Los Angeles Retro w/ View!

Camper/RV - Entire home/apt · Phelps Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90032, United States

Our beautiful 1955 Kenskill camper is lodged up the walk from our house. It features it's own kitchenette, recently purchased double mattress, travel shower, toilet, mini fridge, and gas stove. Who knew camping indoors could be so much fun?

The Space

Staying in the camper is a unique experience. When you enter, you feel like you have stepped into a time machine, only with the modern convenience of WiFi. Our guests love the privacy, although we are always happy to offer local recommendations. We've had friends and family stay for months or just over night.

We provide oversized towels, cozy bedding, self serve coffee and your choice of cow, soy or rice milk. Use of laundry and detergent is included.

We have a large deck with a view of The Sierra Madre Mountains and the surrounding hills. It's perfect for sunning yourself, surfing the web, or enjoying a meal.

One flight down, our patio has a gas light charcoal grill. Surrounded by christmas lights, there are potted plants, tables, and chairs. It's charming in the morning for breakfast and even nicer at magic hour. I like to garden, so you never know what might be in bloom - English roses, geraniums, or fresh rosemary.

YOU GET:
A true mid century modern experience.
A deck with a view.
Your own private space.
Private bathroom with shower and toilet.
A great location for business or pleasure near Downtown, Hollywood, or Pasadena.
A flower lined patio with gas start charcoal bbq.

My local recommendations.
I'm happy to make reservations for you at local restaurants.

Kitchen is stocked with:
Coffee, tea, milk or soy/rice milk,
electric kettle, dishes, pots and pans,
cloth napkins, and silverware.

Guest Access

Laundry, deck, patio, grill, wifi throughout property.

Interaction with Guests

We live down the walk from the camper, so if you need anything just give me a call. Other than that, it really depends on the guest. We've had guests who we barely saw and others who joined us for dinner.

The Neighborhood

Lincoln Heights is a family focused, working class neighborhood. It's not Beverly Hills, but it is comfortable and the real LA. You won't see much plastic surgery or pretentious wannabees.

We're one 'hood over from Highland Park - the new hipster barrio where you can enjoy browsing funky cafes, shops, and bars on York blvd. and watch the world go by. Don't miss the second Saturday Art Walk! It's a blast and (generally) dddfree entertainment.

Our property is close enough to the galleries, shopping and nightlife of downtown and Little Tokyo to take surface roads. We're close to the amazing Huntington Gardens, Library and Galleries in San Marino.

Getting around

We're walking distance to a bus stop, super market, restaurants and shops, although I'd recommend a car - it's L.A., baby! 20 minutes drive to Hollywood, 30 minutes drive to LAX and Santa Monica. Nearby (phone number hidden), and 710 freeways are convenient to get most anywhere.

Other Things to Note

Our camper is t.v. free, but has an awesome dvd collection, so bring your laptop computer and enjoy!

  • Had a great and comfortable stay. Very private and peaceful oasis in the middle of town.

  • Tema is more than a host, she's a friend. Her, her husband and her adorable kid treated us so well, we will always remember our time there. I recommend her place to anybody.

  • It's always a pleasure to see Tema and her family! We had a spectacular weekend and were invited to a party held on their amazing deck! I can't wait to come back and visit again, it's our favorite place to stay in LA.

  • Tema is ultra hip and cool. She was always extremely helpful whether I needed help with navigating L.A. traffic, finding a restaurant or anything else. Her garden and deck is wonderful I spend a lot of time out there with my laptop enjoying the amazing LA weather. I was actually there for a month and it worked out great.

  • Had a great time in this cute trailer. It had everything we needed; bed, shower, kitchen. Tema was welcoming and cool. She left us plenty of tips for things to do in LA. We soon understood that you need a car i LA, walking distance doesn't exist.

  • We were looking for a quick beach getaway for the tail end of our 6 year old daughter's Spring Break. Imagine our amazement when we received Tema's friendly response stating that, not only was her camper kid-friendly but she also has a 6 year old daughter! How serendipitous! The Sunshine Camper was situated in an accessible, funky little neighborhood that was easy to find. Tema and her family have built a little piece of paradise in El Sereno. The deck and garden took our breath away and the camper was beautiful, not to mention VERY user friendly. Tema gave us an informative tour and made us feel very welcome. Our daughters, both first graders, had lots in common and played well. On our first morning there, Tema brought coffee, fresh bread, artisan cheese, fruit and jam out for us on the deck. It was an incredible breakfast. It was enriched more so by the stories Tema and her daughter shared about one of their favorite bakery's which provided the bread. The bakery called, Homeboy, helps to rehabilitate youth who are former gang members. This is a truly humble and cool family. Tema is so well-versed in everything that surrounds her city and makes it fun for a visitor to share in her knowledge. From Hollywood to old Pasadena to the beaches, this central location has it all! One final act of kindness on our visit was Tema's excellent recommendation for authentic dim sum. Upon our return home we also received sweet pictures of our family taken by Tema’s awesome little daughter. Can it get any better?! We will be back to visit the Sunshine Camper soon!

  • Locartion, hosts and environment superb.
Tema above and beyond! MUCH FOOD AND DRINK SHOICES ALREADY IN THE CAMPER. Zoe delightful, Invite to breakfast and pancakes delivered to doorstep.

Would have been nice to have clean windows and screens, very scruffy,
no toaster, no micro and no tv!
heater barely adequate to reduce chill on coolest nights but would have frozen without it.
If visiting again would have taken the alternate rental.
Still, she and husband did all they could to make us comfortalbe and welcome. Good people

    Response from Tema:

It was a pleasure having John and Rachel stay with us. They are super sweet and fun to chat with. Lovers of art, poetry and music, I knew they were our kind of people when they readily excepted the LA County Museum ticket comps I offered them.

At first, I was a little concerned about John's health when I saw all the oxygen, but they seemed comfortable and well when I inquired and spent most of their time in the camper. We appreciated the addition of the toaster and microwave, even though most guests come to our 1955 camper to enjoy the authentic experience (but with plumbing, electricity, hot water, gas stove, and wifi). Most folks also use their computers to take advantage of our dvd collection, wifi and outdoor space. I only wish John and Rachel were here in spring (not winter) when the garden is in full crazy bloom - I think they would get a kick out of it!

I hope that we see them again, as they are delightful. I do think the studio is a better situation for elders, especially as there are no stairs and parking spot right there, as well as a t.v. and the creature comforts of a traditional kitchen.

  • My wife and I had a great time staying here. The deck is perfect for a morning coffee with majestic views of the neighborhood. Ascot park is right down the street and features a challenging hike to keep you in shape. Tema was an amazing hostess and we would definitely stay here again.

  • It wasn't a very easy night. The camper is adorable and so well designed.
But, it was New Year's eve and all night there were fireworks going off and then dogs barking at the fireworks so we didn't sleep well. Was it the bed or the noise? Probably both, but it wasn't a great experience.

About
Originally from the East Coast (NJ, NY, Boston) I'm a Production Designer and I teach Art Direction (backgrounds and props for movies). My husband is a props and fine art fabricator - originally from New Zealand. We've both been in LA over 10 years and love it! I love to garden and cook. My husband loves to tinker and surf the web. We have a mellow first grader who loves to draw and dance. We mostly keep to ourselves in order to give you privacy, however, we're happy to give you recommendations for stuff to do: museums, eateries, farmers markets, and local gems that aren't in guide books. My cell is always on, so if you need anything while you're staying with us I'm only a text, email, or whisper away. We're omnivores, but are used to vegan and vegetarian diets as our good friends all seem to be vegan, lactose intolerant, or gluten free. We know where to get what you want for your special diet, or can make a quick phone call to find out! Having travelled quite a bit, I've always preferred b and b's to stale, boring chains. Why stay in a cookie cutter hotel when you can stay somewhere local and meet fun people? Total local immersion makes a trip that much more memorable. We hope that you'll enjoy your stay with us.
