Los Angeles Retro w/ View!

Camper/RV - Entire home/apt · Phelps Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90032, United States

Our beautiful 1955 Kenskill camper is lodged up the walk from our house. It features it's own kitchenette, recently purchased double mattress, travel shower, toilet, mini fridge, and gas stove. Who knew camping indoors could be so much fun?

The Space

Staying in the camper is a unique experience. When you enter, you feel like you have stepped into a time machine, only with the modern convenience of WiFi. Our guests love the privacy, although we are always happy to offer local recommendations. We've had friends and family stay for months or just over night.

We provide oversized towels, cozy bedding, self serve coffee and your choice of cow, soy or rice milk. Use of laundry and detergent is included.

We have a large deck with a view of The Sierra Madre Mountains and the surrounding hills. It's perfect for sunning yourself, surfing the web, or enjoying a meal.

One flight down, our patio has a gas light charcoal grill. Surrounded by christmas lights, there are potted plants, tables, and chairs. It's charming in the morning for breakfast and even nicer at magic hour. I like to garden, so you never know what might be in bloom - English roses, geraniums, or fresh rosemary.

Interaction with Guests

We live down the walk from the camper, so if you need anything just give me a call. Other than that, it really depends on the guest. We've had guests who we barely saw and others who joined us for dinner.

The Neighborhood

Lincoln Heights is a family focused, working class neighborhood. It's not Beverly Hills, but it is comfortable and the real LA. You won't see much plastic surgery or pretentious wannabees.

We're one 'hood over from Highland Park - the new hipster barrio where you can enjoy browsing funky cafes, shops, and bars on York blvd. and watch the world go by. Don't miss the second Saturday Art Walk! It's a blast and (generally) dddfree entertainment.

Our property is close enough to the galleries, shopping and nightlife of downtown and Little Tokyo to take surface roads. We're close to the amazing Huntington Gardens, Library and Galleries in San Marino.

Getting around

We're walking distance to a bus stop, super market, restaurants and shops, although I'd recommend a car - it's L.A., baby! 20 minutes drive to Hollywood, 30 minutes drive to LAX and Santa Monica. Nearby (phone number hidden), and 710 freeways are convenient to get most anywhere.

Other Things to Note

Our camper is t.v. free, but has an awesome dvd collection, so bring your laptop computer and enjoy!

  • Had a great and comfortable stay. Very private and peaceful oasis in the middle of town.

  • Tema is more than a host, she's a friend. Her, her husband and her adorable kid treated us so well, we will always remember our time there. I recommend her place to anybody.

  • My visit to the Sunshine Trailer last week was my second in as many weeks, and it was another great experience! I stayed for seven nights this time, and was sad to leave. The Sunshine Trailer is such a comfortable place to stay...even when it's raining, as it was for most of my stay. Tema brought a little heater to the trailer which helped break the morning chill, she also came over at 3am (both she and I were up, so it's not like she disrupted a night of sleep) to help set up a guest bed in the trailer for a friend who stayed over. It was just so above and beyond the call of duty, and I don't think I adequately expressed my appreciation. So here you go Tema - for the world to see - THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT!

I highly recommend the Sunshine Trailer for both the experience of staying in a vintage trailer and just the lovely atmosphere that Tema and her family have created, and continue to create around it.

  • Tema was great from the initial tour (with Zoe!) to being responsive. If you want a break from the standard hotel room, this is your place. Small but comfy, the trailer is fun. The garden is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you Tema for a unique experience! I enjoyed it and appreciated the suggestions to the Mexican restaurant (yum!).

  • Oh my, how can I express how wonderful the Sunshine Trailer is? I'm a frequent traveler to LA and felt both at home and as if I was on a great adventure while staying there. Tema was a gracious and kind host. She spent time with me to help me orient to her part of LA - suggesting food trucks, coffee shops, restaurants and events that might be of interest to me on my trip. She also invited me to have a Thanksgiving celebration with her (obviously I was there on Thanksgiving, it wasn't just some random invitation), which was exceptionally kind.

I highly recommend a visit to the trailer - if you have a fantasy of traveling back in time (as I do), it's just the perfect place!

  • Staying in the Retro trailer was such a great experience! I staid in LA for school reasons, and it was a perfect retreat to study during the day (and also great to study on the beautiful deck with picturesque views). And for the evenings, it is in the perfect location for driving to downtown or Pasadena (my favorite). And don't forget it's also a close drive to Hollywood and Santa Monica!
Tema (and her husband and adorable daughter) were fantastic hosts and made sure that my stay was comfortable and that I was enjoying my time. They were always happy to help me with anything (even when I locked myself out of the trailer by mistake haha). Definitely had the time of my life!

  • Tema is super-friendly and has lots of great suggestions in the area. She was always prompt in getting back to me and made me feel at home. The trailer is a cute, secluded spot, and the views from the deck are just lovely! A great place to get some work done and relax, or a good base camp for visits to nearby neighborhoods!

  • Tema's Sunshine Trailer suited us to a T for our stay in LA. The trailer itself is lovely, but our favourite part was the adjacent patio with views of the surrounding hills -- an especially beautiful spot to relax at night with a glass of wine. The location is great -- only a short jaunt to downtown or Hollywood or wherever the day takes you. She's also compiled a great list of local bars, restaurants and sightseeing, which we unfortunately barely made a dent in. Highly recommended! Great place, great host!

  • Great little place to get away. Good view of the mountains and nice shade. It's a bit toasty in there during the heat of Los Angeles summer days, but nights aren't bad at all. The shower is a bit small, but you knew that when you rented a trailer. She's a great host and it's local to a lot of good places.

  • If you're looking for a unique stay in an un-touristed part of LA, this old-style little trailer in the El Sereno area would be a good bet. Although compact, the wood-lined trailer has everything you need; kitchenette, seating area, WC, etc. Like very well appointed camping!

It was nice sitting out on the patio in the morning and evening taking in the views of the surrounding hills.

Tema and family were very welcoming and helpful hosts, with tips for restaurants and sightseeing in the area.

Originally from the East Coast (NJ, NY, Boston) I'm a Production Designer and I teach Art Direction (backgrounds and props for movies). My husband is a props and fine art fabricator - originally from New Zealand. We've both been in LA over 10 years and love it! I love to garden and cook. My husband loves to tinker and surf the web. We have a mellow first grader who loves to draw and dance. We mostly keep to ourselves in order to give you privacy, however, we're happy to give you recommendations for stuff to do: museums, eateries, farmers markets, and local gems that aren't in guide books. My cell is always on, so if you need anything while you're staying with us I'm only a text, email, or whisper away. We're omnivores, but are used to vegan and vegetarian diets as our good friends all seem to be vegan, lactose intolerant, or gluten free. We know where to get what you want for your special diet, or can make a quick phone call to find out! Having travelled quite a bit, I've always preferred b and b's to stale, boring chains. Why stay in a cookie cutter hotel when you can stay somewhere local and meet fun people? Total local immersion makes a trip that much more memorable. We hope that you'll enjoy your stay with us.
