About this listing
I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place.
A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.
Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a porch, & a stairwell landing with a Japanese floor mattress that could be used as a small 3rd bedroom. The 2 bedrooms are separated by a hallway, but not a door. In the large, main room you'll find a queen bed & a double bed. In the smaller room there are 2 twin beds.
There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.
Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.
I have another listing on airbnb for a private room downstairs. If I have guests staying there (maximum of 2) while you're staying upstairs, you'll only be sharing the downstairs common area & the yard with them.
Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.
Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)
Interaction with Guests
With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.
It's quiet. Rural. There's a park right across the river with picnic tables, a basketball court (can provide a basketball), a horseshoe pitch (can provide two pairs of horseshoes), a dam, waterfall, old mill. Many characteristic gravel roads surrounding Fertile provide opportunities to get lost among low hills, cornfields & prairie. Clear Lake is only a 10 minute drive away. I-90 is 20-25 minutes away, I-35 is 5 minutes away.
No public transit. Hardly any public. Bring wheels.
Other Things to Note
Suitable for events & retreats.
You can make a bonfire in the yard.
A small breakfast of coffee & toast is included, unless you have other plans.
Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.
I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.
Guests are expected to behave courteously. Please don't break or steal my things. After midnight a reasonable quiet should reign (unless everyone agrees to the contrary). Pets aren't usually allowed, unless you don't mind keeping them in the garage. But tell me your animal situation & maybe we can figure something out. Smoking is fine...outside.
Nathaniel, a great communicator, greeted and gave us a tour of his whole place which is decorated with tons of fun interesting antiques, books and kitschy thrift store finds. Our space in the upstairs part of the creamery was large and spacious with several places to nap and read books and hang out. It was very clean and comfortable and Nathaniel was a very gracious host. We highly recommend this location for anybody who wants something little more interesting than the norm. Holly
Nathaniel was an awesome host. We stayed with him for one night while on a road trip. We ended up arriving much later than originally planned, but Nathaniel was still up to welcome us and show us around his place. The loft where we stayed was clean and comfortable and gave us more than enough space. It is a very unique space and I could have spent hours just looking around at all of the books and interesting objects. Nathaniel left coffee and bagels for us in the morning.
My time at the Creamery was just what I was looking for--peaceful, clean and a time away from my busy life. Nathaniel was perfectly accommodating and even wrote out directions for a peaceful exercise route. A bonus--organic bread, butter and jam each morning! Thanks, Nathaniel!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful house. It's wonderfully renovated and the interesting details are amazing. We would love to come again!
This vacation was just what we had wanted: peace, quiet, calm, and a comfortable place to stay. Nathaniel is a generous host, and made every effort to help us feel welcome and comfortable. I've already recommended The Old Creamery to several friends and family members! Fertile is a very small town, with a lovely park set on the river. It's easy to get into Clear Lake for swimming or shopping, and just as nice to stay in and enjoy the quiet of the country. If we're traveling that way again, we would definitely stay here!
Nathaniel was a wonderful host and helped us feel welcome and at home right away. He was happy to sit and talk with us and give us a little background on the Creamery (which is an incredible place). The Creamery itself is spacious, clean, and filled with interesting furniture pieces and books (of every subject, it would seem!). We stayed in the upstairs loft and had plenty of privacy. I would highly recommend staying here, we probably will again!
Upstairs of the Old Creamery was one of our favorite stays in our three week western vacation. Nathaniel was a gracious host, warmly inviting us into his home. This home was, by far, one of the most interesting, comfortable, relaxing places we've stayed. Not only were the bedrooms comfortable, but Nathaniel also welcomed us to use the kitchen to cook dinner and to enjoy the beautiful Iowa countryside in his backyard and gardens. We would recommend Upstairs of the Old Creamery whole-heartedly! Thank you, Nathaniel!
