About This Listing
I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place.
A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.
Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a porch, & a stairwell landing with a Japanese floor mattress that can be used as a small bedroom.
There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.
Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.
I have another listing on airbnb for a private room downstairs. If I have guests staying there (maximum of 2) while you're staying upstairs, you'll only be sharing the downstairs common area & the yard with them.
Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.
Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)
Interaction with Guests
With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.
It's quiet. Rural. There's a park right across the river with picnic tables, a basketball court (can provide a basketball), a horseshoe pitch (can provide two pairs of horseshoes), a dam, waterfall, old mill. Many characteristic gravel roads surrounding Fertile provide opportunities to get lost among low hills, cornfields & prairie. Clear Lake is only a 10 minute drive away.
No public transit. Hardly any public. Bring wheels.
Other Things to Note
Suitable for events & retreats.
You can make a bonfire in the yard.
A small breakfast of coffee & toast is included, unless you have other plans.
Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.
I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.
Guests are expected to behave courteously. Please don't break or steal my things. After midnight a reasonable quiet should reign (unless everyone agrees to the contrary). Pets aren't usually allowed, unless you don't mind keeping them in the garage. But tell me your animal situation & maybe we can figure something out. Smoking is fine...outside.
Excellent stay!! The place was full of books, music and wonder. The cats and chickens were hanging around outside. The upstairs was quaint and cozy. Kitchen downstairs was large and well-equipped. The whole space was flooded with natural light, which we strongly prefer. Nathaniel was an excellent host--interesting, thoughtful, accommodating, and gracious. And it was a total bargain for the experience. You can't beat it. We were there to unplug and got exactly what we were hoping for!!
Nathaniel's place was one of my best Air BnB surprises! It's a magical space. So tranquil and inviting. Filled with interesting things plus thousands of books. It's quiet, clean, and spacious. So unique. Nathan is the perfect host. Not intrusive, but available. A very interesting and gracious guy. I felt 100% comfortable and at home. I will definitely go out of my way to return to his converted creamery!
We got to meet Nathaniel when we arrived. Very nice host. Gave us a tour of the entire place which we were lucky to have all to ourselves. The two cats and four chickens were also just as friendly. Rob and I brought some pizza and wine and sat on the patio by the river just behind the home the entire evening until it started to storm. (Which is good b/c the closest place to get food is about 10 minutes away. Which I was prepared for, thus the bringing of the pizza and wine.) Wonderfully relaxing and soooooo clean! I have a slight cat allergy and made it through the night sleeping upstairs without a major sniffle. Nathaniel's home is eclectic and the library of books entertained us all evening. Very quiet neighborhood. Great for a relaxing getaway. We would love to visit again in the future.
Nathaniel was a great host! My aunt and I had a lovely weekend staying at the Creamery and exploring the surrounding area. It was such a great place and we are hoping to stay there again.
We felt very welcome at the Old Creamery. Nathaniel gave us a tour and we chatted about the building. He offered us eggs and coffee in the morning. The private area is very comfortable and spacious. We didn't have time to explore the area but hope to stay at the creamery again. Highly recommended.
We felt instantly welcome and had a wonderful experience staying with Nathaniel. It was the perfect relaxing retreat for us. The pictures don't do the place justice. Nathaniel's home is a gem and our host was friendly, interesting and very accommodating. We'd highly recommend staying at the creamery.
The time we had at the Creamery was everything my daughter and I were hoping for in a short getaway. It was spacious, quiet, peaceful, and full of fascinating books, art, and treasures. The sheets, towels, and cooking equipment were all of very high quality which was a treat. Nathaniel is an easygoing, pleasant host who made us feel completely at home. His description of himself as happy to chat or to let you be is certainly true. He does both with ease. Nathaniel made great suggestions of things for us to do in Mason City if we were interested (the MacNider Art Museum is worth a little side trip), but there was no pressure at all. I hope to have an excuse to return to this little gem soon!
