Interaction with Guests
Our niece, Rocio, speaks Spanish, Quechua and English and will meet you at the apartment to give you the keys. Rocio also offers services which include airport transportation ($15) and help with tours- prices are negotiable with her. Contact her at (email hidden)
There is a quaint park across from the apartment and a market nearby on Saturdays.
It is easy to get a taxi in front of the apartment. Also we have a secure garage to park one car.
Please be mindful of the neighbors by keeping the noise down at night, and not having an unreasonable amount of guests.
This was the perfect place for myself and my travel companions. We were well enough away from the center to relax at the end of our adventures during each day and not too far that going into center was too high a cost. 5 sole for a taxi or a 20 minute walk. The neighborhood was quiet and low key. Roccio met us on arrival and provided all the information she had to give. She also introduced us to coca leaves and the tea you drink to combat high altitude!
The entire home is cold at night or if it's cold outside, but this is the norm for pretty much the entire town. It's not a bad thing, more of a cultural difference. Be prepared for the high altitude and weather that comes with it. The bedding will keep you very warm.
This beautiful apartment exceeded all of my expectations.
First off, communication with Jan was quick and easy. Jan's niece, Rocio, met me at the apartment and spent some extra time to give me travel tips and ideas around the city. I ended up taking her advice and found a really amazing little cevicheria :)
Second, I really enjoyed the neighborhood. There was a little park/plaza right outside of the apartment, and I was very happy to have a peaceful space that wasn't right in the middle of main plaza (discotecs can get pretty loud). I found that the walk to the main plaza took about 30 minutes, while a taxi took about 5 minutes. I mostly chose to walk however, as I enjoyed strolling down the "avenida del sol".
Finally, the interior of the apartment is very spacious and beautifully designed. With all of the available amenities and the homey feel, I would have loved to stay for more than just a couple of days. Cusco does get cold during the night, but I found that the available space heaters provided ample heat for a cozy experience :)
Overall, I highly recommend this space. If I am lucky enough to return to Cusco, I will definitely book this space.
Pros: apartment is spacious and secure with well-equipped complete kitchen. Adequate hot water in the bathrooms. Owner's niece speaks English and provided good advice about what to do and see in Cusco.
Cons: Apartment is a full 35-45 minute walk from the plaza at a brisk pace. Apartment was very cold (we were there in January). We were expecting to be able to do a full load of laundry, but we were told not to use the machine at first, and then told that maybe we could just use it for "a very small load." The apartment had not been completely cleaned before our arrival. We did not ask for an airport pick up, but owner's niece met us at the airport and then charged us USD 15.00, which is quite excessive since a taxi ride should cost 4-5 soles (a third of her personal charge).
This place has a lot of potential as place to stay in Peru. The apartment is beautiful and clean. That being said, if you are going to use this place make sure to get good directions. The address is incomplete so we drove for an hour with our taxi driver trying to find the place. Because we were going to be traveling around we tried to make sure to give ample time for communicating but we did not get a response until much closer to our stay. So it should be known that that is a possibility if you are planning on traveling around Peru or being in an area without internet.
The apartment is very spacious and a good value for the price. That said, unfortunately this wasn't our best Airbnb experience.
The host was responsive when I first booked. However, she was slow to respond regarding the checkin process the week we were arriving - which was challenging since I had very limited access to wifi. Also, upon arrival, we informed the host that the address was incomplete, which made it difficult for our taxi driver to find the apartment and that there was no toilet paper or towels - I still haven't heard back from her. There also was little heat - 1 of the 2 space heaters ran out of gas.
When we asked the guy who checked us in about local places to eat or a market to buy food he said there might be something a few blocks away, but he wasn't sure (there wasn't). While it certainly isn't a requirement for Airbnb hosts to provide maps or information about the surrounding neighborhood, it's always a nice touch. From what we finally found on our own, it was a long walk or taxi ride away to get to anything.
On a positive note, the security guard was a super sweet older gentleman that brightened our day each time we saw him.
Again, this apartment was a great value for the size and maybe the host is just having a bad month and couldn't respond to us.
About the Host, Jan
Living in Portland, OR with my Peruvian husband. We occasionally use our apartment in Cusco to visit family, but would love to share it with you when we are not around.
