About This Listing
I've undertaken the project of fixing up & living in this old creamery building on the Winnebago River in the rural town of Fertile. Guests can have the spacious upstairs to themselves & pass time in the common areas downstairs. Peaceful place.
A historical building curated in an artistic manner with an emphasis on relaxation & reflection. Still rough around the edges, but clean & inspiring. Extensive & eclectic library of books for guests to read.
Upstairs (where your accommodations will be) has 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a porch, & a stairwell landing with a Japanese floor mattress that could be used as a small 3rd bedroom. The 2 bedrooms are separated by a hallway, but not a door. In the large, main room you'll find a queen bed & a double bed. In the smaller room there are 2 twin beds.
There is a lock on the door to the upstairs to give you extra peace of mind.
Downstairs is comprised of 3 living rooms, 1 bedroom, & the kitchen.
I have another listing on airbnb for a private room downstairs. If I have guests staying there (maximum of 2) while you're staying upstairs, you'll only be sharing the downstairs common area & the yard with them.
Everywhere except my bedroom downstairs.
Includes everything kitchen-related (bring your own provisions, unless we've discussed meals in advance)
Interaction with Guests
With guests present, I stay downstairs & often make myself scarce. I am around, however, & often available. I enjoy both good company & solitude. Guests should feel free to mention it if they'd prefer to be left alone.
It's quiet. Rural. There's a park right across the river with picnic tables, a basketball court (can provide a basketball), a horseshoe pitch (can provide two pairs of horseshoes), a dam, waterfall, old mill. Many characteristic gravel roads surrounding Fertile provide opportunities to get lost among low hills, cornfields & prairie. Clear Lake is only a 10 minute drive away.
No public transit. Hardly any public. Bring wheels.
Other Things to Note
Suitable for events & retreats.
You can make a bonfire in the yard.
A small breakfast of coffee & toast is included, unless you have other plans.
Dinner can be arranged for a small surcharge & with sufficient notice.
I'm licensed to perform sudden or premeditated weddings.
Guests are expected to behave courteously. Please don't break or steal my things. After midnight a reasonable quiet should reign (unless everyone agrees to the contrary). Pets aren't usually allowed, unless you don't mind keeping them in the garage. But tell me your animal situation & maybe we can figure something out. Smoking is fine...outside.
Awesome! Nathaniel is a great guy and made us feel quite welcome. Very cool eclectic place, very clean, plenty of privacy for guests.
Nethaniel and the Creamery were an amazing, inspirational destination for our family! Nethaniel couldn't have been more accommodating, and Fertile couldn't have been more beautiful. Despite being there only one night, we left refreshed and rejuvenated. In fact we spent the entire trip home talking about planning our next trip - perhaps an artist's weekend surrounded by books, chickens, and great company??
What a unique house. If you are looking for a unique experience in a cute quiet small town this is the place to stay. This home has so much history and character. This would be a great place for a get away weekend. Nate was super friendly and easy to work with. The house was clean and beautiful. The nearby park and waterfall are great places to explore with the family.
This was my first time ever using Airbnb, and can't say enough wonderful things about how pleased we were. I was traveling solo with my three young kids, and we loudly showed up at the door, making our presence certainly known. Nathaniel greeted us in a wonderful welcoming manner and showed us around the home. We were all in awe of the beauty of the inside. This is the most tastefully decorated home I have ever seen. He has paid careful attention to every little detail and it is so comfortable and warm.
Nathaniel was so sweet and patient with my kids, answering any questions they had and even providing them with some entertainment. Such fond memories of chasing the chickens, petting the cats and using the instruments to their hearts delights.
The beds were cozy, with the most luxurious sheets I've ever used. The shower was amazing . Coffee and breakfast both mornings. The Fresh eggs were delicious.
We can't wait to come back. Thank you for your hospitality!
Nathaniel was a most welcoming host. He made sure we were comfortable in every way. Three of us, my husband, grandaughter and I had the entire upstairs to ourselves along with the use of kitchen and living areas on main floor. The private garden in the back, next to the river, is peaceful and a great place to sit and enjoy nature, the chickens and the cats. Nathaniel's home is so cleverly decorated with books and many interesting vintage objects. Books, nooks, crannies and charm galore. The old creamery is more than a resting stop from here to there...it is a destination.
The creamery was incredible and our host was great! The building and surroundings are beautiful and it was a quiet, peaceful, and perfect place to take a break from our long road trip. Right off the interstate but a million miles away! Definitely recommend it!
