I frequent Airbnb's but I don't book them exclusively for my travels because every once in awhile the Holiday Inn Express serves the purpose at the time.
But if every Airbnb was Rustic Avocado Ranch, I'd never surf on the AAA website ever again. It not only was as one of these should be, it transcended that.
Lee (and by extension, her son Anthony and his gal pal) is the quintessential innkeeper: a warmhearted caretaker who avails herself to conversation but knows the value of leaving her guests to their own devices. So, Reciprocity and Balance, two things I personally value in other people. The RA Ranch (never saw ONE Alligator Pear Rustler unless you count the squirrels) has multi-themed (maritime, aviary-esque, familial, Catholic, etc.) and eclectic artifacts adorning nearly every inch of wall space, so a visitor could spend an entire afternoon as if in a museum. My favorite touches: the pour-over coffee set-up for both mornings (strong AND laced with cinnamon, so perfect for me), the pot of soup for self-serving upon arrival, the kitchen wall hanging devoted to the art of Guacamole, and that ocean-ward chair on the porch I used for two sessions of night reading. There was an open, inviting, ready-to-play backgammmon board on that porch that I regret now not having engaged Lee over in a best -of-7 while steeping pots of tea, but travel weariness and a need to continue reading the Steinbeck brought on this trip as is habit prevented. An oversight, yes, but one that is easily rectified with Second Visit. Which will happen. I never need an excuse to go to Carpinteria, but I have an official one now...
amazing spot, so close to town and beach but private, like a little enchanted forest. We loved it! Thank you Lee and family.
The ranch was exactly as described and even more breathtaking in person! I loved staying here, and will absolutely do so again if I find myself on this part of the coast.
Lee is an amazing woman and a fantastic host. I enjoyed having the chance to get to know her.
A great shady spot in the avocado jungle! Lee is an excellent host and we had a fun time in Carpinteria. Memorable breakfasts under the avocado trees. Hope there are some better waves around next time!
All of the reviews that we read before booking were accurate--Lee really sets the standard for hosting airbnb! The house is rustic, which means some creaking floors and critters here and there. But everything is so charming and comfortable! Much better than the pictures, really. We felt right at home and welcome. I enjoyed talking with Lee about her hosting experiences, since we also began hosting about two months ago and had never been a guest before. It was a perfect opportunity, since my husband and I were in Santa Barbara/Carpenteria for a wedding.
The night before the wedding, we shared wine with Lee and her other guests. In the morning, we stood in the kitchen, talking, while people took turns cooking eggs. It was a relaxing, interesting experience--I hope that we can come back someday. Thank you, Lee!
While our busy itinerary in Carpenteria prevented us from meeting Lee in person, my girlfriend and I felt as if we were always welcome. A lovely, quiet setting, but very convenient to town and the beach. The other two rooms were filled by great guests as well. Should my travels ever bring me back to the area, I know where I'll be staying.
Staying in Lee's place was spectacular. It felt like home the instant I walked in. Rustic simply wouldn't do it justice. Under the shade of avocado trees, a spacious backyard with amazing furniture, a garden, hammocks, chickens, chicks, the list goes on. Lee was so accommodating, friendly and thoughtful. If you're looking to stay in a home away from home, I wouldn't look any further. I honestly couldn't recommend a place more than I'd recommend this one.

About the Host, Lee
Often you will find me outside working on a project for the next flea market, weeding/watering or making succulent gardens. Next I'm taking pictures of the statues in my garden for cards that I will send my family and friends. Yes, I'm active, usually starting my day with a 4-5 mile walk with a good friend...I do have my much needed quiet time. The times I embrace the most are when I am with my children, family and friends. We have many gatherings in the backyard to celebrate whatever we can make up a reason to get together for a meal and a good time. This is one of the reasons I wanted to share my home with airbnb guests, to help make your time away from home enjoyable and a time to remember.
