About this listing
I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place.
A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.
Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a porch, & a stairwell landing with a Japanese floor mattress that could be used as a small 3rd bedroom. The 2 bedrooms are separated by a hallway, but not a door. In the large, main room you'll find a queen bed & a double bed. In the smaller room there are 2 twin beds.
There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.
Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.
I have another listing on airbnb for a private room downstairs. If I have guests staying there (maximum of 2) while you're staying upstairs, you'll only be sharing the downstairs common area & the yard with them.
Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.
Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)
Interaction with Guests
With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.
It's quiet. Rural. There's a park right across the river with picnic tables, a basketball court (can provide a basketball), a horseshoe pitch (can provide two pairs of horseshoes), a dam, waterfall, old mill. Many characteristic gravel roads surrounding Fertile provide opportunities to get lost among low hills, cornfields & prairie. Clear Lake is only a 10 minute drive away. I-90 is 20-25 minutes away, I-35 is 5 minutes away.
No public transit. Hardly any public. Bring wheels.
Other Things to Note
Suitable for events & retreats.
You can make a bonfire in the yard.
A small breakfast of coffee & toast is included, unless you have other plans.
Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.
I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.
Guests are expected to behave courteously. Please don't break or steal my things. After midnight a reasonable quiet should reign (unless everyone agrees to the contrary). Pets aren't usually allowed, unless you don't mind keeping them in the garage. But tell me your animal situation & maybe we can figure something out. Smoking is fine...outside.
We rented the upstairs of the creamery for our anniversary and we loved it because it was spacious, comfortable and cozy. The building is beautiful with cool bohemian touches. It was a quiet getaway from the city, exactly what we needed. Nathaniel was a great host who was available when we needed him but otherwise gave us our space. Widely recommended!
The Creamery was the best stay on our cross-country trip this August. We were incredibly fortunate to stumble upon this hidden gem of a spot and Nathaniel's gracious hospitality. The home is beautifully appointed with unique furnishings and a vast collection of excellent reads. There's a great calm energy in this wonderful home. We're already looking forward to a return visit with family & friends to share the experience of this special place. Fertile, Iowa for the win! Thanks again, Nathaniel.
Of all our travels, we have never stayed in a more unique, inviting space that left us loving the place we booked more than the place we chose to visit! Nathaniel has created a home in which we were both surprised and felt instantly comfortable. We added an additional guest at the last minute and Nathaniel made accommodations possible with no trouble. He built us a bonfire one night and felt like an old friend from the first day!
As soon as we settled in, we were already thinking ahead to when we could come back, simply to enjoy the home. My daughters enjoyed the piano and his cats, and my mom was thrilled with the giant kitchen complete with commercial stove and grill top for cooking. We sat around one of several tables in the evening and played games. We were all impressed with the numerous bookshelves and cozy corners designed for reading pleasure.
This charming, spacious home has something for everyone and interesting finds throughout that will have you sharing stories of your stay with all your friends, and if you are anything like us, planning your next getaway to this fascinating place with a welcoming and kind host!
Perfect, perfect, perfect!
We had a girls weekend that felt like a nostalgic slumber party! We were all able to sleep in the same space upstairs of the creamery. The place was warmly decorated and felt very homey! Nathaniel's sense of design is impeccable, right out of an Anthropologie magazine!
Nathaniel made us pizza one night (we requested it ahead of time) which was amazing and he built us a small bonfire where we could hang out (also requested ahead of time). He was around and participated with our group but also kept to himself. It really felt like we had the place to ourselves which was just what we were looking for! We were able to spend a day at Clear Lake which a great spot to recreate in the area!
I have already raved about this get-away to many and will continue to recommend it to anyone looking to stay in Northern Iowa.
We had a wonderful stay in Nathaniel's charming home. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with warmth. The room we stayed in was large and had a nice bathroom. The decor was amazing and we loved looking through his incredible library. Nathaniel made us a pizza and salad for dinner for a small fee. Everything was organic and the veggies were fresh from his garden. It was a welcome home cooked meal throughout our week long road trip through the midwest. We were able to listen to records and enjoy cocktails in his garden and also in his living area. The morning brought farm fresh eggs for breakfast, tea, coffee, and delicious bread and jam. We hope that we get to travel back to this lovely retreat. Nathaniel was also very friendly, but offered to make himself scarce if we desired. We enjoyed his company though! A truly unique experience.
Nathaniel, a great communicator, greeted and gave us a tour of his whole place which is decorated with tons of fun interesting antiques, books and kitschy thrift store finds. Our space in the upstairs part of the creamery was large and spacious with several places to nap and read books and hang out. It was very clean and comfortable and Nathaniel was a very gracious host. We highly recommend this location for anybody who wants something little more interesting than the norm. Holly
Staying at Nathaniel's home in the old creamery was a unique highlight to the cross country trip my friend and I started in July. We would have never pegged Fertile, Iowa as one of our destinations but when we saw his listing we were intrigued and engaged.
The pictures don't do the home justice- it is comfortable and inviting with a dash of eccentricity. The building has nooks and crannies that Nathaniel has filled with character pieces and books.
As a host, he went above and beyond-- greeting with cold beers and fixing snacks for us travel-weary folk. He spent the greater portion of the evening leafing through the atlas with us, referencing guidebooks and talking shop about his own travel experiences.
The old creamery stay and our conversation with Nathaniel was memorable. Thanks to him for the hospitality and to AirBnb for fostering such connections and stays.
