean, cosy, bright (with great views) and fully equipped with all the mod cons you need!
We are involved in farming, horse breeding, tourism and have just opened a down hill mountain bike track on our side of the farm. It is very important to us to conserve the natural beauty of our farm, making discrete pathways within and growing thousands of trees in the past decade.
We have recently travelled around New Zealand and love welcoming new people, hearing their stories and trying to make their stay here as enjoyable as possible. We'd love to hear from you, or answer any questions you may have!
We also live on the other side of the farm and would love to meet and help you with any queries on your stay!
