The Space

Welcome to Newtown!

Great location, close to all the best Sydney has to offer. Private garden studio in leafy bamboo draped garden in inner west Sydney with ensuite including toilet, sink, laundry and fabulous new private bamboo-style outdoor shower on the adjoining back deck or choice of share spa bathroom and kitchen in main house.

Happy for you to use share living room/kitchen if discussed prior, 5 mins walk to fabulous facilities - St Peters train station (10 mins to city), Sydney Park for duck ponds, bike riding, kids playgrounds, Marrickville Metro for great shopping, King St for cafes and unbelievable restaurants and clothes shops. All so close yet off the main drag so quiet and peaceful...I am happy to point you towards fun things to do, buses to Coogee beach or trains to the Opera House or Circular Quay to the ferry to Manly- just ask!!!

Basic Brecky & WiFi included. On street parking. You are truly welcome - I live here with my daughter and its very close to Sydney Uni.
I teach yoga on Mondays so you are welcome to join the class if space available! I am also a massage therapist so if you want a really relaxing start to your (email hidden) massage/spa bath can be included for an extra $100!

Queen size bed with comfy sheets, use of washing machine and dryer ( one load included otherwise $5 a load); tea/coffee, small fridge, toaster and microwave also included and access to kitchen in main house if pre-arranged. Dinner included for extra $20.

The Neighborhood

Great cafés, restaurants, parks, pools and all close to the city!

Getting around

5 mins to St. Peter's station

Other Things to Note

As it's an independent studio out in the back garden, if you're precious about insects then this is not for you but if you love and are relaxed in nature - welcome! It's not pretentious and is cosy as in small area, old style but comfy and your own private deck amongst bamboo. Fine for you to access indoor shower too and spa bath.
As I do my washing in the adjoining laundry I ask for access to do a load of washing once or twisted a week when convenient with you. I respect your privacy.

  • Loved staying in this little sanctuary in the heart of Sydney. It was so easy to get into the city from here but also lovely to be able to wonder and explore the delights of Newtown. Mel was so welcoming, I felt completely at home and I will definitely stay again when I am in Sydney.

  • I have stayed in a lot of places over the years, but none as terrible as this... Filthy!!!!.. dead mummiefied lizard on dirty flaky painted concrete toilet (website hidden) slimy mould in hand basin in toilet that had not been cleaned, feaces splattered toilet. .. bathroom outside.. Prepare yourself to stand on a wooden pallet floor, where the water does not run away in a hurry... Goodness know what you could be standing in & what you could pick up !!! . Don't expect any privacy, there is no door... To top it off, could not even sleep there ... we vacated on our 1st night of 3 we were booked in for, around midnight after a cockroach about 3 inches long crawling up the wall where the bed was pushed up against, making its way to the bed, I have no doubt... The owner of these premises, tried telling me it was totally acceptable & normal, for these things to be in where you sleep... & tried to make me feel I was complaining about nothing, which didn't work .. The photos you see are very very deceiving, if you stay there prepare to fight your way thru the vegetation... To get to a very unhygienic place... In the laundry you will find Cereal for your breakfast in the cereal box, opened, not in a sealed container.. plates & dishes on bench not covered, exposed to those cockroaches to crawl over... This is all in the laundry where she does her personal washing ... & the laundry tub .. Hopefully no one else will have to go thru this terrible ordeal like my daughter & I did...

    Response from Melissa:

    Dear Cheryl
I have never met someone as poisonous and negative as you in all my hosting years! You said you were from Hillsong Church but I detect nothing Christian about your defamatory and untrue statements about my room. I will not be welcoming any more Happy Clappy so-called Christians if you represent them! It is very sad that there are people out there who delight in twisting the truth- I have had 40 positive reviews and yours is the only negative one. People can draw their own conclusions. My website makes it clear that as a garden studio there are insects including flying cockroaches that come in and fly out in summer (rare if at all the rest of the year). My usual cleaner may have not done such a good job this once and I will ensure the toilet/basin is doubly clean in future- thanks for that feedback but I do not believe there is any truth to the rest. You declined my offer to accommodate you both upstairs in alternative premises when one such insect flew in and you freaked out- I think this says more about you as a person who likes to make trouble and refuses to take responsibility for your words and actions!

  • Peace and privacy within 5 mins walk of all that King Street offers. I stayed in this lovely studio alone, and might have found it a squeeze if I'd been with anyone else, but as a one person space it's perfect. Quite remarkably silent at night, with just the rustling of the vegetation outside. I really liked the simplicity and greenness of this space. Thanks Melissa,

  • Melissa (email hidden) and the studio was fantastic. I was in Sydney for a conference, so it was wonderful to (email hidden) to enjoy after a long day. I wish I could have stayed longer - I will definitely stay here again next time I'm in Sydney!

  • This place is amazing. Melissa is so lovely and really welcoming... plus she owns the cutest dog you'll ever meet. The studio is a converted shed hidden at the bottom of her garden, it's really cosy and has an incredible outdoor shower. It feels like you're staying in the jungle.

It's just a couple of minutes away from King Street (the main Newtown high street) and there are tons of great places to eat, shop and get coffee, plus it's only a short walk from the station and a nice park.

  • Very handy place to stay - so close to lively King Street in Newtown and St Peters station for trip to the city - and a secluded room to retreat to. I enjoyed the outdoor shower! Entry to the room is through Melissa's home but she is very relaxed and trusting which I appreciated.

  • The garden studio was a great little sanctuary to come home to after long and hectic days working in the city! Melissa and Chaska (and Mahika, the furriest resident) are warm and welcoming hosts. Although we often only saw each other briefly, Melissa made sure I was comfortable and had access to everything I needed during my stay. The bed was cosy, and after nearly 6 months on the road it was wonderful to unpack the suitcase and use the clothes rack. There is a fancy electric fan that quickly gets the air flowing on those hot summer days and ensures a more comfortable nights sleep during a humid evening. (The remote and timer is a nice touch) The outdoor shower really added to the 'exotic holiday' feel, particularly lovely on those warmer mornings, but its a good idea to take a torch for a late night wash! The wildlife is abundant, don't be surprised to hear the bats and birds chattering gently into the evening and the odd possum or cat strolling across the roof. Location is fantastic, very close to public transport, the supermarket and some excellent vintage shopping along King St and Enmore Rd! (Ps-Native Beauty on Enmore Rd do an excellent manicure/shellac...) Very grateful for the opportunity to stay with Melissa long term and am definitely looking forward to visiting again in the future! xx

  • Loved our stay here! Mel was great, very welcoming and accommodating. Amazing location as well, often choosing to go out in Newtown instead of the city

  • I stayed for 8 nights at the studio and I enjoyed my stay. I especially liked the Bali-style outdoor shower and the bamboo grove. The studio is good for one person but may be a little small for a couple. Though Melissa the host was out of town during my stay, her neighbour Ms. Coleen Fowler was very knowledgeable and helpful - she was so kind that she drove me to the airport on the day I left Sydney!

  • Everything was great! Melissa is a really nice host and the self-contain cabin at the end of the backyard has all you need!
We spent our whole weekend cruising in Newtown, which is for me one of the best area in Sydney!
    We'll stay there again!

Hi I am a singer, masseuse, yoga teacher and celebrant , travel and music are two great loves along with singing, skiing and eating ginger! I'm about to take off for Morocco and the Fez sacred music festival where I will be singing my way around with an Acapella choir and hoping to create some pop up choir performances in the bazaars( unless we get too distracted buying carpets!); also partial to massages (daily if possible!) yoga, going to the gym, meditation, swimming and listening to good music...I really enjoy meeting world travellers and helping them see Sydney in an affordable, fun way!
