Welcome to beautiful Beaver Island! A pristine natural environment, a warm friendly community rich in history. Enjoy your quiet, lovely home base, for hiking, beach combing, biking, exploring, music, history, culture, friendship and solitude.
Tara's Meadow lies in the quiet heart of nature, on a beautiful Island in Great Lake Michigan. Beaver Isle is ringed with sandy fresh water beaches and white sand dunes, enchanting forests, and quiet hiking trails. The historic Island community of Native American and Irish settlers offers a warm welcome to all guests, and a multitude of summer opportunities (music festivals, biking and birding trails, museums, cultural events, history and nature tours of the Island.)
UNIQUE CEDAR HOME NESTLED IN THE WOODS. Your guest room offers a comfortable full size bed, closet and dresser, with private entrance to the forest. Shared kitchen space, living room, full bath, and outdoor deck are downstairs; with a beautiful tree-top meditation room upstairs and a small balcony overlooking the forest. We also have a beautiful new spacious Geodesic Dome (10' high and 20' diameter) in the forest, for those preferring the magic of forest solitude in a comfortable camping space, complete with its dancing tree shadows, wind and wild animal sounds, and its comfortable new futon bed for two (ample extra floor space is available in the dome.)
Your home-base is fully in the quiet of nature with no electronic distractions. We offer all the basic comforts, and in this cell phone and internet-free zone our guests are often greeted in the evening with the calls of the owl; or Sand hill cranes, a solitary loon, and wind through the trees in the morning. A land line is available with unlimited phone minutes for calls in the Continental US (calls outside of Continental U.S., however, must be made from town, or paid for by guests.) Guests can travel 20 minutes to the charming Island town of St James for dinners out on Paradise Bay, and use of the free wi-fi services and computers at the library or the Community Center during the day.
IMMEDIATE GROUNDS & ENVIRONS Your stay includes access to 80 acres of field and forest, along with the use of our ceremonial stone circle. Visitors may enjoy a nearby Nature Conservancy marsh and interpretive trail, an inland lake and ancient oak grove, and a trail through State Forest Land to a pristine Lake Michigan beachfront wilderness shoreline. All are within a one-mile radius of your Tara's Meadow home base.
CAR & BIKE RENTALS Guests provide their own transportation on the Island from our quiet home base to and from town (it's 10 miles in to the grocery store, Library & Wi Fi, Community Center, Museums, etc.) You can rent a car or bicycle on the Island, or you may pay to ferry your own car and/or bicycle over to the Island.
FERRY OR AIRPLANE TO THE ISLAND The Beaver Island Boat Company provides transportation for passengers and their vehicles between the Island and the mainland. Two passenger airlines are also available for transportation back and forth.
Your host Seamus Norgaard is a college professor of history and the environment, and enjoys sharing his knowledge of both the human and natural history of Beaver Island. You may contact him and contract for extra services, including expert Island tours and trail hiking, "Life Threshold" life-coaching services, or instruction in "Celtic Body Prayers" movement meditations on site. Or you may simply enjoy the beauty of our space, with as little or as much quiet, or conversation, as you wish.
There is an Island transit service that can be called to arrange rides, most days from 8 - 5 pm. Alternately guests can pay to bring their own vehicle or bicycle over on the ferry, or rent these while on the Island.
