I've recently undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the podunk town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & full access to the downstairs. Peaceful place.
A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.
Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a porch, & a stairwell landing with a Japanese floor mattress that can be used as a small bedroom.
There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.
Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.
I have another listing on airbnb for a double bed downstairs. If there's a guest staying there while you're upstairs, they do get access to the bathroom upstairs to use the only shower in the place. But they will ask you about a good time to do so & won't come up unannounced.
Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.
Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)
Interaction with Guests
With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.
It's quiet. Rural. There's a park right across the river with picnic tables, a basketball court (can provide a basketball), a horseshoe pitch (can provide two pairs of horseshoes), a dam, waterfall, old mill. Many characteristic gravel roads surrounding Fertile provide opportunities to get lost among low hills, cornfields & prairie. Clear Lake is only a 10 minute drive away.
No public transit. Hardly any public. Bring wheels.
Other Things to Note
Suitable for events & retreats.
You can make a bonfire in the yard.
A small breakfast of coffee & toast is included, unless you have other plans.
Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.
I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.
Guests are expected to behave courteously. Please don't break or steal my things. After midnight a reasonable quiet should reign (unless everyone agrees to the contrary). Pets aren't usually allowed, unless you don't mind keeping them in the garage. But tell me your animal situation & maybe we can figure something out. Smoking is fine...outside.
Nathaniel gave us eggs from his aunt's farm and homemade sourdough. That alone is enough to get me back, but the Old Creamery is so much more.
Everything about this place is awesome. Eclectic, clean, airy, cozy, welcoming, peaceful, and just really, really cool. There's a library of books and a cozy nook around every corner, the cats are nothing short of adorable, and Nathaniel is a good a host as they come.
If you're looking for a place to get away, or are just passing through middle-of-nowhere, Iowa, get ye to the Creamery asap.
Most interesting and relaxing stay! My daughter and I stayed 1 night between college visits to Grinnell and Carleton. The accommodations and Nathaniel, the host, are as described by other reviewers. Truly extraordinary. Decor and creativity and loads of books make this a most wonderful break from the usual.
Two words describe our host and our accommodations. Those two words are 'outstanding' and 'unique'.
Nathaniel is a 'one of a kind' person and host. He is friendly, gracious, informative, and always made an attempt to go that 'extra mile'.
This two story renovated old creamery, is set beside a rushing river, complete with a patio and/or supplies for a bonfire. The guest sleeping quarters upstairs has an open atmosphere, yet felt cozy. Nathaniel's eclectic taste in decorating was like spending the weekend in a very special museum. Every nook and crannie had something different to look at. And if you cherish reading, and books, his collection of books is superb. The kitchen was well supplied with spices, teas, and other healthy items, and was truly a joy to cook in.
Overall, Nathaniel and this very unique creamery helped make a way over due, one of a kind family get together, a weekend that will be hard to ever forget.
We all thank you, very much!
Nathaniel is a most interesting host, whose life experiences I found quite fascinating. He was open to social interaction, but perfectly willing to leave us alone. Fertile is a small town, and one cannot expect to be entertained by the community goings on. But if one likes an opportunity to kick back and enjoy rural Iowa and one enjoys spending time on a lovely river, this is great.
Nathaniel is a great host, and this is a lovely and unique property – we had a perfect time. Description actually exceeded our expectations on just about every level. For example, the big six-burner gas range along with lots of quality cooking tools and sharp knives made hanging out in the large and light-filled kitchen a real pleasure. The extensive and beautifully organized book collection is remarkable – quite the library! We are so happy to have found this property and hope to be back!
This is a wonderful place. I stayed here at the end of a long day and a long drive, and I had such a restful and peaceful stay. There is plenty of privacy here, as you have the entire upstairs of the Creamery to yourself, but Nathaniel is also a friendly and welcoming host who will make you feel right at home. I would definitely stay here again.
If you have not yet read the other reviews, do so now. Not a word posted is exaggeration.
The Creamery is, in a word, Restorative. Nathaniel has created a succession of intimate, inviting corners out of a natively spacious structure, each offering a different kind of peace. And Nathaniel is a master of the gentle art of Hospitality. I doubt you will want for anything during your stay.
