About this listing

Affectionately known as "Candyland," this wildly imaginative showplace is San Francisco's most colorful and creative custom loft. Decorated with floor-to-ceiling eye candy collected in my exotic world travels, this is no cookie cutter loft. It was the showcase home on the SF Loft Tour and has been featured on HGTV and Ultimate Kitchens on The Food Network. Every inch of it is photo-worthy and you will truly have a "live like local" experience when you stay here.

The space

This place is ideal for tech execs - great internet and multiple places where you can set up your laptop. (I personally use the 1950's diner booth as my desk, but there are regular desks as well, including the two side-by-side orange desks downstairs.)

You will take more photos here than of the Golden Gate Bridge!

Ideal for non-smoking corporate creatives, tech execs, urban hipsters, or world travelers who would like to experience the creativity of San Francisco in the hotbed of SOMA (South of Market), this hidden gem is a wildly imaginative showplace featured on HGTV and Ultimate Kitchens on The Food Network.

One-of-a-kind custom built-ins abound, including a 1950's retro diner booth breakfast nook, sun-drenched with 17' floor-to-ceiling windows, and an original mural by acclaimed San Francisco street artist Brian Barneclo. There are delightful surprises around every corner.
"Candyland" is located in trendy SOMA (South of Market) off Brannan Street (between 6th and 7th) where countless tech companies - including Airbnb and Pinterest - are located. Every person who has stayed here has been within walking distance of their office. And if you are driving south to Palo Alto or Mountain View for example, the freeway entrance is less than 2 minutes away. (This is the closest location you can be in SF for getting on 101 or 280 south as opposed all of the other neighborhoods around the city where you have to slog through traffic to get onto a freeway. SF has the 4th worst traffic in the world so not having to fight it is a major plus.)

Alexandra was a great host and this is definitely the most unique Airbnb I've ever stayed at. I felt like I discovered some new and interesting quirk of the decor every time I looked around! The place was clean and as described in the listing. If you're looking for something a bit outside the ordinary look no further.

Alexandra was an absolutely amazing host! The place was spotless and incredibly well decorated. For anyone commuting to the financial district or Silicon Valley this place is super convenient as it's only a few blocks from the highway.

This apartment is unique, like staying on a TV set, very creative and thoughtfully put together. Very colorful and yet practical. Everything worked fluently. Only point I wd make is the area is still up and coming so worth taking a cab back at night for solo travelers. Alexandra was a terrific host who met us and collected the key when we left but otherwise left us alone- but a phone call away if we needed her. Which we didn't. Fridge was stocked and so was coffee machine. Highly recommended and fun.

Response from Alexandra:
Thank you so much, Joanna. I have never heard my place described as "staying on a TV set" - I love that! And good point on the cab for solo travelers. Smart advice for pretty much anywhere in SOMA.

In one word: AWESOME. Apartment) Great natural light, comfortable bed, lot of space for your things, everything was immaculate clean. The furniture it's unbelievable: every single inch of the house has some detail you will astonish by. From the mural art, to every single object. I really think you can't get any better. Location) It's a loft in a small alley in SoMa. The bad thing is that it's not really "in" the best spot, but it still is few minutes walking distance from popular places and close to public transport. It's great if you've a car and commuting: it features a private parking space all for you and it takes literrally 2 minutes or less to be on the 101. Host) Alexandra is soooo nice: she did everything she could to make me enjoy the place at its best. Great communications and quick answers any time I needed. If it's availabe... get this place without thinking twice.

Our stay at the161 Gilbert St. loft during this past Christmas holidays was a wonderful experience with an exceptional treatment by our host Alexandra. She really made us feel at home with lots of attention all through our stay. Alexandra welcomed us with coffee, bread, milk, a bottle of wine and many other treats... Wow! In addition, she was always available to any answer questions and happy to make recommendations on things to do in SF. The loft itself is a piece of art, every corner beautifully decorated and cared for by its owner. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was always super-hot which added warmth and relaxation. Proximity to all major grocery stores, restaurants and luxury shopping malls was a plus. For our rental car, we had a parking space assigned to us in the building’s garage which made everything easier and convenient. Our overall experience was absolutely amazing and a perfect location for exploring the city. Whether you are sight-seeing or just visiting SF you cannot go wrong with 161 Gilbert St. loft. Thank you for a wonderful exquisite experience!! All the best !! Maruchy & Efraim
