The Space

Go horseback riding, hike to amazing waterfalls, swim in natural rainforest pools, go fishing in the tilapia ponds, observe the many birds, take a walk through the fields and macadamia plantation, or just sit back - and relax!

Finca Rio Perla, our beautiful affiliate eco-farm, is located in a countryside paradise on the slopes of Volcan Turrialba, on a sprawling 240 acres, including many acres of untouched rainforest. High the Caribbean Highlands of Costa Rica, with elevations ranging from about (phone number hidden) feet (350 to 750 meters), the farm is blessed with moderate temperatures, great breezes, amazing views, and a relative lack of insects (like mosquitoes).

The farm (email hidden)sitors to the farm enjoy hiking to the breathtaking waterfalls and swimming in the refreshing natural pools and streams located on protected rainforest land on the farm’s property, horseback riding, strolling around a jungle macadamia grove (and pick your own nuts and cut your own sugarcane), or just chilling on the deck in a rocking chair or a hammock, overlooking a view of that goes on for miles and miles, out to the Caribbean Coast.

Finca Rio Perla is also a working farm, where guests can experience the authentic Costa Rican countryside. The farm has a herd of dairy of cows, sheep, free-range hens, tilapia fishponds, organic vegetable gardens, and a grand macadamia plantation. Guests often partake in various farm activities, such as egg collecting, macadamia harvesting and tending of the organic garden. You can fish your own tilapia for dinner, milk cows in the morning and make your own cheese in the afternoon – or help reforest the land and offset your travel associated carbon emissions by planting trees.

Your (email hidden) Perla will be hosted by a Tico family which provides a unique opportunity to explore, experience, and connect with the authentic Costa Rica. This is a great opportunity to learn or practice Spanish - and a great opportunity to learn or practice Tico cooking.

Guests stay in rustic but comfortable rooms, uniquely decorated with interesting artwork, local woodworking, and furniture. Wide windows offer a spectacular scenic view and cool clean air mountain air, accompanied by soothing sounds of nearby streams, howler monkeys and birds! Rooms on the farm sleep 2-4 people, with shared bathrooms and toilets. The farm has municipal and spring water, electricity, telephone and internet service, as well as many bathrooms and hot showers.

Finca Rio Perla offers traditional Tico (Costa Rican) food that is primarily vegetarian with dairy and eggs, and also tilapia from the farm. The farm’s kitchen tries to use farm-grown products, locally produced products, and organic products whenever possible.

Finca Rio Perla’s activities are based on both traditional and new practices and technologies that maintain and nurture the environment. It strives toward organic and natural production and processing practices and technologies. Its balanced and eclectic approach to sustainable living is called Agro-Eco Pragmatism. In this way the farm challenge itself to think and act locally and globally, while trying to ask the driving questions about the relationships between humans, nature and development.

  • This place is definitely off the beaten path. We stayed here on our way to the carribean coast because we love learning about organic farming methods. The host Johnny is awesome! He greeted us with delicious dinner ready and we had great conversations about all sorts of stuff. Breakfast was great too and the farm tour was very interesting. Unfortunately we didn't have time to stay for longer but we would recommend it because it looked fun!

  • Wonderful Experience! The farm was so beautiful and the photo opportunity outstanding. The folks at Rio Perla treated us like family - only thing that would have make the visit better would have been a few more days!

  • The farm was beautiful. We saw many birds while there and the horses were well kept and nourished. Our host Johnny had plenty of stories to keep us entertained. The meals were very fresh and delicious. The farm is remote, but we stayed here the night before taking a rafting trip down the Pacuare River and it was convenient enough and better than staying in the town of Siquirres. We would recommend coming for more than one night if possible to spend time at the waterfalls

  • This (email hidden) and we really had a wonderful time. It is laid back and the hosts are very nice. Its best that the kids can run anywhere and be safe and parents can relax and enjoy pura vida.
We are interested in watching the hosts continue to develop their vision into the self-sustaining retreat they dream of and it was fun to be there during these early stages. We hope to be back!

  • We really enjoyed out (email hidden) Perla. After a good 30 minute drive from the main road over very rocky roads more comparable to hiking trails than roads (SUVs are the only thing that will drive you through there!), we arrived to a quaint farm that was peaceful and relaxing. A true vacation rising with the sun each morning to work and play with the animals. All the staff was kind and open to our help (even if we ended up not being helpful - milking a cow it tough work!). We spent our days horse back riding, hiking, viewing waterfalls and pools, milking cows and goats, collecting eggs from the chickens, and having good conversation over each delicious typical rico meal. During down time it was great to relax on the porch with a good book, or simply view the wildlife nearby. We saw a variety of birds, including a rainbow toucan! Another sight is seeing Frankie, the dog, do his happy dance!

  • I stayed at the beautiful Finca Rio Perla in the main Posada Rustica for 3 days. Paul, the owner arrived from out of town the same day I did so I got to explore the massive sprawling farmland with him as he surveyed the land seeing what was new (such as the newly built stables for the horses they own) and just taking in the breathtaking landscapes. Some highlights for me were the two beautiful waterfalls we went on horseback and hiked to discover (these are worth the trip alone), watching their great little dog frankie being feisty with the cows, playing with the goats, sucking on fresh sugar cane from the fields and eating fresh homemade ice cream and tasty macadamia nuts. This isn't luxury travel, it's a farm so as long as you know that going in you'll really enjoy it.

  • Efrain and Vivian were excellent hosts. We felt like we were visiting friends, and were treated like family. The hospitality was fabulous and the place is simply gorgeous! The food was farm-fresh and delicious, and the grounds were beautiful. Even though it rained much of the time we were there, I never felt anything but relaxed and happy. Lying in the hammock on the open-air balcony and watching birds between pages of a good book was the perfect way to spend a few hours of rain. When the sun came out we got to ride-horses/walk to the beautiful waterfalls on the property. Catching our own tilapia dinner and introducing the ticos to pumpkin pie (which they were happy to let us make) was definitely the best way to spend Thanksgiving in Costa Rica. Definitely one of the best ways to experience the hospitality and beauty of Costa Rica, as well as support truly sustainable agriculture.
    Thank you Fica Rio-Perla!

  • This place is wonderful. Part of its beauty is how secluded it is- literally off the beaten path. The views are incredible and it was a great way to experience Costa Rica. I did the package of 7 days 6 nights with meals and activities included. It's up to you as a visitor how much or little you make of it. I opted to try and do everything they offered- I milked a goat for the first time and learned how to make cheese with it and got to eat it! Literally a farm to table first hand experience- doesn't get much more real than that! The waterfalls are amazing though some take more hiking than others to get to, again though it's part of the beauty and the experience.

I really enjoyed the farm staff, they were a pleasure and so helpful. The only thing I would say since it wasn't as apparent to me, was that unless you stay in the Casa Central (which is not the main Posada), all of the meals and activities are generally done as a group with whoever else is staying in the various rooms/houses depending on who wants to participate. While I met some interesting people and had fun with them, just know that you are subject to whoever is staying there and that might affect your experience either in a good or not so good way.

This was a truly great way to experience Costa Rica and the beauty of the land. I learned so much from everyone and fell in love with the country!
