Westport town only 7 Km away. Best town in Ireland for family shops of character, variety and quality; high quality, reasonably-priced restaurants and cafes. Farm produce at weekly market. Excellent pubs, with lots of music, traditional and all varieties. The most famous Westport pub is probably Matt Molloy's, (of Chieftains fame). Or have a wonderful day in Westport House! Lots of indoor activities, including the Leisure Centre and the cinema.. All in all, the perfect place to stay!
It's a fundamental ethic for me, that guests of any culture or nationality, and of any religion or none are all equally welcome in my houseApart from the bedroom and adjacent bathroom, which is for guests' exclusive use, guests will have access, by arrangement, to the kitchen / dining area, plus a small middle area or "sun-room".. most guests like to leave the house in the morning and return in the evening...and often to head out for a meal, or a music session a little later.. access to the sun -room is available for short--periods, but not really for day-long or other long periods... the house is too open-plan for that to work well..
Interaction with guests
I hope I am friendly and helpful, and I have been told that I am, which is nice...and I definitely like to have some conversation with guests, but I have learned that it is not possible to be totally personally available for long conversations with all guests only because that is impossible to sustain..
If guests are using the kitchen, (by prior arrangement), I like for us all to arrange times when we would like to cook.. so that guests have the kitchen to themselves for their meal and, either before or after that, I can cook separately in my own time as well..
Most people have cars.. the house is about 7 Km from the town. Some guests tavel to Westport by train and use taxis to get to and from the house...Cost varies depending on time of day/ night.. around €8-12 is the usual price for a taxi to drop guests out to the house, or to collect them..
With a car, well, the whole west of Ireland is at your feet...
Head North to Achill, Mulranny, Keem Bay (and the quirky Achill-henge!). Further north to Belmullet and the nearby wonderful Céide Fields.. (reportedly the most extensive Neolithic site in the World..) and the sea-stack and blow-holes of Downpatrick Head.there is also the National Park in Ballycroy..
Or South to Leenane, Letterfrack, Kylemore, Clifden and Connemara.. and West to Louisburgh and Roonagh, to get the ferry to Clare Island, Inisboffin or Inishturk. east to Castlebar, with the Museum of Country Life, Foxford with its Woollen Mills and shop.. calling in to the Davitt Museum en route.... Ballina (homeplace of Former President and "Elder", Mrs. Mary Robinson) with its famous salmon fishing, excellent art galleries and Jacki Clarke Museum... There are cycle paths, sea trips( kayaking, fishing ), surfing, horse riding, and much more! Mayo has plenty for everyone!
Other things to note
Given enough notice, I can arrange art classes for groups of eight to ten people.. and can sort out accommodation for all.. two people in my double room and others elsewhere locally.. Classes will be given by well-known artist Breda Burns.. a great artist and a great teacher.. I know, because I've been at her (beginner!) classes!
Breakfast (museli, yoghourt, brown bread, fruit juice, tea and coffee) from 8.00am to 10.00am. No smoking throughout the house. Please remove outdoor shoes when inside. You will be free to make yourself a cup of coffee or tea. Please respect host privacy, just as yours will be respected, too... No noise after midnight..., unless I'm involved! and please, no food / eating in the bedroom.. :) Thanks..
Please do not leave Velux windows open in bedroom and bathroom , a) when you are not in the room, and b) overnight.. This is because rain can start suddenly and can fall quite heavily without warning and falls straight onto the floor; It will soak and damage the floorboards very quickly.
A camp bed is available, on request, for one child /adult to use in the same bedroom, for an additional fee.
Bank Holiday weekends/Bookings for a whole week..The Airbnb standardised pricing system for weekly bookings ends on Sundays.. For Bank Holiday weekends, booking can be made, by arrangement and agreement about any additional cost, for departure on Monday or Tuesday.. :)
Generally, I am there during guests' stays, though sometimes I might be away.. If you wish to have the house to yourselves, that can be arranged, and we can come to an agreement regarding costs.. Flexibility is key! :)
Hi. I'm looking forward to having you to stay as a guest, but I'm not mad about too much sharing of personal information online.. I will certainly make you very welcome, and will try to make your stay in the Westport area a really memorable one.. I love books, theatre and all kinds of music, and really enjoy live gigs.. some of the recent gigs I was at were Ane Brun .. fantastic.., Philip Glass, Tomasz Stanko as well as Dave Liebman, jazz saxophonist; I've been to Electric Picnic a number of time, looking forward to another edition in September.. saw Keith Jarrett a couple of years ago; I've seen Radiohead four times .. my favourite band, well,.. apart from Beck, Sigur Ros and Elbow, that is! I've seen them all , as well... Heading to St. Vincent gig in Galway next week.. and Montreux Jazz Festival, too! (July 2015)
A Motto? well., how about "the only reason we are here is to connect with other people"? or "the day I grow up is the day I know I'm dead.."? See you soon!
